What should Apple do?

What should Apple do?

What should Apple do? 06/29/2004 06:40 PM

As I said previously, I’m not worried about NetNewsWire. I think the situation with Konfabulator and Dashboard is very different from the situation with Safari and NetNewsWire.

The commentary on the Konfabulator situation has been interesting. Some of it has been knee-jerk: “How dare Apple!” and, on the other hand, “Apple is totally right!”

Here’s what I think:

Apple wants to sell more Macs—and I as a Mac developer want them to sell more Macs. One way to do that is to add features and applications to their operating system. Another way to do that is make sure that the competition doesn’t have a ton of cool stuff that they don’t have.

I have absolutely no problem with that. It makes total sense.

But, at the same time, Apple can’t do everything—they need other developers to make software for OS X too.

What concerns me is the message the Dashboard thing sends. It goes like this, “If you come up with a good idea and develop a successful product, we might copy it and bundle it for free with the OS.”

In other words, you could be penalized—heavily—for doing a good job, for doing exactly what every developer works very hard to do.

It would take so little for Apple to have made the Konfabulator folks happy. Some money, some recognition. (“Little” is relative: little to Apple, big to the Konfabulator folks.) And it would let other developers know that Apple cares about OS X developers, that it wants people to develop for OS X, that it’s safe to come up with great ideas and great products.

Forget ethics—it’s just good PR. Worth ten times the price they would have paid.

(A reminder: this post isn’t about NetNewsWire and Safari, which is a completely different thing. This is about Konfabulator and Dashboard.)

Apple vs. Apple Heats Up

Apple vs. Apple Heats Up 09/13/2004 08:08 PM
Since it's inception in 1975, Apple Computer Inc. has been one of the driving forces behind the world-wide adoption of the PC. They are currently wrapped up in a legal battle with "Apple Corps", the company created by the 60's rock group The Beatles.

Apple Corps claims that an 11 year-old agreement between the two companies forbids Apple Computer Inc. from using their "apple" trademark on any application which "principle content is music". Legal insiders claim that the largest out of court settlement on record is in the works that could see Apple Computer dishing out a record settlement.

Both sides have declined to comment on anything related to the impending settlement. An Apple spokesperson did however refer back to an earlier statement reinforcing that the two companies still have "differing interpretations" about the original agreement. The case continues.

Tuning Out the Big Apple, With an Apple

Tuning Out the Big Apple, With an Apple 02/16/2004 01:21 PM

The New York Times has an art icle (registration required) on what the iPod is doing to escalate "New Yorkers' continuing campaign to ignore, snub and look through one another."

The immense storage capacity of iPod and its imitators offers at least the opportunity for total, uninterrupted isolation from one's surroundings for long — extremely long — periods of time. It is now possible to commute, to stroll, to shop, even to go to a Knicks game, without having to listen to another human being, or even the same song. There is no rewinding or CD-changing to permit the outside world to leak inside the cocoon. With a jukebox in your pocket, a suitable tune is always at the ready, no matter your mood. And if you have little white ear buds rammed in your ears, there is always an excuse not to acknowledge fellow humans. "I'm busy right now," iPod users seem to say. "I'll get back to you in 10,000 songs."

Almost as bad as celphones. Maybe worse.

Time Warner, Comcast Get Adelphia,
Comcast Celebrates By Turning Off DNS
04/08/2005 12:13 PM
It looks like Adelphia cable broadband customers who are about to get shifted over to Comcast have plenty of outages to look forward to. The same evening that it's announced that Time Warner and Comcast will jointly devour what's left of Adelphia for about $18 billion, Comcast had major DNS issues leaving many of their users offline. Of course, in explaining the widespread outage, Comcast is using their favorite phrase: "scheduled maintenance." That's the same thing they told me when Comcast turned off my service nearly every weekday last October. I would call every morning and be told that it was "scheduled maintenance." However, when I asked what the schedule was and if I'd have service the next day, I was told they had no idea. Apparently, it doesn't become scheduled until it actually cut you off.

Comcast Outages Prevent Comcast From
Commenting On Comcast Outages
04/14/2005 01:21 PM
Last week, we noted that Comcast was having widespread outage problems, which they chalk ed up to "scheduled maintenance", even though no one was actually informed of said schedule ahead of time. It turns out that schedule is pretty crowded, because all week long, there have been continued reports of recurring outages all across the Comcast network. Comcast, of course, continues to be pretty much silent on the issue, leaving its increasingly fed up call center staff to deal with incredibly angry customers who feel they're getting no information at all. How hard is it to admit that they screwed up and they're working on fixing the problem? Instead of chalking it up to bogus scheduled maintenance or pretending there's nothing wrong, admit what the problem is and give people real updates. People would still be unhappy, but at least they'd feel like the company wasn't ignoring them. Of course, maybe they can't do that because Comcast staffers don't have any internet access either...

Linksys WPC for $57

Linksys WPC for $57 01/10/2004 04:32 PM
Amazon.com is offering the Linksys WPC54G for $66.49 with a $10 rebate direct from Linksys; Dell has it for even less: I don't like to highlight deals, but this is quite a bargain. The Linksys WPC54G is one of the bestselling cards for 802.11g under Windows -- and Mac. (That's right: if you're a Mac user with Mac OS X 10.2.8 or later and AirPort 3.1 or later, you can insert this Linksys card to get 802.11g even if you can't handle AirPort Extreme.) Follow the graphical link at right and add the card to your Amazon.com shopping basket to see the price. There's a link to a downloadable $10 rebate coupon. You can even use Amazon's super saver shipping and pay $0 for delivery in the U.S. I checked out Dell's price on this, and they list the card at $63.95, but my account is a Home account, and they gave me 10 percent off for no good reason and free shipping because it was over $49. I'm not sure if everyone will see the same price, but the net is $57.56 without having to send in a rebate form. You can compare prices for more stores for this item at Shopper.com....

Linksys Boosts Signal--Legally

Linksys Boosts Signal--Legally 07/07/2004 12:55 PM
Linksys releases legal antenna add-ons for several of its Wi-Fi gateways: We've said it in this space before, and we'll say it again: in the U.S., you cannot legally mix and match antennas with Wi-Fi gateways. The FCC's Part 15 rules require that you only use antennas that were certified with the gateway that they were designed for. In response to a recent query made by a colleague of mine, the FCC wrote back a very clear response: When using Part 15 (2.4GHz) devices, mixing and matching components is a violation of the rules. Only systems can be certified. Please see http://wireless.fcc.gov/outreach/2004broadbandforum/comments/ YDI_externalamps.pdf. There you go. Oddly, it is perfectly legal to sell antennas separately from gateways without violating any laws. It's only deploying them that is technically illegal. We haven't heard of any letters or prosecutions, however. Linksys isn't getting around this, but has rather taken several antennas and several gateways and paid the fees to get each of the combinations certified in a matrix. This cost them at least a few hundred thousand dollars in fees and associated expenses entirely separate from the development costs of the antennas themselves. Linksys has two kinds of antennas and matching stands for each. One add-on, the TNC Connector Antenna, is designed for two-antenna systems: WRT54GS, WRT54G, WAP54G, BEFW11S4, and WAP11. The one-antenna device, the SMA Connector Antenna, works with more specialized equipment: WRV54G, WMP54GS, WMP54G, and WET54G. Both antenna types cost $60 each (suggested retail), while the respective antenna stands are another $30. The stands allow mounting the antennas to a wall or ceiling....

Linksys High-Gain Antennas

Linksys High-Gain Antennas 07/08/2004 08:44 AM

linksys_tnc_antenna.jpg image

Linksys has announced a new line of high-gain antennas to be used with some of its more popular Wireless-B (802.11b) and Wireless-G (802.11g) wireless networking products. And get this -- no drivers needed. I know! Unfortunately, for all the talk of what connectors go with what products, they neglect to mention what dBi rating (signal gain) the antennas have. For $60 a pop, plus another $30 if you get the fancy stand, my guess is your can probably pick up something just as powerful or more from somebody like Fab Corp, although you'd be missing out on the matching blue and black Linksys plastic. (Thanks, Josh!)

Update: As Ian Anderson pointed out to me, it says its 7 dBi right on the damn image. I blame the liberal media.
