My Yahoo Beta Tests RSS Feeds

My Yahoo Beta Tests RSS Feeds 01/26/2004 10:59 PM

Everyone is buzzing about the fact that Yahoo is beta testing the addition of any RSS feed to it's My Yahoo portal, a move that may signal an inroad to the mainstream. I didn't want to comment on this until I had a chance to play with it; today I had that chance. Here are some of my observations.

In this section, we'll look at the two major alternatives for parsing feeds, MagpieRSS and the Ultraliberal Feed Parser. Both parsers are libraries, both convert feeds into native data structures and neither cares whether a feed is RSS 1.0, RSS 2.0 or Atom. By O'Reilly. 0603

Presents For Bad Kids Head To eBay,
Rather Than Kids

Presents For Bad Kids Head To eBay,
Rather Than Kids
12/27/2004 04:42 AM
Well, normally, people wait until after they've received presents to dump them on eBay. However, one father who felt his three sons were being particularly bad lately decided that to punish them he's putting their presents up for sale on eBay. To be honest, this sounds like a bit of a publicity stunt -- and it seems likely that, now that this is getting attention, that casino that seems to be buying e very random quirky auction item will snap this one up. Update: Whoops. It's apparently already happened. Indeed, the casino in question has d ecided to buy the undelivered presents. This is sort of an update on our story last year about how sellers were increasingly looking to use eBay as a publicity generating tool. It appears that's now being used by buyers to generate publicity, as well.

Fact They're Barely For Kids

MP3 Players Aren't Just For Kids; In
Fact They're Barely For Kids
12/19/2004 03:47 PM
The common bit of wisdom is that MP3s are a young person's technology. It's the teens and the folks just coming out of college that are the MP3 generation, after all, so they'd be the most likely to own an MP3 player, right? Not at all, apparently. A new study says that 90% of MP3 player owners over 34 years old. While this may have something to do with the high price of many of the best MP3 players, the numbers still don't seem right. It would be interesting to see the methodology behind this study. That's not to say that those over 34 aren't likely to own an MP3 player, but it's hard to believe that 90% of MP3 players go to those 35 and older.

Yahoo 360 is putting Copyright 2005
Yahoo on Personal Blog Entries
03/30/2005 01:16 AM

It was brought to my attention today that Yahoo is copyrighting the RSS feeds for those that are setting up Yahoo 360 accounts. Some are already refusing to use the service because in a sense Yahoo now owns your content.

This may be a oversight on Yahoo's part and I hope it is, I will probaly use their service anyway but probably not the blog portion and give them some time to answer these issues. [Yahoo 360 Copyrights Personal RSS Feeds]

Most people can't handle more than a couple hundred feeds. Andrew Grumet has computed the distri bution of subscription numbers among Share your OPML participants. Here's the cumulative graph, which highlights how much of an outlier Robert Scoble is with his (at last count) 1296 subscriptions:

Ads in Feeds

Ads in Feeds 01/26/2004 12:42 PM

RSSAds.com, supposedly operated by Chad Williams of SF, recently opened its doors (sources: Ti m Marman, Mike Gunderloy) and is looking for publishers of premium syndicatable content. Will RSSAds.com make money?  Maybe.  That's maybe as in “I hope they succeed but don't expect me to make a bet...yet.”  Can advertising in feeds make money?  Yes, but it will be difficult to pull off.

Here are some problems to consider:

It's too easy to filter ads out at the receiving end, meaning news aggregators.

Since retrieval and processing of the feed is fully under news aggregators' control, identifying ads is much easier than trying to intercept ads-laden content flowing to a browser.  Ads can be identified by URL, words, dimensions, etc.

News aggregator developers have no incentives to not filter ads.

Fierce competition among news aggregators developers means ad filtering features will be widely implemented within a few weeks.  They are also mostly individuals with wide range of interests, so it'll be like trying to appease a barbarian horde with glass beads even if you had some incentives to offer.

To solve these problems, premium content publishers need to require use of news aggregators capable of protecting ads from being filtered.  While at it, billing and tracking capability is needed as well to support payed content.  Yes, I am sorry to say, blogosphere will have to embrace DRM before it can support revenue models worthy of pursuing.

I am out of time for now, so I'll have to continue in another post.

I looked at my blog, and I haven't posted for 5 days. All I can tell you folks is that means that we're getting a TON of work done! We're shooting for a SuperNova dmeo right now.

Here's a quicky screen shot of one of the tools we're building:

Folllowing up on this post about Yahoo webmail users receiving upgraded storage capacity in an apparent attempt by Yahoo to compete with Gmail, Boing Boing reader Brian says, "As a member of SBC Yahoo dial-up service, I received a notice yesterday that my email account now has a 2 Gig storage capacity. Obviously, this is separate from the free web-based email service from Yahoo, but 2 Gigs is bar far the most storage available to date, worldwide."
