The Mother of All Monitors

The Mother of All Monitors 05/21/2004 05:21 PM

If a 23 inch diagonal flat panel monitor just isn't big enough for you, how about strapping four of them together for a panoramic, Grand Canyon-like view?

With its ultra-widescreen format, phenomenal image quality, stunning aluminum construction and spectacular high-resolutions, the new Grand Canyon Displays are the ultimate solution for any creative professional, medical, military, engineering, modeling, high-end audio/video editing, TV Broadcast applications, and graphics-intensive computing needs.

You too can have the Cinerama on your desktop for a mere $18,000. Oh, and don't forget the three additional video cards you'll need to drive it, which of course requires that you've got a machine with expansion slots to spare.

This monitor array is only one of the many slightly quirky products that can be found at the Lieberman Go-L website (is that pronounced "go-el", or "gol" as in "golly"?) It's interesting to poke around on the website; many high-end computing devices and peripherals, priced higher than even Apple's wares. All on a website that bears a striking resemblance to Apple's own (I wonder if Apple Legal has seen that site yet.)

And Now ... Wireless PC Monitors 03/20/2003 01:05 PM
They provide freedom from the desktop in the home or business office, but are wireless PC monitors worth their own, albeit lighter, weight? Some industry analysts argue that their higher price and limited functionality, plus the size dilemma -- they seem either too big or too small -- will inhibit the popularity of wireless monitors among consumers.

The 120GB, 160GB, and 300GB USB 2.0 and FireWire drives will be available in July in Japan and will also work with Windows, if that's your OS of choice. In addition, software is included that will allow up to 8 hard disks to be recognized by the OS as a single virtual drive.

S3Pro_frontal_400-tm.jpg imageLooks like Fujifilm Germany may have accidentally leaked information about the company's upcoming product line, including news of the Fujifilm S3Pro DSLR [pictured], a 12.1-megapixel follow up to the FinePix S2 Pro. There's also information about some new printers and some "new techologies," mostly stuff about the new "Image Intelligence" image processing software, as well as Fuji's "Picture the Future" roadmap for the upcoming year.

They'll likely pull the information from the website - it was dated for the 28th - but LivingRoom grabbed the press releases and is mirroring them now.

So What If Windows Code Has Been Leaked?

So What If Windows Code Has Been Leaked? 02/12/2004 10:22 PM
If you've been reading the various techie sites this afternoon, you've surely seen the rumors that source code from Windows NT and Windows 2000 have leaked onto the internet. Am I the only one who don't think this is that big of a deal? My only surprise is that it didn't happen sooner. As for the direct impact, if true, I imagine it would be small. People are still going to buy Windows. There already are illegal copies on the market, and the company is doing just fine. However, the indirect impact, could be a big deal. Ed Felten points out that, if anything, this has all the downsides of open source software, without the upsides. That is, anyone with bad intent can hunt through the code for vulnerabilities, but they no longer have the large community ready to fix up such vulnerabilities as soon as they're discovered.

IBM on leaked memo: Nothing to see here.

It looked like a great story opportunity to me. There it was, right at the bottom of the leaked IBM internal memo reported on by Mike Magee in The Inquirer on Wednesday which seemed to call for an internal migration of desktops at IBM to Linux: the name and location of an IBMer leading something called an "Open Desktop Project Office." I immediately fired off an email to my IBM PR contact asking for an interview with the project leader. But sometimes the story is that there is no story -- or at least no answer.

New Tivo leaked image

New Tivo leaked image 03/13/2003 10:22 AM

Whoa! I've been looking forward to the new features coming to Tivo soon, and this image provides the first possible look into what it might mean. If it's using full rendezvous support, where photos and music are streamed over a home network from an OS X machine, I'll totally be using this.

There are a variety of products that let you stream music from a computer to a stereo system, but cost a couple hundred dollars. It'll be interesting to see how Tivo continues along an Apple-like path of making the DVR into a media hub.
