If Marc Baldo has
his way, we might be using spinach to power our future gadgets. He and
other at MIT have developed a process that isolates photosynthetic
proteins from spinach and puts them between two layers of conducting
material, causing a small electric current to be generated when light
was shone on it -- the same proteins that form the chloroplasts inside
the plant's leaves, which convert light into energy via
photosynthesis. The biological solar cells aren't perfect, as they
give up the ghost after around 21 days. Surprisingly, though, they're
already hitting a 12 percent efficiency of conversion -- that's as
good as many conventional solar cells today.
I predict the biological stability of the spinach cells will
increase when married to a fixed solution of olive oil.

needed to run a laptop would suggest that spinach farming would have

spinach if you wanted to actually use it to power a computer.

problem because it’s got a room to cool it off, usually without too
many other computers in it. Laptops, however, are like back-room
“mainframe” servers in that heat is a big deal. In the one case
you’re worried about your users’ gonads and in the other your HVAC
budget, but the problem is the same. Right now, the heat budget is a
big concern for the guys at Sun who design our biggest servers. It’s
no secret that our
throughput
computing initiative is partly about this: lower clock speeds,
more cores,
thread-level
parallelism. Am I predicting that laptops with SPARC processors
will be leaping off the shelves next quarter? I wouldn’t go that
far. But I am smelling converging design spaces.

In his PC Magazine column
this week, former BB guestblogger John Dvorak provides a bottom ten
list of laptops lost to history:
1. The Gavilan (1983). Actually this was an amazing
attempt at leapfrogging everyone. Unfortunately, the developers
leapfrogged over a cliff. This (despite what Apple mavens believe) was
actually the machine that first employed the mousepad, then called a
touchpad. The company soaked up a then-whopping $30 million in venture
capital and essentially failed right out of the gate. Nobody wanted
the machine, and the rationale for the touchpad was always
questionable. The pad was poorly located, above the keys. Originally
known as the Cosmos Computer, it ran the GOS operating system as well
as MS-DOS. Seen by many as the first true laptop, the machine is
highly collectible. It's a machine that could also easily appear on
the ten-best list.

New HP laptops it would seem, the $800 Compaq nx9020,
a $1200 nx9020, and a nx9040 with a to-be-announced price. The entire
line is aimed at small-business users that need something to perform
basic office duties with long battery life, even when using the
built-in 802.11b/g Wi-Fi. All models can be equipped with the Celeron
M (bleh) or the Pentium M (oh ho!) processor, as well as 14- or
15-inch screens.
So basically, not that exciting, and they'll sell tons.
