Who'dve thunk it? Yeah, the OS X 10.4.1 upgrade broke emacs. Or, rather, to put the blame in the right place, the 'clever' tricks that emacs plays to get itself going break with depressing regularity when anything inside the OS shifts around. (Part of the build process actually core-dumps a running emacs and then fixes up the core file to be an executable, which is clever but somewhat fragile on some OSes, including OS X) It's a pity I can't stand the vi-alikes. This has gotten kinda old....

AT&T Says AT&T Wireless Broke Their

AT&T Says AT&T Wireless Broke Their
Brand
08/06/2004 06:45 PM
It never really made sense when AT&T spun out AT&T Wireless that they let the mobile company keep the name. It was clearly very confusing to customers who still think they're the same company and it was a clear risk to AT&T's brand -- as well as their ability to offer their own wireless service at another point in the future. While it was clear that AT&T was just trying to cash in on the hype around wireless, the fact that they didn't realize that wireless had to be a part of their future was a bit scary. Of course, among the many things that did happen was that AT&T Wireless faltered and did, indeed, harm the overall AT&T brand name. So, while they're in the process of (maybe) selling out to Cingular, and AT&T wants the name back, many are questioning whether that's a good idea. AT&T Wireless has such a weak reputation right now that starting a new mobile phone service under that brand may be an uphill battle. AT&T is now suggesting that AT&T Wireless broke their agreement by screwing up the brand and being so poor at customer service. Right now, honestly, this looks more like a negotiating ploy concerning the return of the name, because if the Cingular deal does go through, then it shouldn't much matter any more if the old AT&T Wireless can't use the name any more.

The Video Game That Broke Apart China

The Video Game That Broke Apart China 05/28/2004 03:20 PM
Who said video games can't change the world? That seems to be the fear of the Chinese government, who has banned the video game "Hearts of Iron" for (they claim) "distorting history and damaging China's sovereignty and territorial integrity." To be honest, I don't know enough about the video game in question or the specific complaints concerning Chinese history to understand what their specific problems are (and the article is somewhat vague), but, honestly, who could possibly feel threatened that the events in a historical video game could damage a nation's sovereignty? If one little video game can damage both the sovereignty and territorial integrity of a nation, you have to wonder how strong those things are in the first place.

You know I am a very vocal proponent of Fair Use, but because organizations like the MPAA and RIAA have their lawyers hiding in alleyways waiting to slap and injunction on every citizen of this country that does not use the media we buy from stores exactly how they tell us to. I am at the point were I just will not support those industries that stifle fair use.

But it is nice to hear that even the corporate executives are banging their heads against the wall when it comes to trying to stay in compliance with that ugly four letter abbreviation known as the DMCA.

Regal Beagle Fell and Broke His Crown?

Regal Beagle Fell and Broke His Crown? 12/25/2003 10:19 AM
It looks like it's two down and two to go. ESA's rover called Beagle 2 was scheduled to land Christmas morning, but so far the Beagle hasn't phoned home. There could be a multitude of reasons why communications have not been established. It could be just that the Beagle 2 has to recharge its batteries on the first day or it won't last the night. At least we know that the Ma rs Express Orbitor seems to be OK. ESA scientists haven't given't up hope yet on Beagle 2, but it already seems like Mars has claimed another victim (we lost Japan's rover earlier this month). With all of these failed Mars craft, should we really send humans to Mars?

broke DVD

Cory's PopSci column: How Hollywood
broke DVD
12/29/2004 04:49 AM
Cory Doctorow: I've begun writing a regular column for Popular Science magazine, about technology and policy. The first one's just hit the stands, called "Go Ask Hollywood: Why can't you back up your DVDs? Because entertainment execs don't want you to."
They set up a cartel in 1995, now called the DVD Copy Control Association (DVD-CCA), to dole out these licenses. Anyone making players without one is breaking the law. A Fox Studios executive told me, "It's a polite marketplace." Sure, if polite means stagnant.

Think of all the things you can do with a track from a CD now that you couldn't do 10 years ago: rip it to your laptop, turn it into a ring tone, send it to your friends, burn a mix. Many of these capabilities are illegal, and the recording industry has tried to stop them all, but they're out there, challenging the old rules and feeling their place in the market. Innovators have tried to enable the same flexibility for the DVD. Last year 321 Studios released software that let you back up prerecorded DVDs, but the MPAA sued it into bankruptcy before a court could rule on whether or not the product was legal.

Just last month, this magazine gave a Best of What's New award to a $27,000 movie jukebox from Kaleidescape, praising the maker's efforts to appease Hollywood by locking down content on the device so it can't be shared. Kaleidescape thinks the product is within the boundaries of its DVD-CCA license, but my Deep Throat on the cartel says the group disagrees and is currently deciding how the company will be punished. Penalties range from a stern warning to fines to lawsuits. (When I called the DVD-CCA for an official line, I got this reply: "I've been asked to tell you we have no comment." "Who asked you to tell me that?" "I can't tell you.")
