Wireless vs. Rush Hour
Wireless vs. Rush Hour
05/20/2004 02:19 PMMy latest article for TheFeature.com is online:
"Each year, Los Angeles drivers spend a combined total of 9,000
years stuck in traffic. Cell phones make it much easier to suffer
through the brutal traffic jams that are the bane of city life around
the world. Fortunately, wireless technology can also shorten the
waiting game of freeway commuting.
From Los Angeles and Seattle to Berlin and Tokyo, city planners and
researchers are deploying a slew of wireless sensors, smart street
signs, and real-time data services for mobile devices to help manage
traffic flow and inform drivers about what they'll face on the road
ahead."

Debian: Where should
wewe should go from
here?
06/17/2005 06:46 PMDebian sarge has finally been released -- now what? If you ask me (and
you didn't, but I'm going to tell you anyway), Debian should have two
overarching priorities for the next release: 1. putting a timed
release cycle in place, so what happened with sarge never happens
again; and 2. keeping the growing family of Debian derivatives united
around a common core -- namely, Debian itself. What's at stake? If we
don't do something about both of these problems, actual and potential,
Debian will be irrelevant by the time etch is out.
Iraqi first strike before the American

Iraqi first strike before the American
first strike?
03/15/2003 04:09 AMABC news is reporting that the US is worried that Iraq may strike
first before we can strike first. I don't wish any harm on the
American troops overseas (or on the poor Iraqi soldiers either, for
that matter), but the logic of the outrage about this escapes me. We
are proclaiming our right to strike preemptively and unilaterally,
where we see a threat that might appear in the future, and we are
actively preparing to strike at Iraq. What logic allows us to be
outraged if Iraq reacts to this threat by striking at the troops
ringing her borders? Incidents like these are why the Europeans have
concluded that Americans have gone off their rockers....

I'm sort of in love with this Tube Lamp by
Nik Willmore, which is a really dangerous thing since he lives and
works right here in New York. At $225, though, it's almost
cheap enough to just get and justify as a heirloom or something.
Here's your inheritance, kids, and it glows!
Oh, and if you are worried about getting one just because the bulbs
might burn out, apparently the 25-watt tubular bulbs can be gotten
almost anywhere, even Home Depot. And of course, you can't forget the
finishing touch - the control knob is a chromed replacement for a
Fender Telecaster.

Tube escalators to get video ads
Tube escalators to get video ads
04/04/2005 08:05 AMCory Doctorow:
The London Underground railway (AKA "the tube") has the world's most
amazing escalators -- escalator after escalator, ear-poppingly-long
marvels of diagonal transport. It's common to see advertisers buying
up an entire escalator's worth of ad-space, producing a kind of public
transit Burma Shave moment, with each installment heaving into view as
the escalator carries you upward.
Now Viacom is piloting video ads -- with audio -- on flat panel
displays on the tube escalators. Given how many stickers, blobs of
strategically placed chewing gum, and markered-over bon mots you see
on the paper ads, this seems an extraordinarily expensive proposition.
Yet it does open up the possibility of some pretty cool little films
that are optimized to be played in a series of diagonally placed
screens to a moving audience. It remains to be seen whether any of the
advertisers will rise to it, or whether we'll just get shorter TV
commercials.
In a few weeks, Viacom Outdoor plans to start installing 66 screens
in the London Underground that are essentially video posters with
changing text and animated images. The animated signs are made of
liquid crystals that realign under electrical stimulation.
