Passion and rage in directing movies -
Shekhar Kapur
Passion and rage in directing movies -
Shekhar Kapur
01/25/2004 08:36 PMI had a few ginger ales with Shekhar Kapur, a well known
Indian film director. We talked about the life, the universe and
everything. We talked about what it takes to direct a good film and
how Shekhar chose which films to direct.
He talked about being asked to direct "Long Walk to Freedom" about
the life of Nelson Mandela. He said he turned it down. He understood
about inequality and prejudice from his experiences in India and being
Indian, but that he didn't think he would ever truly understand the
extreme conditions of apartheid. He would never truly understand the
rage of being treated as a completely different class of human being
by the white man.
Later, in Hollywood, in the office of an important studio exec,
Shekhar explained that he had turned down the offer to direct "Long
Walk to Freedom". The exec told Shekhar that he thought that it was a
good idea since people weren't interested in a story about the
struggles of a black man.
Shekhar was infuriated by the comment, but contained it and kept a
straight face. He excused himself and went to the rest room. From the
rest room, he called his agent and told him to accept the deal.
Shekhar was now able to feel the rage and his passion for the film had
developed.
It is very difficult to get the cultural passions right in a movie.
Usually the culture is the backdrop of a story or the story is about
how American culture triumph over other cultures. Shekhar's insistence
on understanding the cultural passion that would be core to a movie
was impressive and something that more directors would strive for when
making movies about other cultures.

The downloads of the Christ
04/19/2004 01:52 PMMy new favorite blog Sellout Central points to
an interesting story on Christian Piracy. Quoting:
only 10 percent of Christian teens considered music piracy
to be morally wrong, according to The Dallas Morning News
I plunge the depths of the internet from time to time just to see
what the scene is like and I've been surprised by the presence of
things like the Passion of the Christ movie and soundtrack being
traded around, bible programs being swapped, and people openly
requesting pirated copies of christian-themed files. I would think if
anyone considered downloading stuff online to be akin to stealing, it
would be faithful followers, but apparently that's not the case.
update: Andy sends
this story of Passion bootlegs being used to route around the
damage of non-distribution:
But the Israeli distributors who have the sole legal right
to import the movie to the Holy Land have so far declined to do so...
Robbed of the chance to view the film legally, the Holy Land's
Christians - foreign pilgrims and minority Palestinian Christians -
are finding other ways to satisfy their curiosity.
Taking the Christ out of Christmas
Taking the Christ out of Christmas
12/30/2004 11:20 AM
article and
feedback here i can't believe how politically correct Christmas
became this year. Some stores sent out memos telling their employees
not to say Merry Xmas but to say Happy Holidays and because of that
you have some right wing religious nuts boycotting these stores and
complaining on the radio.
I personally think they are both wrong. the real religion for the
stores is the dollar anyway. And if you waste your valuable time
trying calling radio stations and picketing stores then you obviously
have way too much time on your hands. just relax people and stop
being brainwashed.
this link is to a feedback forum where a reader complained about the
usage of xmas as opposed to christmas in a headline. the editors
explain that xmas is actually still a very religious term.

A Passion for Pizza
07/05/2004 11:02 AMI have decided that pizza is the perfect food, loved the world over.
Done correctly, it includes most of the food groups according to
Apache Pizza; cheese, meat, veggies and bread. Someone once said of
pizza, "Pizza is a lot like sex. When it's good, it's really good.
When it's bad, it's still pretty good." Being USian , I'm without
time to create my own dough, squash my own tomatoes, or kill my own
cow to create a truly mad pizza. There are alternatives in the quest
for the pizza of world domination, though.
Passion for the story
Passion for the story
07/06/2004 05:14 AM
In my opinion, a reporter should be thirsty for information,
and passionate about conveying it. It should bother you that you got
the story wrong, and one should put aside pride or ego when the object
of your story tells you you got it wrong. Get out the notepad and get
the real story.
I think this is so basic, perhaps it should be a third tenet of
real reporting, along with 1. Disclose your interests. 2. Never
knowingly say something that's not true.
In the last flamefest, this is what separated the real
reporters, professional or amateur, from the space-occupiers. Did they
care what the actual story was, or were they just bloating the
blogosphere with more uninformed crap. Mostly, unfortunately, it was
the latter.

Decisiveness and Passion
Decisiveness and Passion
11/25/2003 10:31 PMIn Heidegger's Children, Richard Wolin quotes Hans Jonas on why he
should have seen Heidegger's Nazism earlier: it's embedded in
Heidegger's talk of "resoluteness" and "decisiveness." Says Jonas,
whereas Heidegger accused idealist philosophy of being a step removed
from the world, one could accuse him of something much more serious:
the absolute formalism of his decisionism, where decision as such
becomes the highest virtue." (132) If this is right (and it's been too
long since I read Being and Time to be sure), it means Heidegger gives
us no way of distinguishing a "resolute decision" to support the worst
of...
