FeedDemon 1.10 RC1 Expires May 11

FeedDemon 1.10 RC1 Expires May 11 05/07/2004 01:26 PM

To avoid customers accidentally using pre-release software long after an update is available, I always hard-code my beta versions so that they expire after a certain date.

FeedDemon 1.10 RC1 is no exception, and it expires on May 11. Now, RC1 was released in March, so I figured I'd have RC2 available well before May 11. However, my recent surgery delayed things quite a bit, so I'm now feverishly working on RC2 to avoid having RC1 expire on everyone.

Once RC2 is available, I'll post an announcement here.

GIF LZW Compression Patent Expires

GIF LZW Compression Patent Expires 06/21/2004 11:04 AM

At long last, the LZW compression patent has expired. It expired in the US on June 20, 2003, but it didn't expire in the UK, France, Germany, Italy and Japan until last week. I remember having to obtain a license to support GIF display in HomeSite, so I join the thousands of other license holders in celebrating the end of this patent.

“Microsoft has issued a formal fix for a problem in Windows XP Service Pack 2 that appeared almost immediately after the update’s release. ADVERTISEMENT The problem, which affected many VPN users, causes errors when programs attempt to connect to loop-back addresses other than 127.0.0.1. Service Pack 2 blocks all such addresses; users receive an error message saying that they cannot establish a connection. Microsoft had issued a hotfix for the problem last month, but the…

No weekend

No weekend 05/28/2004 05:06 AM
You know... I have nothing planned for the weekend (except for the optional regular events). It feels so strange - I don't think I've had a zero weekend for months. Rest will do some good, I'm sure.

Though, knowing myself, I'll probably end up coding some sorely missed JSPWiki stuff regardless of the weather; sitting in a dark room and becoming generally obsessed with finally releasing 2.2 :-)

IE Weekend

IE Weekend 04/19/2004 05:50 AM

I didn't do anything except work this weekend on an IE toolbar for a client.  Much of the time was spent on pushing pixels around to try this look and that effect.  Still, it's not state of art GUI because Win32 alphablending functions are not supported on all the platforms.  I won't be doing much animation either.  Just no time and no room.

Thankfully, the visuals are mostly done and I can move on to messing with IE's COM objects and events.  Lots of joy there (eyeroll).  I would rather design new technologies and lead special teams on hot projects but being a consultant means having to do what clients ask for.  I sure hope rest of you had a better weekend than me.

Weekend fun

Weekend fun 07/31/2004 07:10 PM
Been having a stag party. Not mine, though, contrary to some rumors. Pretty much traditional stuff, except that a) I have not slept since Friday (39 hours up straight I think - I opted for quality time with Outi over sleep, I think I'm going for my record here), and 2) the weather has been tossing some surprises our way. Suffice to say that we have been very wet.

Sleep now.

ArtBots this weekend in NYC 09/15/2004 11:36 AM
David Pescovitz: It's time again for the annual ArtBots Robot Talent Show in New York City, September 17, 18, and 19. Orchestrated by Dorkbot founder Douglas Repetto, Mark Tribe of Rhizome.org, and Hunter College film/media professor Mary Flanagan , the free ArtBots show will feature 20 artists and groups from seven countries (including Leonel Moura's ink pen-wielding ArtSBot, left).
artsbot_web"The show celebrates the strange and wonderful collision of shifty artists, disgraced engineers, high/low/no tech hackers, rogue scientists, beauty school dropouts, backyard pyros, and industrial espionage that has come to define the emerging field of robotic art. Participants include robots that sketch, carve, float, wiggle, hum, ring, grow, wander, and sing, as well a number of works the form and function of which are not yet well understood"

In Nevada for the Weekend... 09/03/2004 04:34 PM
I'm heading out shortly to go fly in Nevada for the long weekend. The Reno Soaring Forecast is good today, but weekend conditions aren't so great. We'll see how it works out. If it's as good as when I was there in late May, I'll be happy. I flew there in early August too, but it was a tough flight. If you're in the U.S., enjoy the long weekend!...

Totally 80s Weekend

Totally 80s Weekend 04/09/2004 04:00 PM
I'm a child of the 80s and I take great pride in it. I've always scored above average on the various "80s purity test" sites. As a result, I have a particular fondness for the popular music of the 80s--especially the one-hit wonders that seemed to make up a fair amount of the Billboard charts. One of the few local radio stations that I can tolerate (there are exactly four) has been playing only 80s music this weekend, calling it...
