Woman finds finger in Wendy's chili

Woman finds finger in Wendy's chili 03/24/2005 12:05 AM
David Pescovitz: No, it's not an urban legend. Yesterday, a woman at a Wendy's in Santa Clara, California put a spoonful of chili in her mouth, paused, and spit out a human fingertip. From the San Francisco Chronicle:
Santa Clara County Health Officer Dr. Martin Fenstersheib said today the woman was horrified "due to the unpleasant sensation of having this (object) in her mouth...."

The restaurant at 1405 Monterey Highway was temporarily closed Tuesday night to allow health officials to impound the remaining chili, which was prepared on site, using a variety of ingredients. Health officials also seized all of the restaurant's remaining stock of ingredients, which will be inspected, and traced back to their manufacturer.

Since all of the workers at the restaurant were in possession "of all 10 of their fingers," health inspectors assume the finger likely entered the food chain as a result of the manufacturing process, according to county Environmental Resources Director Ben Gale.

Snake Handler

Snake Handler 08/17/2004 03:39 PM

Just got back from my first bike ride since havin g surgery a few months back, and it felt great to hit the road again. I'm definitely out of shape compared to before the surgery - in my bike shorts, I probably looked like a can of biscuits exploded - but I did manage to ride the hills without keeling over.

The highlight of the ride was when I saw this little feller in the road:

Rattlesnake

Yes, that's a rattlesnake, and it's actually the second time I've seen one while biking. The first time was much more memorable. See, I had gone for a longer ride that time, and had to stop for a nature call. No restroom was in sight, so I climbed down an embankment where I would be hidden from passers-by. I had barely started to take care of business when I heard a very loud rattle directly in front of me. Back then I had no idea there were rattlesnakes here in Tennessee, but there was no mistaking that sound. I looked up to see a medium-sized rattler just a couple feet away, coiled up and looking very angry at me for soiling his favorite resting place.

Now, for the sake of my female readers, I should explain that when a guy is exposed like that, he definitely doesn't want to see something with sharp fangs staring at him.

Luckily, I was able to back away - veerrryyy slowly - and avoid an embarrassing bite.

Not long after that ride, I was biking in the very same spot when an owl suddenly swooped down in front in me, grabbed a snake that was hiding in some grass, then flew back in front of me with the snake dangling from its talons. I remember thinking to myself, "I hope that's the same damn snake that surprised me."

Anti-BitTorrent snake-oil

Anti-BitTorrent snake-oil 08/22/2004 07:29 AM
Cory Doctorow: Aconix, a "security firm" has a new product that lets corporations block BitTorrent packets (Q. Er, like a firewall rule? A. Yeah, like that, except more expensive). In order to promote it, they're telling lies about BitTorrent, telling their customers that BitTorrent users can "inadvertently share files containing sensitive information, and the P2P application installer may automatically share files or folders -- including password files -- without the user's knowledge," which is simply untrue. What this "product" does is block access to a file-transfer protocol that is widely used in many different fields, from providing Congressional hearings footage to delivering urgently needed software like the Windows XP Service Pack 2, to shipping entire operating systems like the many Linux distros that circulate via BT.
"In today's corporate environment, there are very few legitimate business uses for consumer P2P file sharing," said Michael Osterman, president of Osterman Research. "Unauthorized activity within an enterprise network creates situations in which companies run the risk of security leaks or illegal activity. Products like Akonix Enforcer allow IT departments to block and monitor all P2P activity, removing another security concern from IT managers and freeing up network bandwidth for legitimate business communications."

"BitTorrent is a growing and popular P2P file-sharing network, particularly for movie files. In addition to the risk of music copyright violation, disclosure of corporate data and potential virus infection, BitTorrent users expose their company to potential legal action from organizations like the Motion Picture Association of America," said Francis Costello, chief marketing officer at Akonix Systems. "We are continuously working with more than 250 customers, including three of the largest global media companies, to address the latest security threats from file sharing. Blocking users of the BitTorrent network provides our customers with the most complete solution for managing P2P available."

Companies like this are the reason so many enterprise users treat corporate IT as damage and route around them. Link (via Waxy)

It takes a snake to prove that .NET is
fast for scripting
12/11/2003 07:18 AM
Some language experts have said publicly that scripting languages based on .NET and Java Bytecodes will always perform poorly due to limitations in bytecode design.

Jim Hugunin, contrarian to the core, has posted an email which suggests that .NET could possibly be faster than C by comparing Python written in C (CPython) with one written in .NET (IronPython). Jim is the original author of the Java implementation of Python (Jython), so he has the skills to back his claim.

If his claims are correct, I think that the push to move scripting languages (eg. PHP) to Parrot or similar bytecode systems which can be Just-In-Time compiled will accelerate.
