Trusted Reviews has taken the MSI Mega 516BT
Bluetooth flash player out for a spin, yet despite a load of
improvements over the previous models, like the addition of an SD/MMC
expansion slot and the hard-to-miss Bluetooth, they still find it to
be overall a dud. It's not that the potential isn't there. When it
works, features like the ability to record calls into the player while
using it as a Bluetooth headset are pretty great, but an uneven user
interface and spotty success with some of the phones they tested it
with make it look as if this player might be one to pass over unless
you're in dire need of the handful of unique features it offers.
Wireless in music players isn't a bad idea. Why, according to The
Register, even Apple thinks so.

Sharp LL-171A-B LCD Monitor Reviewed

Trusted Reviews takes a look at the Sharp
LL-171A-B, a 17-inch LCD flat panel monitor that forgoes some of the
extras (like a DVI input) but still keeps a few pleasant oddities like
built-in speakers (which I've never been a huge fan of, but they do at
least give Sharp an excuse to add a headphone jack) and an integrated
power supply. The native 1,280 by 1,024 pixel screen pulls a few
tricks to keep the cost down - it uses just a 6-bit controller to
handle the colors instead of the regular 8-bit one - but Trusted
Reviews says the limited color range is hardly noticeable. With prices
in the $460 range (pre-order), the Sharp looks like a decent, if not
mind-blowing monitor from a company with a good name. For a little bit
more money, though, there are probably less skimped-upon options.
Speaking of, after my used monitor debacle this week (yeah, I know,
but I've had good luck before), if anyone knows of a place to get
good-quality, low-markup monitors (LCD or CRT) in the NYC area, let me
know.

The ViewSonic Laptop... From The Future
03/24/2005 08:31 PMThis is the type of piece that we normally save for slow Fridays, but
it's a slow Thursday, so here you go. It appears that the folks at
Amazon listed a ViewSonic laptop (they make laptops?) where they put a
few extra zeros in the data, such that it was pumping out some serious
power. The processor ran at 10 GHz and the hard-drive could store a
cool 30,000 GB. This is when some folks with more than a little extra
free time decided to
write some amusing reviews
of this laptop from the future. The more you
read
, the more amusing they get. Amazon has fixed the typos
(amusingly, the Techweb article has a typo of its own, saying that the
real hard drive is only "30
MB" suggesting it's not so hard to
make an error in the other direction as well) but the reviews keep
coming: "Mine just arrived yesterday, and man is it fast. I loaded
Folding At Home (FAH), and it instantly found a cure for cancer and
parkinsons. It was also able to run a brute force discovery of every
prime number; It reached infinity in under 32 seconds!!! It turns out
that there are only 32,994,234,116,781,042 prime numbers!!! Not bad
huh?"

03/17/2005 02:47 AMFeaturing ultra-fast 4 millisecond (ms) average video response time
across the entire color scale, ViewSonic announced its Xtreme LCD
monitor lineup today.
With a response time performance up to 8 times faster, ViewSonic says
the new monitors are ideal for extreme gaming, viewing DVDs, watching
television, and even traditional computer usage—such as rapidly
scrolling content within a Web site or a document.
The 19-inch VX924 and 17-inch VX724 are the first desktop displays to
combine ViewSonic’s proprietary Dynamic Structure™ and Amplified
Impulse™ video response acceleration technologies to support rates of
up to 250 frames per second across the entire color scale.
“These Xtreme displays mark a major milestone in LCD technology,” said
Erik Willey, senior product manager, ViewSonic. “The 4ms response time
across all color scales has allowed us to create the ultimate gaming
monitors with motion video performance rivaling the best CRTs.”
The displays will be available in the second quarter of 2005 through
traditional ViewSonic resellers, distributors and mail order.

It's goofy looking, but the MSI Mega Stick 527 has a
ton of features, including built-in USB 2.0 connector and an FM
recording radio. Available in sizes up to 512 only, though, which puts
it in a low-class slot at this point (as if the afro-sporting carton
didn't already do so). Marketed to kids with no taste, the Mega Stick
527 gets 18 hours of battery life from a single AAA battery and should
be available any time.

This is a
breathtaking valuation. Even if I was allowed to invest in tech stocks
(I'm not), I wouldn't touch this one with the proverbial 10-foot pole.
Let's be clear. Google is already a great company. But this price,
assuming bidders in the IPO auction go along, has gone to nosebleed
altitudes.
