What Often Happens when Commercial Source Developers "Go Open"

This is a pretty common tenet in the Open Source world and where commercial developers often go wrong. If you are an ex-commercial developer then you want desperately to reach a "1.0" stage or a "near functional", "mostly baked" stage before going live. You wouldn't want to release something piece meal, would you? After all -- that's the way it's done. -- Scott Johnson

How to rip from vinyl or tape 09/15/2004 11:44 AM
So, you have five hundred tapes and albums of the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, and the like, and want then on your computer? Well, you could spend hundreds of dollars replacing music you already paid for once with CDs. Or, instead of paying twenty bucks per album, you could spend twenty cents per album to convert your tapes and vinyl to CD and rip those. Read more for how. Also, the instructions below will allow you to defeat any copy protection. Period. Just substitute "cheap CD walkman" for "stereo." Caution- doing this in the United Statesor other parts of the world may be a felony. Those in less corrupt, more civilized parts of the world need not fear. Or alternately, you can make CDs of your own band.

Is The Mix Tape Dead Or Thriving?

Is The Mix Tape Dead Or Thriving? 01/22/2004 08:57 AM
A little point-counterpoint over at Salon looking into the issue of whether or not the ease of burning CDs or using MP3 players has killed the mix tape. The argument is that making a mix tape needs to be a careful process, done thoughtfully, listening to the entire thing as it goes, and making sure everything fits. Now, people just throw a random playlist together and burn it to a CD or throw it on an iPod for random listening. The counterpoint, however, points out how much nicer this makes life for most of us. Sure, not all mixes will be as carefully done, but in opening up possibilities and making it easier for more people to experiment with their creativity, a lot more is possible. As the writer points out, if you don't like the ease with which people now make mixes, you're free to go back to making the mixes by hand, painstakingly going through the process of rewinding tapes and changing levels.

A bit of a sticky wicket?

A bit of a sticky wicket? 04/02/2005 08:47 AM

This may be one of the most awkward posts I've ever written, and I'll probably get it wrong and need to revise it later. So if you prefer to read something that's finished that won't be edited, come back and read it tomorrow.

First, the easy part. I won't be able to participate in the Reuters debate next Tuesday in NY. Why? Well, there was a change in personnel, Jay Rosen had a schedule conflict, and the replacement they chose is someone I don't want to have a public discussion with about ethics and credibilty (or a private one for that matter). So the only way out is for me to recuse myself, which I have done.

I guess that wasn't so hard after all. ";->"

Elastic, not sticky

Elastic, not sticky 07/04/2002 07:23 AM
"Elastic sites work well because they embrace the "Webness" of the Web...they allow people to interact and communicate with each other as they prefer to do in the real world. Human relationships are elastic in nature. Like a clingy friend, nothing is worse than a needy Web site sucking all of your time away and not letting you spend any time on other sites. [...] Many companies can't offer products or services with the quality or necessity of Google or the crack-like nature of weblogs, but they can stop worrying so much about fencing customers in like cattle and start dealing with them in human terms."

Competing With Microsoft By Ignoring
Them

Competing With Microsoft By Ignoring
Them
04/15/2004 09:02 PM
One thing that you always hear among new startup companies looking for venture capital is figuring out how they're going to avoid competing with Microsoft. Obviously, it's not true of all startups - some of whom are in completely different areas. However, any software (and many services) company always gets the question "well, how will you deal with it when Microsoft enters your space?" Companies that don't have a good answer don't get funded. Robert Cringely's latest column is all about the best way to compete with Microsoft - and it's a bit counterintuitive, but it makes a lot of sense. The companies that have successfully competed with Microsoft have done so by not worrying about Microsoft. In other words, they've been focused on building innovative products that their customers can use. Microsoft, for all it's strong points, doesn't have the greatest track record at actually innovating (I can already hear some of you scoffing). What they are good at (and, you have to admit, they are good at it) is taking innovative ideas that others have come up with, and then putting a nice, user friendly interface on them and getting it out in the market. So, as Cringely points out, when you decide to turn and face Microsoft and compete directly with them, you're going to be in a lot of trouble - because you've set the rules of the game on their terms, and they've got a lot more money and experience to beat anyone else on those terms. Instead, by pretty much ignoring Microsoft, and coming up with new and innovative products companies can out-innovate them, and not face real competition from them.
