Ever wish you could see things through the eyes of another? Well
two Columbia University scientists may have just figured out the next
best thing. Shree K. Nayar, a professor of computer science and
co-director of the Columbia Vision and Graphics Center, have been able
to take high resolution photos of a persons cornea, then use a
computer to analyze the images being reflected back….

Self-Cleaning Glass

They've been developing it
for years, so it's good news to see that the Pilkington Activ glass --
the self-cleaning "eco glass" coated with a film of titanium dioxide
-- is finally being put to use in commercial development. If you
hadn't see it before, the Activ glass has two advantages over normal
glass: the first is the photocatalytic effect that reacts to sunlight
to break down organic dirt, and the second is an enhanced hydrophilic
tendency of water running on the glass to form sheets instead of
droplets (like Rain-X, for instance). The combination of the two
effects means that every time it rains (as I hear it does a lot in UK,
where the technology was developed), the outside of the windows clean
themselves.

05/07/2004 03:28 AMLeonard pulled
the recent under the radar stuff about Pat Tillman into one nice
post. I was impressed with Tillman's resolve and unselfishness in
ditching sports for the military, but after reading the SFGate article he sounds like an interesting and
very human person to boot. The funeral sounded like a perfect send-off,
done the way he would have wanted it, and Ted
Rall is an asshole for making a dark cynical joke of the guy's
ultimate sacrifice.
This is why blogs are a good thing for the existing media - due to
the language used at the funeral, no media outlet in america can carry
it, and probably due to our religious sensibilities, the photo from
the funeral is only running on an overseas news wire. So you can only
get the rest of the story thanks to the millions of eyeballs scouring
the net for interesting angles on what would otherwise be
one-dimensional soundbites.

So you thought the upcoming
enhancements to iChat AV sounded cool? Wait until you see Facetop
a>:
Facetop superimposes transparent images of a computer's
desktop over video images of the user to allow the user to look at the
video and desktop at the same time.
The video shows a ghostly mirror image of the user so that when he
points, his video reflection appears to touch objects on the screen.
The system tracks fingertip position in the video to allow the user to
control the mouse pointer.
Essentially it looks like two users are working with a pane of
glass containing the desktop between them. UNC is developing this
technology as part of their research into software to aid in pair
programming over a distance. Pretty cool. This is possible on OSX
right now, but Windows folks will apparently need to wait for Longhorn
for the neccesary support.

04/13/2005 03:26 AMThe Project Group GmbH (TPG), one of Germanys premier providers of
add-in products, consulting services, and training for Microsoft
Enterprise Project Management (EPM), today announced Version 3.0 of
its flagship PSLink product. PSLink is the worlds leading interface
between Microsoft Project and SAP/R3. Using PSLink, customers can
synchronize project data in both directions between the two
market-leading environments; simplify several tasks; and eliminate the

you a typoholic? It starts so innocently. One day you're mildly
interested in the difference between display and text typefaces. Soon
you can distinguish between teardrop and beak terminals. Suddenly
you're annoying everyone in the movie theater by yelling out the names
of all the fonts used in the credits. What's so scary is that you
never saw it coming. You, my friend, are a type freak.

01/07/2004 04:57 PMThe new glass look of Windows Longhorn is very pretty. This is of
course a challenge to imitate in HTML. It's Internet Explorer for
Windows only. CSS does most of the work, and there's a little bit of
Javascript. It's slow and useless, but it's pretty!
Now if I only had Mozilla's curved borders, Safari's text-shadow,
Opera's speed and SVG's Gaussian blur to finish it off. ?

Sun's Looking Glass Provides 3D View
Sun's Looking Glass Provides 3D View
08/14/2004 10:24 PMRecently Sun Microsystems released to its developers more code
containing its 'Project Look Glass" technology. Project Looking
Glass will offer users a 3D Desktop. Sun is hoping that this
technology will give users a more exciting computing experience, and a
good boost to its public image.
In order for this technology to succeed Sun needs to know what
developers think of it. Without the support from other developers
Project Looking Glass isn't going anywhere. So Sun has shipped early
code of its latest project to developers. This is according to Craig
Nicholas a technical support engineer at Sun. Apparently Project
Looking Glass isn't an operating systems at all (despite earlier
rumors); instead its a 'skin' that nearly sits on top of an operating
system states Craig Nicholas. Though only 3D applications will be
able to take advantage of Project Looking Glass, Sun is working hard
on an application that will automatically rewrite the window
management code in order for it to run in a 3D environment.
Early screenshots and videos of Project Looking Glass look very
promising, but its unclear what Sun hopes to accomplish with it. A
while ago Sun promised that it would open up its code to the
open-source community, but in doing so what would Sun gain. The last
time I checked Sun needed money.

07/02/2004 11:21 AMI was bitching about bad technology to a senior person without a
soapbox for this kind of thing, who wrote back:
“That's how I
feel about my life in general. I get in a car to go to work. Dumb,
and filthy. I use horrible cellular technologies that drop 5 times on
my way to work. I use airplanes that are 30 year old technology to
fly, for God's sake, to do a keynote where most
people can't see me, and to do 10 customer meetings I'd rather
do with a very high quality video conference. And then I use a laptop
whose UI hasn't advanced in, oh, 14 years.” I’m a bit more
cheery than my correspondent about user interfaces, but is that an
excellent wake-up call or what?

07/13/2004 01:59 PMBack when I was promoting
Dancing Barefoot, (which has gotten a
really nice bounce in sales this last week -- I'm sure because of WWdN
readers -- so thank you!) I talked about it a LOT on my site. Partly,
that was because
Barefoot-related things dominated my life at
the time . . . but it was also because I've been told (and
experienced firsthand) that books only sell as well as their authors
promote them. This is the best way I have to promote my books on my
own, so I'm going to do that in the coming months. I just want to be
honest about that right now. If this sort of thing bugs you, stop
reading now, and go check out the best combination since

technology we call "window blinds."

07/06/2004 11:39 AM
A company called Data Vision has developed a new
15-inch LCD touchscreen called 'Thru-Glass' for retail stores that
works through windows. The touch part works through windows, I mean,
not just the light; that wouldn't be that impressive. Beyond that,
it's pretty much just a regular screen, but it could be an interesting
way to show off some of your products and answer simple questions even
after the lights have been dimmed for the evening. For the
£2,000 purchase price Data Vision will even install it for you,
which is nice of them.
