As some of you know, I am a judge in Weblogs, Inc's 'P
erfect'
Corporate Weblogging 'Elevator Pitch' Contest which is now
in the scoring
phase. I just spent an hour on the submissions and, frankly,
it was difficult
to judge because:
-
I know too much about blogging to emulate clueless
executives.
-
There are too many unknowns about the audience.
Making a 'pitch' without knowing much about your audience is like
pitching without
knowing where the strikezone is. Know who they are and what
they are interested
in so you can select the appropriate bait and dangle it where they
are likely to bite.
Anyhow, I think such a contest should be held once a week with a
specific target description.
For example, VP of Marketing at Nike, VP of Sales at Victoria
Secret, or VP of
Engineering at Sony. Forget the judges too. Instead let
the readers cast
their votes to select the Pitch of the Week. Fast forward and
I wouldn't be
surprised if executives send in pitch requests to hear how blogging
can help their
particular company. Heck, asking for help is a form of
marketing after all as
enterprising Nigerians have showed.

JUDITH
MESKILL'S WEBLOG PERFECT PITCH
COMPETITION
05/02/2004 03:29 PM
Judith
Meskill, who simultaneously runs two
weblogs (Knowledge
Notes and The
Social Software Weblog),
recently ran a contest to write the Perfect Pitch for weblogs in
business. The idea was to write a very short speech (short enough to
deliver in a short elevator ride) that would persuade a senior
executive of a company to introduce blogs in their company. I was
honoured to have been asked to be one of the judges. The winners were
Lee LeFever, Randal
Moss, Jack Vinson and Michael Angeles. Lee's
prize winning pitch was:
First,
think about the value of the Wall Street Journal to business leaders.
The value it provides is context the Journal allows readers to
see
themselves in the context of the financial world each day, which
enables more informed decision making.
With this in mind, think about
your company as a microcosm of the financial world. Can your
employees
see themselves in the context of the whole company? Would more
informed
decisions be made if employees and leaders had access to internal news
sources?
Weblogs serve this need.
By
making internal websites simple to update, weblogs allow individuals
and teams to maintain online journals that chronicle projects inside
the company. These professional journals make it easy to produce and
access internal news, providing context to the company context
that
can profoundly affect decision making. In this way, weblogs
allow
employees and leaders to make more informed decisions through
increasing their awareness of internal news and events.
Now the winners get to turn the tables on us judges. This time we (Dina
Mehta, Don
Park, Flemming Funch,
Jim McGee,
Lilia
Efimova, Martin Dugage, Phil Wolff,
Ross Mayfield,
Scott
Allen,
Ton Zijlstra and
yours truly) have to write a Perfect Pitch for blogs in business, and the winners get to judge our
entries. Keep your fingers crossed for me. I can't tell you my entry
because Judith is going to keep the identity of each submission
hidden,
so that no one is swayed by our awesome reputations in casting their
vote ;-)

The Pitch
The Pitch
09/19/2004 08:03 AMI got a msg from the Bush campaign (I'm a member of GOP TeamLeader)
touting an HBO movie, 9 Innings from Ground Zero. The msg links to a
clip about Bush throwing out the first pitch. In it, W lets us know
the pressure on him not to "bounce" it. I can see why the Republicans
are circulating it. It's a good piece of tape, in a
patriotic-cum-Riefenstahl sense. And, on the other hand, it's maybe
the most absurd reduction of a serious issue I have ever seen. You
want to see American political cynicism at its worst? This is...

Jim Grizanzio, OpenSolaris Community Manager: "I
spent nine painful years pitching messages in PR. But I'm out now, and
I have a different perspective. Why must everything be a pitch to
deliver a message no one believes? And why pitch bloggers? Why
perpetuate the bad PR that the PR industry so richly deserves? Why not
simply read blogs to understand the issues and the communities trying
to interact with a company. And why not simply blog right along with
those communities and join the conversation? In other words, skip the
pitch."
Jim is commenting on Fortune Magazine's recent article
Why There's No Escaping The Blog.

Offshoring where do we go next and my
run in with a pitch man
07/07/2004 07:21 PMI felt really sorry for the guy that called the office last week. I
get the holler from across the hallway hey some guy wants to talk to
you about offshoring wanna take it? Hmmmmmmm those of you that have
been reading here for awhile know my stance on offshoring. (When Hell
freezes over) So I take the guys call. The least he could have done is
called me via a real land-line instead I get the common static buzz of
a net based call. We talk for about 30 minutes while I pick the guys
brain nothing really brain shattering came out of the discussion.
He ask to send me some info and I say sure, I would be happy to
look at their promotion material. A week later what finally shows up
in my inbox, his pitch material curious read to say the least. Call me
traditional, "Made in the USA" and "Support Stays in the USA". If any
of you would like a copy of what they sent me drop me a line, I'll
forward it to you. Companies are now weighing the backlash of their
customers before offshoring some say it makes up at least 50% of the
decision level process. [ZDNet]

12/16/2003 12:30 PM

At SunNetwork 2003 back in September, Jonathan Schwartz made the case
that the Java card is the most strategic piece of Sun's whole
technology stack. Actually, I'd say per-employee pricing is the real
strategic innovation. But I've always hoped to see movement on the
identity card front, so
this
clip, in which Schwartz stresses something I've been harping on
for years, got my attention:
Java card support will be built into the desktop that we offer. It is
the fundamental way we will help people to understand that if there
were a menu item in your mail app that said, 'Show only mail from
people that have been strongly authenticated,' then spam would
disappear. 'Show me only content that has been strongly
authenticated,' viruses would disappear.

Are You Paying Attention To This Sales
Pitch?
09/17/2004 08:13 PMA good presenter knows how to adjust their presentation when the
audience's body language shows they're not so interested in what's
being pitched. However, with more and more people doing presentations
over the internet, it's tougher to read that "body language." Webex
thinks they have a solution. They're adding a feature to
alert a
presenter if a viewer isn't paying attention. So, if the person
viewing the presentation has switched to another app (email?
solitaire?) the presenter will know they better spice up the
presentation quickly. This could be a pretty useful feature, though
some might not think so if they're caught snoozing. A smart sales
presenter, of course, wouldn't reveal that he or she knows the
prospect's attention had shifted, but not everyone is that smart.
Update: A reporter at InfoWorld notes one of the problems with
this approach. As Webex demonstrated the system for her, she
swit
ched to a word processor to take notes -- immediately alerting
Webex that she wasn't paying attention.
