06/01/2004 07:33 AMwashingtonpost.com - Compared with the tower-case computers that squat
under desks in millions of homes and offices, the tidy black box I
have set up at home is a midget of a machine. Not only does this
desktop actually fit on top of a desk, at roughly 7 1/4 inches tall by
7 7/8 inches wide by 12 inches long, it takes up no more room than
many shoeboxes.

Plazes and wallop
Plazes and wallop
09/24/2004 07:59 AM
Yes. Yet another social networking site... I decided to play with
this one for awhile before blogging it to make sure it was
significantly different. I think it is. Plazes takes your IP address and
tries to figure out where you are. If you are in a new "plaze" you can
register it by entering the address, uploading pictures, making
comments. You can see who is online and where they are. You can see
people by how far away they are from you. I imagine that once it gets
going, most common hang outs will have lots of comments and pictures
and you will be able to find people in your vicinity to hook up with.
It's a bit like a laptop version of dodgeball. I'm "Joi"
on Plazes.
And in other YASNS news, I finally got my wallop (Microsoft Research's SNS)
invitation. I'm "Joi" there as well.

11/18/2003 09:05 PMNetGear introduced an AP designed for small or medium businesses that
can deliver 108Mbps throughput: NetGear uses the Atheros chip that
Glenn and I reported on for PC World at the end of last week. Broadcom
claims the Atheros chip causes extreme performance degradation in
nearby Wi-Fi networks. I tried hard to speak to a NetGear spokesperson
for the PC World article but they weren't able to dig anyone up for
me. It's somewhat amusing that the NetGear folks sent us the press
release about a new 108Mbps product with no reference to our repeated
conversations last week regarding the PC World article....

NetGear Adds MIMO
NetGear Adds MIMO
01/05/2005 11:17 AM MIMO is cropping up all over: NetGear is the latest to announce a
MIMO (multiple-in, multiple-out) product. They're partnering with
Video54. Linksys has apparently chosen Airgo. Samsung and Athena
announced single-chip silicon yesterday. The near-term problem with
MIMO isn't with the technology itself, but rather the non-standard
higher speed modes. No one is claiming interference, but these modes
won't be certified by The Wi-Fi Alliance or any other group. That
means interoperability, even among devices made by manufacturers using
the same silicon isn't assured. The worst part, in my estimation, is
that this generation of MIMO technology isn't what the final 802.11n
specification will look like. So purchasing MIMO today except for
specific applications in which you need substantially higher
throughput and range from a single device over interoperable,
certified 802.11g means you're buying a dead-on device. 802.11n might
achieve speeds of several hundred megabytes per second, and there's is
practically a total certainty that the final 802.11n won't be just a
firmware upgrade, but rather a difference in both hardware and silicon
compared to today's MIMO devices....

NetGear 802.11g Router for $37; D-Link
802.11b for $17.50
04/26/2004 02:02 AMNetGear WGR614 802.11g Wireless Router is $37 after discount and $20
mail-in rebate: We don't like to highlight deals unless they're quite
remarkable. If you've been looking to upgrade to 802.11g and swear
that you'll send the rebate in, you can buy NetGear's home-oriented
gateway for $37 net. If you use Amazon.com's slow shipping in the
U.S., there's no fee for dispatching it to you. NetGear is pushing its
faster line of "108" Mbps gear, and this rebate probably reflects a
desire to move out plain (but compatible) 802.11g devices. You can
also get a bargain on a D-Link 802.11b access point, as Amazon is
selling the DI-514 Wireless 802.11b Cable/DSL Router for about $17.50
after a $30 mail-in rebate....

Netgear Balks on WPA Certification for
Some Gear
Netgear Balks on WPA Certification for
Some Gear
03/08/2004 11:15 PMJust after the Wi-Fi Alliance touted how many companies have received
certification for the WPA security specification, some vendors are
suggesting they may not seek certification for some products: Going
forward, the Wi-Fi Alliance requires WPA for any product to be
certified. Netgear said that while it plans to certify ts products
that target business users, the company is not sure if it will submit
its consumer devices for certification because consumers are happy
with the more basic security mechanisms. This story points to Belkin
and SMC as other vendors that haven't certified their gear. But Belkin
says that its products support WPA but just haven't been certified
yet. Netgear is the only company this story cites as balking on
certifying some of its gear to meet WPA requirements. The Wi-Fi
Alliance bragged in February that 175 products had been certified for
WPA since September 2003. While it would be a concern if a bunch of
vendors were holding out on WPA, Netgear alone doesn't prove that such
a trend is happening. With all the buzz around the lack of security in
Wi-Fi, I would think that most vendors will want to offer as much
security as possible to reassure nervous potential users....

Sony
launched a noninfringing music downloading service,
entering a growing market still dominated by Apple's iTunes and
including a revised Napster .
Connect is based on a downloadable client ,
offers more than five hundred thousand songs, and offers
now-traditional pricing: ninety-nine cents per song, with a
subscription option. Additionally, Connect is appealing to
indepedent labels for more content. As with iTunes, a digital
rights management ( DRM

MagicGate DRM , restricts sharing of downloaded music files.
Connect's file format, ATRAC 3 , is
not compatible with the popular iPod portable music player.

PCs and Consumer Electronics Devices
01/08/2004 07:36 PMToday at the 2004 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES),
Microsoft Corp. announced Windows® Media Connect, technology designed
to enable hardware manufacturers to easily develop devices such as
Digital Media Receivers (DMRs), which have rich functionality for
playing digital media files stored on personal computers over home
networks. A broad range of industry leaders have announced their
support of this upcoming technology, including leading PC OEMs and
consumer electronics device manufacturers including Arcadyan
Technology Corp., Creative Labs, Dell Inc., Mediabolic Inc., PRISMIQ
Inc., Rockford Corp., Roku, Simple Devices Inc. and Toshiba. Leading
content service providers such as LAUNCH Music on Yahoo!, MusicNow
(formerly FullAudio), and Napster also endorsed Windows Media Connect
for its ability to extend the reach of their content and services to a
new range of consumer devices. Available in 2004, Windows Media
Connect technology will overcome two critical hurdles faced by
networked media devices today: compatibility between proprietary
devices and ease of access to content stored on the PC.

ODBTP, connect to Windows databases from
any platform
ODBTP, connect to Windows databases from
any platform
02/10/2004 02:46 AMODBTP version 1.1 has been released is available at
http://odbtp.sourceforge.net
Many new functions and enhancements have been added to the odbtp
extension. The changes make it the best PHP solutiion for connecting
to
MSSQL, Access, FoxPro and other Win32 ODBC accessible databases from
any
platform.
Its native connection pool eliminates the need for persistent
connections.
All of the functions from the mssql extension are optionally
supported.
This means that existing PHP scripts that use the mssql extension
would not
have to modified to use ODBTP. The odbtp/mssql hybrid extension's
performance and capabilities exceed both the FreeTDS (UNIX / Linux)
and
DB-Library (Win32) versions of the mssql extension. ODBTP uses
Microsoft's ODBC driver for SQL Server, which is superior to FreeTDS
and
DB-Library when connecting to SQL Server 2000 databases. And, unlike
the
mssql extension, the odbtp/mssql extensinn's behaviour is exactly the
same
on all platforms.
While the functions from the odbc extension are not supported, the
odbtp
extension provides better support for ODBC. Most of the odbc
extension's
limitations are caused by its use of ODBC 2 instead of ODBC 3, which
is
used by ODBTP. The odbtp extension is also considerably faster.
