Hello to 'Broadcasting House'
listeners...
06/17/2005 03:22 PMA brief welcome to everyone who listened to Broadcasting House this morning and find themselves on
plasticbag.org for the first time. If you're looking for posts about
weblogs then I can recommend the Persona
l Publishing archive. If you're unfamiliar with weblogs, then
probably the best way to describe them is as a launchpad to express
your opinions, engage in conversations and note stuff down in public.
I've been writing this particular weblog since November 1999,
when it was very informal and only for a few friends. Today all kinds
of people seem to get value from it. At the moment those people seem
(weirdly) to be Doctor Who fans who have seized a little post I wrote a couple of weeks
ago and have decided to use it as a launchpad for slightly
over-the-top theorising. I think that post got sixty comments
yesterday alone. To be honest, I couldn't be more delighted.
I'm probably more known for my thoughts on
social software, future media consumption and net
culture in general. I'm also in the process of trying to
find my father and I write about that whenever I get any news. If
you want to know more about me then I can recommend reading About Tom Coates. If
you're interested in finding out more about corporate weblogging in
general then I can recommend posts by Scobleizer
, Anil
Dash and an article called The Unbearable
Rightness of Nick Denton. Nice to have you with us!

I seem to be getting way fewer TrackBacks that normal. I suspect it's

Debian: Where should
wewe should go from
here?
06/17/2005 06:46 PMDebian sarge has finally been released -- now what? If you ask me (and
you didn't, but I'm going to tell you anyway), Debian should have two
overarching priorities for the next release: 1. putting a timed
release cycle in place, so what happened with sarge never happens
again; and 2. keeping the growing family of Debian derivatives united
around a common core -- namely, Debian itself. What's at stake? If we
don't do something about both of these problems, actual and potential,
Debian will be irrelevant by the time etch is out.
Iraqi first strike before the American
first strike?
Iraqi first strike before the American
first strike?
03/15/2003 04:09 AMABC news is reporting that the US is worried that Iraq may strike
first before we can strike first. I don't wish any harm on the
American troops overseas (or on the poor Iraqi soldiers either, for
that matter), but the logic of the outrage about this escapes me. We
are proclaiming our right to strike preemptively and unilaterally,
where we see a threat that might appear in the future, and we are
actively preparing to strike at Iraq. What logic allows us to be
outraged if Iraq reacts to this threat by striking at the troops
ringing her borders? Incidents like these are why the Europeans have
concluded that Americans have gone off their rockers....

in the field, but WiTopia.net's new personalVPN offering challenges
their price and technology. In this article at Mobile Pipeline, I talk
about both companies services. HotSpotVPN's recently introduced SSL
VPN service competes head-to-head with personalVPN but has higher
grades of encryption available at higher costs. Read the whole article

How safe is your pension? (UK) 'Nine million people
in this country, young and old, pay a slice of their wage into final
salary occupational pension schemes. But Channel 4's economics
correspondent Liam Halligan reveals that most people don't realise
they have no legal right to that pension money whatsoever. And some
people have lost the lot.'
Think Britain's social safety net is
more secure than that of the US? Think again.
