Is Verizon Limiting WiFi Access To Only
Registered Computers?

Is Verizon Limiting WiFi Access To Only
Registered Computers?
08/12/2004 01:28 PM
While companies like Speakeasy continue to win customers by telling people they can do whatever they want with the broadband connection into the home, it looks like Verizon may be going in the other direction. An article in the NY Times suggests that Verizon is rolling out a new system that limits WiFi to only "registered" computers. Unfortunately, the article isn't clear at all, and the issue gets confused because the writer, who was blocked, knows she was using a neighbor's WiFi who was actually connected via SBC. The way the article is written, it sounds like she thought Verizon was somehow getting in the way and blocking her SBC borrowing, when it's pretty obvious that she just picked up the signal from someone else's Verizon-connected WiFi. The more interesting question, though, is whether or not Verizon really is requiring users to "register" every computer they want to log on to an account. If they are, it's a ridiculous and backwards thinking policy. While there's nothing wrong with keeping those you don't want off your WiFi, shouldn't it be up to the person paying for the connection? All Verizon has done is made it much more difficult for its own customers to use WiFi in a useful way. There are plenty of situations where there are perfectly good reasons to open up your WiFi to a "non-registered" computer (someone is visiting and wants to use their computer, you buy another computer, you bring home a work laptop, etc.), and Verizon has just made that much more difficult. Also, why should Verizon need to know how many computers I have accessing the connection? They're just selling the connection. All the more reason to go with a more customer friendly broadband ISP.

Here're my running notes from danah boyd's Re venge of the User: Lessons from Creator/User Battles at the O'Reilly Emerging Technology Conference in San Diego.
The response is an attempt to "configure the users" -- constrain behavior to acceptable behavior with messaaging, kicking people off, etc.

This won't work: you can't tell a hacker not to hack. These kids are social hackers. You can stop some bad behavior, but you chase off your best users, too.

Dating doesn't happen because you're in a dating context. Dating arises out of real contexts.

Taking away fakesters didn't make Frienster more real. Friendster is unreal because people never remove their friends, even if they never see them (the exception is when you break up, ironic, because ex-lovers are strong ties!).

Then zoom back out in satellite mode and feel veeeery small. Dare you to stop at just one.

The Real News: While the lazy-ass mainstream media have clogged the airwaves all week with the non-news of the late and dreadful pope's funeral, the marriage plans of British royalty, and various celebrities' trials, the deadly Marburg virus, an Ebola relative, has taken its largest and most devastating toll yet. Sooner or later one of these is going to teach us what The Tipping Point was really about. meanwhile the genocide in Darfur continues unabated, with the death toll of innocents reaching Rwanda proportions and an entire village being razed to the ground yesterday. Oh, and you can thank the NRA and the politicians in their back pockets for making it much easier for terrorists, even those on Al Qaida watch lists, to get AK-47s at the local store in your community.

Apple and Motorola On Track for iTunes

Apple and Motorola On Track for iTunes
Phone
12/19/2004 03:01 PM

iphone_old.jpg imageThis article in Forbes about the work between Apple and Motorola to produce what has (inevitably) become referred to as an 'iPhone' has re-ignited speculation about the degree to which the team-up will be just a simple outlet for iTunes music or a full-fledged move by Apple into the mobile phone market. Nothing in the article implies that Apple has had a hand in designing the user interface or the look of the phone itself, so it's really up in the air until more information is unveiled (possibly at the upcoming MacWorld in January). Some on Slashdot have wondered if the obviously flash memory-based phones are in fact the rumored iPod Flash itself. Unlikely, considering all the noise to the contrary coming out of Apple the last few months, but possible. Assuming the phone (or phones!) and the iPod Flash are two distinct products, Jobs might be reticent to unveil both at the same time, fearing that one might take the shine off the other.

Who knows? The one thing everyone should do, though, is not panic. This isn't new news, and until Apple and Moto decide to show us what they're cooking up (or gadget gods willing, someone leaks it), it's probably best to assume that this is Apple dipping their iTunes toes into the water and seeing how it works out.

Also, this picture is bogus and old, to boot. I post it only so I can disclaim it.

Banana phone

Banana phone 05/17/2004 08:57 AM

I hate it when a song gets stuck in my head without my permission. I have a long history of having my work interrupted by some catchy tune that wants to roll around my brain for a few hours before moving on to the next victim. So, I never should've listened to this little ditty.

My kids got a kick out of it, of course, but now I'm stuck here with "banana phone" in my head, like a loose tooth I'm playing with instead of just yanking out.

ME: Okay, brain, I need to concentrate on improving FeedDemon's Atom support, so let's get to work.
BRAIN: Ring, ring, ring, ring, banana phone!

ME: Uhmmm, yeah...nice tune. So, how about getting to work now?
BRAIN: Ring, ring, ring...

ME: Okay, enough already - I've got a product release coming up, and I need your help!
BRAIN: BANANA PHONE!

So, my day is shot now, but I'm hoping by passing it to you that I can wake up with a clear head tomorrow.

Apple Puts iTunes On A Mobile Phone (But
Is There More?)
07/26/2004 11:16 PM
Sneaking this in towards the end of the day, Apple and Motorola have announced plans for Apple to put a "slimmed down" version of iTunes on a Motorola phone that will be sold next year. It's not quite an iPhone, as it will really just be like similar MP3 playing phones, with fairly limited storage. In fact, some may wonder why Apple would even bother, since the whole point of iTunes is to sell more iPods. You could make the argument that having iTunes on a mobile phone might make someone more willing to buy an iPod also, but it's a stretch. A more intriguing conspiracy theory would be that this is simply "step 1" in a relationship between Motorola and Apple to build wireless iPods, where they roll this offering out to test the partnership, and then work on a wireless iPod secretly in the background.
