The "feed" URI scheme

The "feed" URI scheme 01/16/2004 01:04 PM

Dare Obasanjo recently posted the final draft of the "feed" URI scheme, along with a request for comments on the draft. The feed URI scheme is designed to simplify identifying and subscribing to syndicated feeds, and I'm planning to fully support it in the next build of FeedDemon. My thanks to Dare for taking the time to create this document.

+1 for Feed URI Scheme

+1 for Feed URI Scheme 01/22/2004 02:12 AM

On the issue of whether to introduce a new URI scheme to allow one-click feed subscription, in spite of W3C Technical Architecture Group's position against new URI schemes, I am adding my vote to Dare Obasanjo's proposal which is already in fairly wide use.  While I understand W3C TAG's position, a less than ideal solution is better than expecting the world to accept the right solution.

If you are unfamiliar with this issue, Jon Udell has a post with links and words.

Update:

I should note that neither schemes address the need to support multiple aggregators at the same time.  I thought about writing a general feed subscription management plugin for IE but haven't found the time yet.

In-game Ponzi scheme

In-game Ponzi scheme 08/22/2004 07:29 AM
Cory Doctorow: This is a stunning, lengthy personal account of a gamer from Eve Online, a space-trading game, who decided that the game-masters had tipped the scales in favour of pirates and sought revenge by raising a half-billion credits in a Ponzi scheme that destroyed the morale and fun of every non-pirate victim. The fake syndicate the player raised involved massive impersonation and all the typical techniques of a Big Con. Unfortunately, the author's got a propensity for gratuitously racist similes that really detracted from the story, but this is still a gripping read.
Trazir would fly around the Minmatar newbie sectors, offering 10,000 credits to anybody who would join our corporation. All they had to do was click on "accept" when Trazir made the offer, and they became a part of our corporate family. Since many of the people he encountered were only days, hours, or even minutes new to Eve, a great deal clicked "accept" and were subsequently given 10,000 credits. I did the same in the Caldari newbie regions, and within a couple days, ZZZZ Best was burgeoning at the seams with 18 clueless members. We had to act quickly and peddle our deal, as well as maintain member numbers, because there would no doubt be a good deal of turnover as people realized that they belonged to a corporation which did nothing for them and which they did nothing for.

An inside look at Microsoft's new
security scheme
12/03/2003 09:48 AM
STANFORD, Calif. -- Microsoft apparently got the hint: Palladium, its new scheme to fortify the next Windows operating system, win the ever-escalating virus wars, and knuckle down on users trying to share files, wasn't exactly causing the great PR buzz it anticipated. Objective folks who had seen the early plans zeroed in on the fact that under this idea, users were going to lose control of their computers due to monumental back-door access controlled by Microsoft. The company called it "trusted computing," and detractors immediately modified that to read "treacherous computing."

MSN Spaces Supports Feed URI Scheme

MSN Spaces Supports Feed URI Scheme 04/08/2005 03:26 PM

Dare Obasanjo reports that MSN Spaces now supports "one-click subscription" via the feed URI scheme (aka: "feed :// protocol"). According to Mike Torres:

"Clicking on the orange RSS button or the "Syndicate" link above will no longer spit out raw XML to your readers using a modern browser. Instead, they will see a "pretty printed" RSS feed with a link to learn more, subscribe in My MSN, or subscribe in an aggregator supporting one-click subscription (feed://)."

In other words, readers of any of the 4.5 million MSN Spaces blogs can now simply click a feed link to subscribe to the feed in FeedDemon, NetNewsWire, NewsGator, Shrook, RSS Bandit, NewzCrawler, Sharpreader or any other RSS reader which support the feed URI scheme. Very nice!

Pair Nailed In AOL Spam Scheme

Pair Nailed In AOL Spam Scheme 06/27/2004 03:19 AM
“JUNE 23—An AOL software engineer was arrested today for stealing the company’s entire subscriber list—totaling 92 million screen names—and selling it to a 21-year-old Las Vegas spammer. According to the below federal criminal complaint, Jason Smathers, 24, last year illegally accessed the highly confidential AOL list by using another employee’s identification codes. Smathers, who worked in AOL’s Dulles, Virginia office, then allegedly sold the list to Sean Dunaway, who used the AOL database to promote his own online gambling business and who also sold the list for $52,000 to fellow spammers, one of whom used the names ‘for purposes of marketing herbal penile enlargement pills,’ according to the complaint.’
