FortuneCity launches online photo album
service
06/29/2004 03:20 PM

FortuneCity has launched their new photo album service appropriately named “MyPhotoAlbum”. A premium service being offered to FortuneCity users, MyPhotoAlbum allows users to easily share photos with friends and family. While being offered as a free service to thousands, it seems very similar to Yahoo Photos offered for free through the Yahoo search engine portal. Unlike Yahoo Photos however, the first 10,000 registered users will be entered in a raffle for a new digital camera, gift certificates plus tons of other goodies. Since they are giving away free stuff, I entered just a few minutes ago. With any luck, I will be one of the lucky few that will be coming away with a little more than a cool place to store and share my pictures. To be blunt, I want that digital camera. After all, the price is right. ;o)

Tweaked photo album template

Tweaked photo album template 06/22/2005 02:45 AM

My recent design refresh is already bearing fruit around these parts. Behold the new photo album template, which you can see in the Ireland photos, some recent Paris photos, photos from the High Line, etc. The album pages are the first non-white background pages to make it onto kottke.org in quite awhile, which was part of the reason for the design refresh. I tried the photos on white, but I felt they looked better on a darker background, so I went with that. The photos are also larger than they previously were, up from 600 pixels wide to 720 pixels. The file sizes are also quite large (sorry!)...BetterHTM LExport doesn't do the best job in compressing jpgs while preserving image quality. Photoshop's "Save for Web" does a much better job, but that would be a lot more time consuming for me. The search for the perfect solution goes on...

But my favorite part of the albums are the navigation. If you mouseover the right half of the photo, you get an arrow overlaid on the photo that suggests that you can click to move to the next photo (which, of course, you can). Then you can click on the left side of the photo to go back. If you're using Safari or Firefox or anything but IE really, the arrow images are tranparent png files that blend in with the photo in the background. Fun!

Up next: the photo page needs some help.

iPhoto to Typepad

iPhoto to Typepad 05/25/2004 01:18 PM

PhotoToTypePad/ a> has been released for public beta. I've been testing it for the past couple weeks and Jonathon has incorporated pretty much every feature request and comment I made. It works perfectly for me, I typically create a new gallery, toss some photos in it, rename the titles on the images, then just export to Typepad as a new gallery.

About the only downside I've found so far is the resolution limits at Typepad, which seem to force images whatever max width and height is in your settings (typically 500-640px). Also, I have no idea how much the final version of PhotoToTypepad will cost, hopefully it'll be $5-10.

First Look: iPhoto 5

First Look: iPhoto 5 02/01/2005 09:55 PM
At times, previous releases of Apple's digital photo management program iPhoto came across as catch-up efforts -- catching up to the features found in third party applications that came before it; catching up to the incredible pace that people were shooting and storing digital pictures; and catching up to the potential of being mature Mac OS X applications that aren't hobbled by the halting performance and feature compromises that have been the hallmark of Apple's 1.0 applications of late. In many ways, iPhoto 5 feels like it's finally caught up. Some elements are organized a bit differently than before, but in a way that suggests the designers took a closer look at how people are actually using it.
