Face transplant

Face transplant 06/02/2004 12:10 PM
Researchers at the University of Louisville are seeking permission from a bioethics panel to perform the first-ever face transplant. According to a CNN article, "the operation could offer new hope for those who suffer severe burns, cancer or gunshot wounds. The surgery will attach facial tissue and blood vessels from a cadaver to a new patient." New Scientist broke the news last week, reporting that "the team has been using the faces of bodies donated for medical research to practise the groundbreaking operation and the results suggest that a transplanted face will not be recognisable as either the donor or the recipient - in effect creating a third face." As a result, the University of Louisville was swamped with inquiries, resulting in the release of an FAQ on the status of the face transplant program. Apparently, they're not seeking volunteers quite yet. Lin k

Maybe teenage pregnancy is a good thing

Maybe teenage pregnancy is a good thing 07/18/2004 06:41 PM

Now that I'm 40 years old most of my friends are in their riper years.  The women who are trying to have children in their late 30s and early 40s are going through torture.  Hormones, needles, in-vitro fertilization, miscarriages, etc.  Maybe teenage pregnancy isn't such a bad idea after all.  I wonder if in pre-industrial societies it wasn't the case that the grandparents did most of the child-rearing that required judgement and experience.  The teenage girl did the child-bearing but was still living surrounded by extended family so that her 30-35-year-old mom and mother-in-law could provide adult guidance for the baby.  Perhaps we believe that teenage pregnancy is bad only because our family structures have been broken up.

Heroin and teenage pregnancy not
considered harmful?
12/17/2004 06:36 PM
Imagine an average guy with an average job (tire salesman, cubicle-dwelling Java programmer, whatever) with two teenage kids.  The father is upset because his son is using heroin.  Now that the movie Ray is out the son can reply "if I stayed off the smack I might be able to get a job like yours dad but I'd rather be like Ray Charles."  The 17-year-old daughter is pregnant with her second child, which also earns her some verbal abuse from dad.  In the 1970s she would have to suffer this abuse but today when Buddhism is recognized as the provably optimal religion for human felicity she can say "sorry that you're upset dad; I was 'in the moment' when this baby was conceived."
