Is Online Porn Growing Up?

Is Online Porn Growing Up? 12/10/2003 01:53 PM
CNN has discovered that online porn is big business, which is probably news to you if you just happened to stumble onto this here internet thing. Otherwise, you might have heard that billions are being made in online porn. While there are still a lot of small, independent (some might say "sketchy") players in the space, as it matures, larger players are emerging. It's also raising certain legal questions, and some are saying that the Supreme Court may need to revisit the porn/obscenity issue for the first time in decades. While the last big ruling focused on community standards, that causes problems when the "community" can be anywhere. Meanwhile, it seems like porn is becoming so mainstream in some areas, that it's not even considered quite as taboo in polite company any more. That, at least, appears to be the goal of sites like Fleshbot and Variety's new "Porning Report".

Following up on this post about the Newsweek "Porn Puppet/XXXChurch" article BoingBoing reader Jake points to another odd bit of Christian anti-porn propaganda. This short movie from "Project God" is "very 'Office Space' meets the prude," says Jake, and ends with the biblical quote, " If your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away."

One of the great things about America is that here, you're perfectly free to gouge your right eye out if the spirit moves you (IANAL, but I'm thinking there's probably some kind of religious freedom protection for faith-based body modification). And until what's left of our constitution is gouged out, everyone else is free to watch, read, or listen to all the smut they like in the privacy of their own laptops.

Cop, sheriff work a little too closely,
produce online porn video
05/26/2004 12:13 PM
A San Francisco cop is under investigation for making a porn video with a colleague from the sherrif's department. Officials say an internal probe (ahem) is forthcoming.
In the video, which was posted on a pay-per-view Web site, Tenderloin beat cop Darryl Watts played out a fantasy where he pretended to be a john and a sheriff's department employee acted the part of a prostitute referred to as "Myra."

The video did not tap into any law enforcement themes common in the pornography industry. No badges, batons, uniforms or pistols were produced during the film, police said. (...)Police sources said that Watts, who has been on the force for three years, is a "good, productive street cop." Last year, he was hailed for capturing a man who was chasing another man with a butcher knife near Union Square.

Li nk, and honorary link-fu degree awarded to the first BoingBoing reader who finds a copy of the illicitly-produced video or the location of the website where it was first posted. Imitations will be promptly deleted. (Thanks, Marc)

A month has passed with no news...

A month has passed with no news... 06/22/2005 02:25 AM

Almost exactly a month ago today I sent off a form to an organisation called Traceline to ask them to help me find my father. Three days later I wrote a little post about my uncertainty about what would happen next. Two and a half weeks later, I briefly alluded to the fact that I'd not heard anything yet. A week further on, and we're back to today, and is there any news? Unfortunately, no.

Of course, I honestly don't know what to expect. This process could take a month, it could take two months, it could take six. I think I assumed I'd have heard something by now because the expedited process (where you know their date of birth) is supposed to only take a week. But time just keeps passing with very little to show for it. At the moment I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt and assume that they're not just torturing me, but give it another month or so and I might rename them in slightly more colourful language.

So how have I been dealing with it? Difficult question. Thanks for asking. I guess the most honest answer would probably that I'm kind of confused about the whole thing. About two weeks ago, in the middle of a particularly stressful time at work, I was in a meeting and my phone rang. The caller's number was withheld. I couldn't answer the phone in the room. I hung up on them. They rang again, so I turned my phone off. They didn't leave a message. After the meeting I started asking all the people I thought who might have called me, but none of them had done. And gradually I started to wonder to myself - who could have been at the other end of the line? Who had I hung up on? What did it mean? What had I done? Had I just lost my chance forever? These thoughts stayed with me for days.

In retrospect, what this situation means is simply that this whole process clearly means an awful lot to me - much much more than I had been expecting. This was probably not a pivotal moment - in fact it was almost certainly a trivial moment - no more or less nerve-wracking that the rest of the month has been. I just momentarily had something in particular I could focus on. Or at least so I tell myself. Patience, Tom. Be patient.

One development that has happened is that I decided to talk to my mother about the whole thing. For some reason, I had decided originally that I was going to do this completely on my own without getting the rest of my family involved. I don't think I can explain why particularly except to say that there are things in the world that I find hard to look at directly and family don't tend to let you keep things in your peripheral vision. There's probably some other stuff going on too - I've wanted independence from my family and from restrictive encompassing structures like families for years as well. This could have been another attempt to assert that. But that's a whole other industrial-sized can of worms that I think I should probably avoid opening right now.

Anyway, I don't think my mother realises how strange and difficult this whole absent father thing is for me, or how much bluster and brashness I've had to cultivate to be even vaguely able to approach it head on. So when I said that I had something that I wanted to tell her (and when I obviously had trouble getting it out), my liberal mother (with so much faith in me, evidently) immediately assumed that I had contracted some fatal gay disease. When I explained instead that I'd decided to look for my father, she seemed totally cool about the whole thing, almost a little surprised that I found the whole thing so emotionally charged. Typically she was also terribly - aggravatingly - efficient about it too. She kept trying to tell me what I should be doing next, even though I repeatedly pointed out that it had taken me twenty odd years to get to this stage and that maybe I wasn't quite ready to treat the whole thing like a crusade quite yet.

I think I finally got through to her when I talked about my biggest concern - that I would find my father only for him to be repulsed by me because I'm gay. I'm not ashamed of being gay - in fact I'm proud of myself for having the nerve to be publically gay and not hiding it. And normally, I'm not terribly interested whether other people have issues with me being gay or not. But with your own father... I don't know... I think I'm looking for him in part to help me understand where I came from and why I am the way I am. He seems to be the closest in the family to sharing my passions and interests. I kind of want him to be proud of what i've accomplished - i don't want to be a let-down or an embarrassment. I certainly don't want to be ahborent to him. I don't want him to find me disgusting. And I have to face the possibility that he might. He's in his sixties. There's no guarantee that he's of a liberal mindset, no way of knowing what his reaction might be at all. It's a concern. It's a big concern.

So what now? I'm in the States. I'm going to conferences. I'm keeping myself busy and thinking about wider and more disparate material. When I get home in a week's time, if there's still no word from Traceline, then I guess I have to ring them up. I need to know what's been happening. I need to know what progress has been made. And in the meantime, I have to hope that if we ever do meet that he's prepared to be non-judgemental and engage with me in some way. What more can I hope for? What more can I do?

where skin porn and food porn collide

where skin porn and food porn collide 03/23/2005 10:09 AM

mmmm

It's fun to use google and see what it returns when searching for 'sticky buns' as, well, the imagination is a poor substitute for reality. When food and skin porn collide it gets fairly ugly pretty quickly. Sticky buns are likely the source of inspiration for the Finnish bostonkakku which are served like a pie rather than the individual buns. One of the guys at work quipped that it is served this way because you can feed 20 instead of 8 people.

I figured that since I was making dallaspulla that I'd make the inspiration for texaspulla and bostonkakku so that my test subjects would know just what they had been missing all these years. :) The dough is a snap to make even without a mixer and is much easier to work with than the pulla dough. The only drawback is the time spent waiting for the dough to rise. With a four-day weekend approaching where absolutely nothing will be open and we'll likely have crappy weather given that it's a holiday, what could be better than making a pan of sticky buns and eating them instead of chocolate eggs? These are, by far, the best cinnamon rolls I've ever made and my test subjects consumed them in a shark chum feeding frenzy. Two guys even asked me for the recipe.

Sticky Buns, a.k.a. caramel rolls or cinnamon rolls

Makes: 12 sticky buns
Time: ~30 minutes prep, 3 hours for dough rising
Source: Cook's Illustrated

This recipe has four components: the dough that is shaped into buns, the filling that creates the swirl in the shaped buns, the caramel glaze that bakes in the bottom of the baking dish along with the buns, and the pecan topping that garnishes the buns once baked. Although the ingredient list may look long, note that many ingredients are repeated. Leftover sticky buns can be wrapped in foil or plastic wrap and refrigerated for up to 3 days, but they should be warmed through before serving. They reheat quickly in a microwave oven (for 2 buns, about 2 minutes at 50 percent power works well); they can also be put into a 325F/175C-degree oven for about 8 minutes.

Dough

  • 3 large eggs at room temperature
  • 3/4 cup buttermilk (2 dl piima) at room temperature
  • 1/4 cup (.5 dl) granulated sugar
  • 1 1/4 teaspoons table salt
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons instant yeast  (1 packet sunnuntai dry yeast)
  • 4 1/4 cups (10,5 dl) unbleached all-purpose flour, plus additional for dusting work surface
  • 6 tablespoons (85g) unsalted butter, melted and cooled until warm
  1. In bowl of standing mixer, whisk eggs; add buttermilk and whisk to combine.
  2. Whisk in sugar, salt, and yeast.
  3. Add about 2 cups (5 dl) flour and butter; stir with wooden spoon or rubber spatula until evenly moistened and combined.
  4. Add all but about 1/4 cup (1/2 dl) remaining flour and knead with dough hook at low speed 5 minutes.
  5. Check consistency of dough (dough should feel soft and moist but should not be wet and sticky; add more flour, if necessary); knead at low speed 5 minutes longer (dough should clear sides of bowl but stick to bottom).
  6. Turn dough out onto lightly floured work surface; knead by hand about 1 minute to ensure that dough is uniform (dough should not stick to work surface during hand kneading; if it does stick, knead in additional flour 1 tablespoon at a time).
  7. Lightly spray large bowl or plastic container with nonstick cooking spray. Transfer dough to bowl, spray dough lightly with cooking spray, then cover bowl tightly with plastic wrap.
  8. Set in warm, draftfree spot until doubled in volume, 2 to 2 1/2 hours.

Caramel Glaze

  • 6 tablespoons or 85g unsalted butter
  • 3/4 cup (1,75 dl) light brown sugar, packed
  • 3 tablespoons corn syrup, light or dark
  • 2 tablespoons heavy cream
  • 1 pinch table salt
  1. Meanwhile, combine all ingredients for glaze in small saucepan.
  2. Cook over medium heat, whisking occasionally, until butter is melted and mixture is thoroughly combined.
  3. Pour mixture into nonstick metal 13- by 9-inch (33cm x 23cm) baking dish.
  4. Using rubber spatula, spread mixture to cover surface of baking dish.
  5. Set baking dish aside.

Cinnamon-Sugar Filling

  • 3/4 cup (1,75 dl) light brown sugar, packed
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1 pinch table salt
  • 1 tablespoon or 15g unsalted butter, melted
  • Raisins (optional)
  1. Combine brown sugar, cinnamon, cloves, and salt in small bowl.
  2. Mix with a fork until thoroughly combined, using fingers to break up sugar lumps.
  3. Set aside.

To assemble and bake buns:

  1. Turn dough out onto lightly floured work surface.
  2. Gently shape dough into rough rectangle with long side nearest you.
  3. Lightly flour dough and roll to 16-inch x 12-inch (40cm x 30cm) rectangle.
  4. Brush dough with 1 tablespoon melted butter, leaving 1/2-inch border along top edge; with butter remaining on brush, brush sides of baking dish.
  5. Sprinkle filling mixture over dough, leaving 3/4-inch border along top edge; smooth filling in even layer with your hand, then gently press mixture into dough to adhere. Add rasins if you desire.
  6. Beginning with long edge nearest you, roll dough into taut cylinder.
  7. Firmly pinch seam to seal and roll cylinder seam-side down.
  8. Very gently stretch to cylinder of even diameter and 18-inch (45 cm) length; push ends in to create even thickness.
  9. Using a serrated knife and gentle sawing motion, slice cylinder in half, then slice each half in half again to create evenly sized quarters.
  10. Slice each quarter evenly into thirds, yielding 12 ~1.5 inch (3,75 cm) buns (end pieces may be slightly smaller).
  11. Arrange buns cut-side down in prepared baking dish.
  12. Cover tightly with plastic wrap and set in warm, draft-free spot until puffy and pressed against one another, about 1 hour.
  13. Meanwhile, adjust oven rack to lowest position, place pizza stone (if using) on rack, and heat oven to 350F/175C degrees.
  14. Place baking pan on pizza stone; bake until golden brown and center of dough registers about 180F/82C degrees on instant-read thermometer, 25 to 30 minutes.
  15. Cool on wire rack 10 minutes; invert onto rimmed baking sheet, large rectangular platter, or cutting board.
  16. With rubber spatula, scrape any glaze remaining in baking pan onto buns; let cool while making pecan topping.

Pecan Topping

  • 3 tablespoons or 50g unsalted butter
  • 1/4 cup (.5 dl) light brown sugar, packed
  • 3 tablespoons corn syrup, light or dark
  • 1 pinch table salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract  or vanilla sugar
  • 3/4 cup (1,75 dl) pecans or walnuts, toasted in a skillet over medium heat until fragrant and browned, about 5 minutes, then cooled and coarsely chopped
  1. Combine butter, brown sugar, corn syrup, and salt in small saucepan and bring to simmer over medium heat, whisking occasionally to thoroughly combine.
  2. Off heat, stir in vanilla and pecans until pecans are evenly coated.
  3. Using soup spoon, pour heaping tablespoon of nuts and topping over center of each sticky bun.
  4. Continue to cool until sticky buns are warm, 15 to 20 minutes.
  5. Pull apart or use knife to cut apart sticky buns; serve.

No wonder this skull is smiling

« A smiling skull in Hagelstams Bookstore. A row of skulls depicting the Hagelstam family tree were there for Halloween and have reappeared for the holidays with festive hats and skull porn. Yes, that picture behind the happy skull is really what it appears to be. Antique porn for every fetish bound in leather. It makes you briefly wonder what kind of porn your grandfather enjoyed just before you take a fork to your eyeballs to remove the mere thought of it. »

Last year, Helsinki lost a stately old willow tree in a freak storm. The city decided to leave it be and see if it would sprout in the coming spring. In October, the stump was declared dead although enough material from the tree was saved to grow some saplings so the tree lives on. The Sanomat mentioned this week that there is now a small booklet, Vanhan Piilipuun Alla available at the Helsinki City Museum with stories about the tree and pictures over the past 100 years. Perhaps they'll plant some of the saplings grown from the dead willow in the new Kampinkeskus when it's done.

We spent all day Saturday watching all of the Lord of the Rings extended DVD editions with friends of ours in one 13-hour marathon. The movies and company were great, even if I did feel like a Hobbit towards the end of the day. The new material in Return of the King was good but it didn't complement the movie as well as the previous 2 extended editions had. I think there should be some sort of medal that one should receive for managing to make it through all 3 DVDs within an 18-hour period of time. I went to sleep with the visage of Gollum speaking like Yoda, maybe because the last time I sat through a trilogy in one sitting was Star Wars which also had a short, green creature with a raspy voice. "My pressssious you are!"

I was leafing through Deko, a new magazine that is mostly just pictures and design voyeurism that I suspect won't last very long, when I saw a little blurb about giving a fairly useless object d'art, a mini Alvar Aalto dish in the famous lake shape, a purpose by using it as a cookie cutter. I decided to give it a try and my analysis is that it is the most ineffective 15 euro cookie cutter anyone could ever purchase since the glass edges are far too thick which renders it unable to make a clean cut no matter how thick or thin the dough is. It would be much easier if someone just made a 2 euro cookie cutter in the same shape. Maybe use the dish as a cheese dip mold....perhaps there should be a contest to discover an actual useful purpose for these little tourist trinkets. :)

When did Porn become mainstream? John Walsh asks the question in the Independant. The question might seem silly save for this. People in Buffulo asked to pose niked in public? Why not, Ameri can athletes do it, Spike Lee endorses it, and even Matt Damon wants to screw in front of you. Bosnian men don't seem to share Matt's fervor for the camera, but everyone is talking sex, even those icky old folks who frequent online football magazines. Why not have your tittilation in-your-face! Does the line between erotica and pornography even exist any more? many of the links via World Sex News.

Porn Trackers

Porn Trackers 08/31/2004 03:21 PM

They look at porn all day, so others won't be able to: I always new that somewhere there was a hive of people keeping those site-blocking databases up-to-date. How can they keep up?

Some days, work is so horrible that Christa Adams must leave her desk and take a walk around the building to calm down. The horrifying, violent sexual images that pop up on her computer screen still unnerve her.

But she is no longer shocked. After all, she went looking for those images. It is part of the job when you are a porn-tracker.

She is one of about a dozen "verifier technicians" at 8e6 Technologies, an Orange-based firm that develops software for organizations seeking to keep employees or children from looking at inappropriate Web sites.

Porn For Liberty!

Porn For Liberty! 08/10/2004 08:03 PM
You wanna be free? Accep t pornography. Or so says Salman Rushdie. He argues that a free and civilised society should be judged by its willingness to accept pornography. So which comes first, the liberty, or the boobies?

Porn-mail-art

Porn-mail-art 08/10/2004 10:34 AM
French blogger Philippe De Jonckeere created this online chronicle of his quest to successfully transmit porn-themed mail-art using the US postal system. The images you see on his website are original snapshots of the real envelopes that were sent from a post office in Chicago. Each of the collages were cut-and-pasted from wank mags, inserted into translucent envelopes, then sent with 25-cent American flag stamps. Link (Thanks, Jean-luc)

P2P Porn Is Not The Problem

P2P Porn Is Not The Problem 12/12/2003 12:51 PM
A few months back, when Senator Orrin Hatch was convinced by some wealthy backers that the real problem with P2P file sharing systems was that porn was available, we wondered how that was any different from the internet. There's lots of porn on the internet, but politicians aren't running around saying that we need to shut it down. But, because of some misleading statements by the entertainment industry, politicians are freaking out about the file sharing networks. If they do try to do something to shut them down, of course, the porn will just move elsewhere where it will be harder to shut it down. In fact, the porn already is elsewhere - as it has been all along. The U.S. General Accounting Office (GAO) is telling Senator Hatch that P2P porn is no worse than what's already available on the web. Hatch's original statement was based on a GAO report, but they're now saying that wasn't based on a comprehensive study, but tips that were sent in to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. Only about 1.4% of those tips concerned P2P networks.

Who Is Pressing the PSP Porn?

Who Is Pressing the PSP Porn? 06/22/2005 01:57 AM

glayz.jpgGamesIndustry.biz is running a story where a Sony exec calls the recently-announced GLAY'z PSP Porn "utterly undesirable," going on to claim that they are powerless to stop its production. So who then, if not Sony, is making the PSP UMD discs the Japanese porn will be printed on? I was under the impression that part of the reason for using UMD in the PSP was that Sony would be able to control the manufacturing, and thusly get a cut from every disc pressed (a la Nintendo and its cartridges). If that's not the case, who is pressing the discs, and what prevents them from offering things like, say, blank, burnable UMD media and drives? I'm asking these as questions, because I don't know, but would like to. Is it Sony being coy or could we actually have a rogue UMD producer on our hands?
