Singer Wesley Willis was
an artist as well. I'm not generally a big fan of
"outsider art," as this might be called, but as raw
as these pictures may be, they have a quality to them I don't think
I've seen before. Enjoy.

Jack Valenti says stupid things --
really, really stupid things
08/03/2004 07:46 PMTim Wu has rounded up some of the dumbest things that Jack Valenti
said -- and he's found some real howlers, things that make Jack's
infamous condemnation of the VCR ("the Boston Stranger of the American
film industry") look like a walk in the park.
On the nascent cable industry, in 1974
"[Cable will become] a huge parasite in the marketplace, feeding and
fattening itself off of local television stations and copyright owners
of copyrighted material. We do not like it because we think it wrong
and unfair."
On the dangers on media concentration, 1984 Op-Ed
"Will a democratic society allow just three corporate entities to
wield unprecedented dominion over television, the most decisive voice
in the land? There are now only three national networks .... There
will never be more than three national networks."
On the public domain, 1995
"A public domain work is an orphan. No one is responsible for its
life. But everyone exploits its use, until that time certain when it
becomes soiled and haggard, barren of its previous virtues. How does
the consumer benefit from the steady decline of a film's quality?"

Oliver 1.2.0 (Default branch)
06/24/2005 07:14 PM

Oliver (formerly "WebShare") is a PHP-based FTP front-end, released
under the GPL. It allows people to access files
normally only available via FTP, effectively
providing users with a complete Web-based file
management system that, if SSL is enabled on the
Web server, uses a single secure connection. This
makes it far simpler to use through a firewall.
At present, Oliver has only been tested with
ProFTPd and PureFTPd but it should work with many others.
License: GNU General Public License (GPL)
Changes:
This release adds Czech, Bulgarian, and Japanese translations. Syslog
or flat file logging of logins has been added. Files now have "direct
links" associated with them. These are simple URLs that reference the
file directly and may be distributed to valid users, for example as a
link in an email. HTTP authentication is used to validate the users in
this case. To aid upgrading, a simple Perl script, updateconf.pl, has
been including that helps to migrate config settings.

Oliver Sacks and his iridium ingot
Oliver Sacks and his iridium ingot
08/16/2004 02:15 PMGeorge Lazenby wrote a must-read Live Journal entry about the famous
neurologist/author Oliver Sacks and his iridium fetish. Sacks had
several buttons of super-dense iridium that he wanted to melt into a
single ingot. Iridium has a very high melting temperature (2,446 C),
so Lazenby and Sacks went to a company that has an electron beam
furnace. The "batsh*t insane Russsians" who worked there melted the
iridium buttons while
LazenbyTheodore Gray* shot video, which you can see at
hisLazenby's site.
A few months
ago, Oliver bought a kilo of these buttons, and kept them in, what was
for a while, the heaviest 6 fl. oz. jar of current jam in the
universe. While I was up there, he gave me one of these buttons, which
I promptly nearly killed myself with. But I'm getting ahead of myself.
So Oliver has these buttons in this current jam jar. The next
logical step is to make the buttons one with each other, to get as
close as possible to theoretical density. How to achieve this? Max's
arc furnace can only fuse 5 gram buttons (poorly) into irregular
buttons of about 50 grams. No, this project calls for industry, with
its pumping pistons, its smoking smokestacks and desolated landscapes.
Enter ********** [company name deleted]. Exeunt pumping pistons,
smoking smokestacks and desolated landscapes. This, is in fact, the
setting for the most advanced high purity metal processing plant in
the United States.
UPDATE George sez: Thanks for posting the
story to BB, there's just one thing, I didn't shoot video or take any
pictures, that was all the work of Theodore Gray. Link

OLIVER Data Viewer 2.3.0 (Default
branch)
03/17/2005 03:35 AM

OLIVER is MassGIS's OnLIne data ViewER. Written as
a stand-alone Java application (and deployed via
Java Web Start) it allows you to browse, view, and
download (if supported) data from the MassGIS
maintained WMS and WFS servers. In short, it is a
specific take on a WMS/WFS client.
Changes:
Minor bugfixes, but a major internal rearchitecture. A ZIP code is no
longer require for geocoding, and there is now support for
cross-street geocoding. The ability to zoom to a specific scale by
double-clicking (or right-clicking) on the scale-bar has been added.
Many new extensibility points are included in the codebase. The
ability to create "custom" viewers by picking and choosing
tools/features from the base viewer is now implemented in a basic
manner.

"Innate intelligence has to do with capability and
ignorance to do with variables such as educational opportunity and
personal diligence. But the conundrum remains. Is intellect
important in presidents? If Americans can't solve the question
definitively in the matter of John Kerry and George Bush, we damn sure
ought to make an educated guess."

Does CBS think we're that stupid?
02/10/2004 02:42 AMI'd like to someday live in a country where a quick nipple shown on
TV isn't the end of civilization, and that's not what irks me about
the halftime show tonight. What does get me about the Superbowl
halftime show is CBS insisting it was an accident,
calling it a "wardrobe malfunction."
It's funny, when you collect the evidence, I wonder if CBS really
thinks the public is stupid enough to believe it:
1. It was planned from the start.
2. There are snaps on
her outfit clearly visible, designed to be unsnapped. Most
garments are sewn together sans snaps and don't fall apart.
3. She's wearing a "nipple shield" to partially cover her breast. If it was
unplanned why on earth would she have this huge chunk of metal there?
Was it to skirt some FCC rule against an entirely naked breast?
4. Worst of all: She has a
single coming out which is coincidentally being rushed to the
airwaves based on the "overwhelming worldwide demand." Check the
timestamp on the bogus press release, it was posted before the game
was even over.
Is it all a big coincidence or is this how controversy is
manufactured to sell records these days?

Howard Stern and the First Amendment
Howard Stern and the First Amendment
04/09/2004 07:55 PMThe odious Clear Channel radio barony's firing of
Howard Stern only puts a period at the end of the sentence. The
people who run that company are contemptible, because their action
combines flagrant politics and cowardice -- quite a combination.
But save your real contempt for the FCC, its cowardly chairman, Michael
Powell, and his craven colleagues. Egged on by a Congress that has
shown frightening disdain for free speech, the FCC has gone on its
only holy war against "indecency." (If any of this bothers you, please
contact the FCC and say
so.)
What's indecent is rankly political and financial motives that spit on
the First Amendment. Stern,
as I've noted, is not my cup of tea. But I'll support advertisers who
support him in the future.

America's public enemy #1, radio-dude Howard
Stern, made an off-hand remark on this morning's show -- he claims he
writes a secret weblog. Stern said he writes as "another character"
and that only "about 4 people are in on the joke." OK, he's almost
certainly not Rance,
who repeatedly claims to be an actor and not a fat guy eating Twinkies
in his basement, laughing at a credulous, gossip-starved public.
If anyone out there has candidates for what might be Stern's secret

Howard Stern's anti-Bush
