Researching Medical Literature on the Internet -- 2003 Update
http://www.llrx.co m/features/medical2003.htm

The proliferation of medical web sites is good news for the researcher with a small to non-existent medical collection. Legal researchers often have to consult medical sources, so it is fortunate that the Internet provides free access to a great deal of the medical literature, either in full text or citation/abstract format, and that it offers search capabilities good enough to fulfill most information needs. In addition, public demand for medical information on the World Wide Web is constant. Many professionally-oriented health care sites have evolved to meet consumer needs, and consumer-oriented sites often include professional literature. Journals, dictionaries, textbooks, indexes - all can be found on the Net in growing numbers. The sources are varied; they include publishers, government agencies, professional organizations, and health libraries.

Update on my Medical Condition

Update on my Medical Condition 07/16/2004 03:31 AM

Went to see my Neurology doctor today, and after him asking me about 50 questions, taping on my knee's and various other places and sending me to Radiology for 3 separate x-rays and over to the Brace shop to order me what's called a LCL which supposedly cost about $5000.00 he gave me the thumbs up to return to work tomorrow.

I am a bit apprehensive as I still cannot sit straight up for long periods. Guess I will be taking frequent breaks. Hopefully I can keep up with the pace my job demands. I am not looking forward to spending 6 more weeks in the brace but hey it could have been much worse. Supposedly the LCL will be more comfortable. The attendant that measured me said I will loose about 10 pounds during the first month sounds good to me already lost 10 in the first brace and the wife is jealous. Physical Therapy will be lite for the first 6 weeks then he is going to cut them loose on me.. Oh boy!

Xeni Jardin: Following up on this previous BoingBoing post, reader Damo says,
A related editorial by Robert Jay Lifton entitled "Doctors and Torture" appeared in a recent issue of the New England Journal of Medicine, the world's preeminent medical journal. In one passage, Lifton describes how military interrogators were given access to detainees' medical records, which were then used as tools in the interrogation process. He also discusses how doctors "brought a medical component to what I call an 'atrocity-producing situation...'"

New Yorker cartoon editor researching
humor as a brain function

New Yorker cartoon editor researching
humor as a brain function
04/08/2005 03:19 PM
Mark Frauenfelder: Mark Hurst of Good Experience interviewed New Yorker cartoon editor Bob Mankoff, who is working with the psychology department at the University of Michigan to research how humor works in the brain using cartoons as the input.
The experience of humor is similar to the “ah-ha” moment of two things coming together. For humor, two things have to come together to produce the experience of laughter. Normal and abnormal; these things reconciled in a moment, and usually it’s a normal situation violated in some way that we can tolerate. You have to have something normal that becomes abnormal, or something that looks abnormal and then become normal.

So, normal: there’s a guy on the phone, saying “No, Thursday’s out. How about never - is never good for you?” Everything is normal - the office, the syntax of politeness - and yet the message is rude. We have a violation where we have a normal situation.
