The Virginia Tech Supercomputer cluster affectionately known as "Big Mac" has posted numbers fast enough to qualify it for third fastest supercomputer, not fourth, as previously thought. The Register notes that the cluster, made up of 2,200 G5 processors in 1,100 Power Macintoshes, has reached 10.28 teraflops, which places it behind the Earth Simulator system at 25.9 teraflops and IBMs ASCI Q system at 13.8 teraflops. Virginia Tech's G5 cluster has officially been ranked as the world's third fastest supercomputer, with a performance of nearly 10.3 trillion calculations per second. Number 1 was Japan's Earth Simulator at 35.6 Tflops per second and number 2 the Los Alamos ASCI Q at 13.8 Tflops. The Virginia Tech cluster, built of 1100 DP 2GHz G5s, cost only $5.2 million, a fraction of the cost of the others in its class.
