08/17/2004 01:25 PMMy latest TheFeature article is about ways to make tiny batteries last
for years.
At Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y., researchers are
trying to make a nuclear-powered battery with a very long life span.
They've built prototype batteries that use a speck of nickel-63 (a
radioactive isotope) to vibrate a tiny cantilever. The cantilever
could be made from a piece of piezoelectric material, which could
supply power to the sensor. Nickel-63 has a half-life of around 100
years, so it could provide power for several decades. Nukes make
people nervous, but there's not enough radioactive material in the
prototype to cause a mini-meltdown -- it's comparable to the amount
found in a smoke detector. Still, researchers acknowledge that they
have a perception problem to overcome.

“General Electric Co.’s research unit is leading a
group that will develop wireless sensor networks as part of a plan to
boost the energy efficiency of electric motors, the workhorses of
American industry, the unit said Monday.” We’re starting
to see more and more of these practial applications for wireless
sensor networks. Down the line I envision these networks embedded into
homes to provide everything from security to tempature
monitoring….

Somebody please tell David Coursey to stop thinking that social
networks are the answer. They're only the path to
enlightenment. Yes people are important - but people as a
business model is nto going to happen - and is a no-no anyway.
It's what you do WITH the people that matters. Why is that so hard
for folks like DavidCoursey to grok?

Unveiling The Wireless Networking
Starter Kit, 2nd Edition
12/02/2003 12:33 AMThe second edition of my book, The Wireless Networking Starter Kit, is
out!: My co-author Adam Engst and I spent three months on this
revision, which was originally planned to be a small update to the
original 360-page book, but blossomed into 560 pages for the same
price: $30 (or about $21 through Amazon.com). The second edition's Web
site will launch soon, but the book is shipping now, and features a
revised table of contents which offers nearly three dozen chapters and
three appendixes, up from 10 chapters in the first edition. We now
offer a separate chapter for configuring with Windows XP, Centrino,
and Mac OS, and cover using cellular data, Bluetooth, and setting up a
software base station. The first book was focused on Wi-Fi; the second
edition keeps 802.11a, b, and g at its core, but we spread out to all
the wireless topics, such as WiMax, 802.15.3a, ultrawideband,
Bluetooth, and others. We even have a chapter on configuring Wireless
ISP software, such as that from Boingo, Sprint PCS, and iPass. The
goal of this edition was to provide even more nitty-gritty information
about getting from about 20 miles per hour up to 70 on the open
highway. We'll have excerpts and a downloadable table of contents and
index soon. (Note that Amazon.com has the old cover and the wrong page
count; that'll be updated soon.)...
