Ricochet Update
Ricochet Update
08/19/2004 02:11 PMRicochet folks are on their toes and were quick to offer me an update
on the service, based on my post yesterday lamenting the lack of a
Ricochet-like service: YDI Wireless recently purchased the old
Ricochet Networks and two cities, San Diego and Denver, currently
offer service. The company is also negotiating with the original 21
Ricochet cities in hopes of possibly reactivating them. I selfishly
hope that Seattle is high on their list. According to a recent Denver
Business Journal article (which unfortunately doesn't seem to be
available online), YDI will be the fourth Ricochet owner in the last
three years. At some point during the bankruptcy process, the original
antennas reverted back to the cities, which allowed Ricochet to hang
its gear on light poles. It will remain to be seen if the new owners
can make a business where the original Ricochet couldn't. The
equipment to build the network and the client devices have to be low
cost and enough people have to sign up to make the business work. YDI
also recently bought Terabeam, the company that was lead by AT&T
Wireless alum Dan Hesse. Terabeam makes wireless communications gear
using free space optics....
Ricochet Rises From The Dead... Again
Ricochet Rises From The Dead... Again
12/05/2003 06:41 PMIt really is amazing how many times Ricochet has been rescued at the
very last minute. When it was still Metricom, they threatened to shut
down a few times and were rescued with a last minute cash infusion -
until eventually they really did shut down... only to be bought out a
few months later by Aerie Networks. Aerie, though, laid off everyone
last month and
shut
off parts of the network. We thought they were gone for real this
time, but apparently not. Aerie has
sold the
system off again to EDL Holding, where it will become a sister
company to Advantage Wireless. The new CEO claims that they're going
to expand the Ricochet offering and drop its prices even lower.
That's the only way they're going to make a compelling offering at
this point, as they're being beaten in just about every aspect of
their business. Still, as an early Ricochet customer, I'm always
interested in what happens to them. I just don't see how they compete
against all the other broadband wireless options out there these days.
They had the market and they lost it. It's unclear what advantage
they'll have in bringing it back.
Ricochet Bounces into Other Hands, Again
Ricochet Bounces into Other Hands, Again
06/30/2004 02:52 PMRicochet Networks is now part of YDI Wireless: This article traces the
history of the network as it passes into its fourth set of hands.
Nonetheless, YDI is well positioned through its existing business to
make use of Ricochet as an adjunct to higher-speed and fixed
offerings....
The Death Of Ricochet, Part II
The Death Of Ricochet, Part II
11/12/2003 06:50 PMI was an early customer of Metricom's Ricochet wireless modem service
in the late 90s. I used their first (slow) network (about 28k) and
later their higher speed (128k) service. I was a
huge fan, as
it was really wonderful - but I've always thought their
strategy
was screwed up. When I was using it, they were my high speed ISP.
They were, to me, an alternative to signing up for DSL or a cable
modem service at home - with the added benefit that I could take the
connection anywhere they had service (which covered all of the Bay
Area, and many of the places I traveled). However, they thought they
were targeting the "mobile worker" who had a corporate budget to back
them up. So, they were charging more than double what DSL costs, and
basically priced themselves out of the market, eventually
going
bankrupt. While bankruptcy negotiations dragged on, all of
Metricom's network was shut down, and the pieces (which Metricom spent
a billion dollar building) ended up being
sold at
auction for around $8 million to a company name Aerie Networks.
Aerie eventually rebuilt the system in a couple of test locations, and
partly went with the strategy I suggested - offering the service at a
lower price point. Of course, in the year between the network getting
shut down and Aerie getting it back up again, WiFi took off, and
hotspots along with wireless home and work networks started appearing
everywhere. Also, others took WiFi and started figuring out how to
make wider area solutions with it as well. Suddenly, Ricochet no
longer made sense no matter what the price point. It was a
proprietary solution that was entirely reliant on one company, when
there were plenty of other "good enough" (or in some cases "better")
solutions already showing up. All that said, is it really any
surprise that
the new
Ricochet service appears to be on the verge of shutting down?
Apparently just about everyone's been fired, and the few remaining
people are trying to figure out if they can sell off anything before
turning out the lights. It seems clear that Ricochet was a good thing
that completely missed its window of opportunity.
