If you say that Outlook 2003 is better and faster with client-side operations, you're dead wrong. I detailed the downgrade in today's Windows Fanatics newsletter. Too bad someone hasn't developed a specific benchmarking utility so that I could prove (beyond a shadow of a doubt) how OL2k3's code is crappier. You may think the program is working fine, but after using it for a couple of months, play with OL2k again and you'll see exactly what I mean. Upgrade at your own peril - and start looking for a better Windows PIM. I stand by my original statement(s)....

The basic idea behind open source is very simple: When programmers can read, redistribute, and modify the source code for a piece of software, the software evolves. People improve it, people adapt it, people fix bugs. And this can happen at a speed that, if one is used to the slow pace of conventional software development, seems astonishing.

We in the open source community have learned that this rapid evolutionary process produces better software than the traditional closed model, in which only a very few programmers can see the source and everybody else must blindly use an opaque block of bits.

Open Source Initiative exists to make this case to the commercial world.

Open source software is an idea whose time has finally come. For twenty years it has been building momentum in the technical cultures that built the Internet and the World Wide Web. Now it's breaking out into the commercial world, and that's changing all the rules. Are you ready?

It's an important time for Open Source with many governments and large organizations switching or seriously considering switching to Open Source. The people at OSI are dedicated to making Open Source successful more broadly and I'm honored and excited to be working with them for this important cause.

Before he was known as Darth Sidious, our boy went by simply The Emperor. What many people don’t realize though, is that this guy, who was once a simple senator known as Palpatine, had his motivations clearly spelled out to the [soon-to-be] Star Wars Generation before any of the films were even released. As a matter of fact, Sci-Fi fans who picked up the Star Wars: From The Adventures Of Luke Skywalker novel ‘written’ by George Lucas in 1976, were privy to the underlining plot of The Phantom Menace months before A New Hope was released. The book had a small prologue called The Journal Of The Whills, which for the most part is all about today’s addition to the Vintage Photo Archive. Facts are kooky.
