Enterprise Level Spyware

Enterprise Level Spyware

Enterprise Level Spyware 06/30/2004 06:01 PM

This won't surprise most people, but the rise of spyware and adware is not just an issue for home users, but it's now showin g up in office PCs as well. Some people have even pointed out that it may be a bigger problem in the office, since users aren't as careful about what they do, knowing that they have a tech support staff who can "clean things up" for them. Still, the article suggests the next generation of spyware may be more enterprise focused -- in that it may actually be designed to steal confidential information and give it to competitors. Right now, of course, there's no evidence that this is actually happening, and it would be fairly difficult for anyone to pull off such a targeted piece of spyware and get it into that company. However, that doesn't mean the next generation of malware won't try to cause additional problems for companies.

Yahoo's Offers New Anti-Spyware Tool...
That Actually Finds Spyware
08/05/2004 03:50 AM
It appears that Yahoo heard the backlash loud and clear a few months back when they released an anti-spyware tool that just so happened to skip over adware from Yahoo partners. The latest version, built on PestPatrol's technology will now default to notifying users of both "spyware" and what they consider to be "adware" and then give the user the choice of what to do. I haven't tested the product yet, but it sounds like they're moving in the right direction. It still makes you wonder what they were thinking in offering a purposely crippled offering. People know what spyware is, and telling them that spyware isn't spyware doesn't change how people feel about it. It also doesn't make them look kindly back at the company that provided them with the bogus anti-spyware tool in the first place.

Just a few weeks after saying that they're going to start bundling spyware/adware with their instant messenger product, AOL announces their latest anti-spyware application. While we've been complaining about anti-spyware from ISPs that just points out the spyware, AOL claims that this version will disable (though not delete) the spyware. I wonder if it will catch the spyware that AOL installs themselves.

Yahoo's Famed Anti-Spyware App Allows
Spyware From Partners
06/02/2004 10:10 AM
We didn't write about Yahoo's new "anti-spyware" toolbar that they announced last week, because it seemed to receive plenty of hype, and there were no real reviews of how it worked. There are so many so-called anti-spyware applications out there that don't actually stop spyware and adware for fear of upsetting marketing companies or out of worries that actually stopping spyware may make some applications stop working (upsetting the user), that we figured Yahoo's anti-spyware app (hype and all) probably wouldn't be much to bother with. It certainly looks like that may be the case. eWeek is now reporting that Yahoo tries to dance the careful dance of not upsetting certain companies who threate n to sue people who call their application spyware. Of course, the situation is even more complex because Claria (who you probably know as Gator - despite their attempt to change their name to shake that spyware label) is also a partner of Yahoo. So, it's really not surprising that the default setting for Yahoo's anti-spyware app won't actually remove services like Gator or WhenU. Instead, Yahoo's spyware remover claims these programs are "adware" and will only remove them if you click and extra check box each time you run the program. In other words, once again, you can't trust a provider of anti-spyware software, because they're playing both sides of the fence: partnering with providers on the one hand, and then offering weak removal products on the other. If Yahoo were serious about removing spyware from the computers of users they would refuse to partner with companies that used surreptitious tactics to be installed on computers. Instead, they want to look good to users in the front, while letting in spyware/adware from partners through the backdoor.

Some notes on the .XXX Top Level Domain

Some notes on the .XXX Top Level Domain 06/05/2005 11:34 PM

Yes terday the ICANN board discussed and approved ICANN staff to enter into negotiations with ICM Registry, Inc. for the .XXX Top Level Domain (TLD). I'm sure there will be a longer more complete presentation from ICANN later about this, but as an individual board member I thought I'd post a quick note before people got carried away with speculation based on a lack of information.

I realize that the formal documents on the ICANN page are difficult to read, but I suggest people take a look at the actual application before jumping to conclusions about what the .XXX TLD is. It is actually a well thought out structure that provides a balanced approach to an issue with many stake holders.

The .XXX TLD is a sponsored TLD or sTLD with a sponsoring organization. Policy will be managed by a non-profit organization called the International Foundation for Online Responsibility (IFFOR). (Here is the org chart.) IFFOR will have a board of directors comprised of members from several supporting organizations. These organizations include 1) privacy, security & child advocacy, 2) free expression, 3) online adult-entertainment and board members selected through a nomination committee system similar to ICANN. No one constituency can capture the board and all have a say. There will be an Ombudsman. The organization has demonstrated strong support from all of the constituencies and also the credit card industry. A portion of all of the revenue from domain names will go to a fund that a Grant Advisory Committee will use to support child advocacy. Credit card companies are working with the legitimate adult sites to create incentives for them to switch to .XXX.

ICANN has been mandated with trying to increase the TLD space and the .XXX proposal, in my opinion, has met the criteria set out in the RFP. Our approval of .XXX is a decision based on whether .XXX met the criteria and does not endorse or condone any particular type of content or moral belief. This is not the role of ICANN. I realize that some will view this as ICANN endorsing pornography on the Internet, but this is not the case.

There are people who are concerned about censorship and control. These are issues that have been raised, but I think the .XXX proposal is more about creating incentives for legitimate adult entertainment sites to come together and fight "bad actors" and is not focused on forcing people to use the .XXX domain.

Some people have argued that there has not been enough public debate, but we have been taking public comments for quite a while. We DO read them and have encouraged people to discuss their issues with us through the process. I believe we followed a rigorous process. We started with an RFP and over the last 15 months, we have had independent evaluators, numerous meetings, public discussion and public comments.

I think Bret Fausett summarized the situation well on his blog.

The decision on .XXX may be one of the most difficult ICANN has ever made, and you can expect ICANN to be criticized whatever it decides. I imagine that many of the countries participating in the GAC aren't ready to be part of a decision that will endorse a space for pr0n on the Internet. The fact that .XXX could be a political hook on which the governments of the world could hang Internet zoning laws could make the decision more palatable, but it's still a political minefield for ICANN. Again, I hope the proposal is accepted, but it's going to take a great deal of courage to do that.
I think any decision would have had strong critics. I believe we have made the best decision possible considering all of the issues involved. Having said that staff are now negotiating the contract. If anyone has any thoughts that we should consider in negotiating the contract I would be happy to hear them. Staff are working hard to produce a contract that ensures that the TLD functions as advertised.

rss + sfx in mt

"Was inspired by something Tangognat said in my comments< /A> about linking RSS search results to link resolvers being an important piece of any ideal citation management software, so over lunch today I whipped up this proof of concept:

Using MovableType and the MTRSSFeed plugin, I'm pretty much just grabbing and listing the RSS feed of search results already kindly generated by HubMed (of PubMed). For each item, I also grab the guid (where the HubMed feed puts the pmid) and then use that to generate the necessary openurl....

Anyway, this is strictly proof of concept and not necessarily of real use or functionality. It still needs all those other pieces that I want in a citation manager. But it does give me hope. If this kind of baby step is possible using just MT plugins over someone's lunch break, imagine what a real programmer can do. :)

Later -- The SFX links now point to the Ex Libris demo link resolver instead of the link resolver belonging to my library. Which actually now makes these SFX links the exact same as the ones you can already find on the HubMed site. Oh well. But you get the idea. Just pretend that you're also getting a slew of full-text options linking you directly to the article in question." [rawbrick weblog]

Now that's what I'm talking about! A beautiful proof of concept relevant to What I Wanted to Say at BloggerCon. Be sure to view the demo, pick an entry, and click on "SFX Link" to see a better visualization of what I was trying to say.

Thanks, Carol!
