Groxis Inc. announced on Wednesday that Grokker 2.1, the company's visual search tool, is now compatible with Mac OS X. The software was previously available as a Beta release for the operating system. Grokker uses its four plug-ins -- The Web (covering the AltaVista, MSN, WiseNut, Yahoo! and Teoma search engines), Amazon.com, Google and My Files -- to produce visual maps of the data you're looking for, whether it's on the Internet or on your hard drive. It features a fully functional Web browser and allows you to build, edit and save visual maps containing up to 2,000 items in each. Version 2.1 builds maps faster, adds the Google plug-in, highlights query keywords in different colors and more. It requires Mac OS X v10.2.2, a G3 processor, 256MB RAM, 20MB free hard drive space, Java 1.4.1 and Safari 1.0. A 30-day trial is available from the Groxis Web site, and a license is US$49.

Had any good "info-revelations" lately? A re-tooled software application called Grokker may be just the ticket for an infusion of serendipitous little wonders. Grokker (available at Groxis.com) takes the raw output of a query and organizes it (via visual representation) into categories and subcategories. When you type in, say, "nanotechnology," Grokker sifts through data from multiple search engines and you initially see a big circle, within which are smaller subset circles with such labels as "molecular," "conference," "technology," "science" and "research." It even includes a category circle on "children's books." Click on "molecular," and that circle enlarges so you can see several further subcircles, one of which is "molecular assemblies." Click on that, and another category -- "molecular assembly sequencing software" -- shows up. Groxis CEO R.J. Pittman says Grokker promises to crack open some mysteries of the Web: "Google has indexed several billion pages, but there are between 550 and 600 billion in total on what's referred to as the invisible Web or deep Web. Within a year Grokker will have ten times the reach of Google in terms of available Web pages." The Los Angeles and Chicago school districts have taken trial licenses for their students.

The new version of the company's download assistance utility features optimization for Mac OS X v10.3.5, better integration with Safari, full support for all .dmg files, fixes for problems with .dms files, a move to Apple's Xcode for improved reliability and more. Absoft Corp. has released Pro Fortran Compiler Suite 9.0, an upgrade to the company's Fortran tool kit that's optimized for use with the Power Mac G5 and features Fortran 95 and C/C++ compilers, Fx2 Debugger, free graphics libraries and an Integrated Development Environment (IDE) that offers graphic interfaces for Pro Fortran, IBM XL Fortran, IBM XL C/C++ and gcc compilers. In addition, it comes with such third party tools and libraries as VAST, IMSL and LAPACK90. Upgrades from Pro Fortran Compiler Suite 8.0 or earlier are US$399 while upgrades from version 8.2 or higher are $299, and full licenses are $899, with academic licenses available for $675. Absoft also offers floating and volume purchase licenses. System requirements call for Mac OS X v10.2, a G3 processor (G4 or G5 recommended), 128MB RAM and 60MB hard drive space.
