Hardening an httpd for the rapture

Hardening an httpd for the rapture 05/23/2004 04:35 PM
RaptureReady is a site devoted to getting ready for the end-times: this is from the FAQ:
How do you plan to maintain this site after the rapture?

I have no master plan for maintaining Rapture Ready all the way through the seven-year tribulation. After the big event takes place, I expect RR to last several months. After all, the internet was designed to survive a nuclear war. It should be able to survive the great catching up of all believers.

Newer, Smaller Flash Cards: C-Flash

Newer, Smaller Flash Cards: C-Flash 03/14/2005 06:03 PM

c_flash_dime_bit.jpgPretec Electronics Corporation, apparently unaware that more than eight competing formats already exist in this market, has developed a new flash memory card called the C-Flash. Smaller than a dime, Pretec seems to be gambling on the "hope your customers lose your product and don't learn from their mistakes" business model. Cards with capacities up to 1GB will be available by June, and they're sampling them in mobile phones, which is just about the only place I'd want to see one. Honestly, though, there comes a point (perhaps when you require magnification equipment) when it's just too small. A note to these companies with the perpetual smaller-is-better mentalities: Just because I might one day be able to carry all of my media collection as well as the Library of Congress on a card the size of an eyelash doesn't mean I'll want to, dig?

While on the topic of Flash Memory formats, now seems like a good time to mention LIVEdigitally's Flash Card roundup, wherein they break down the Flash Jungle into small, manageable pieces.

A Flash in the Pan 06/24/2005 07:07 PM

Cringely’s latest column is a collection of items - including Adobe’s recent purchase of Macromedia - but the one I found the most interesting was his description of using IPdrum, Mobile Skype Cable, and two cel phone handsets to make calls from his cel phone for free: “…One phone stays at your PC as the interconnect with Skype. I’m hoping the cable also charges the phone, but that, again, isn’t made clear. In the simplest…

Flash apparently still 99% bad

Flash apparently still 99% bad 03/13/2003 10:22 AM

Due to the inconsistent rendering on chimera camino and safari betas (not that I have a copy or anything *cough* just saying if I did), and the general slowness/crashability in mac/moz, I dropped the flash map that was once here. Oh well, now readers won't see that I'll be in Boston tomorrow for the first time in my life, enjoying a quick snow shower before SXSW (for no reason, here's a Tenacious D bootleg of their Boston medley of songs).

AJAX in Flash

AJAX in Flash 03/30/2005 09:01 PM

As I pointed out in my AJAX post, I think difficulties of writing AJAX make it a poor web application platform, particularly since there are easier alternatives.

Flash, for example, is a better platform for some applications than AJAX because it offers similar capabilities (i.e. XMLHttpRequest in DHTML) and comparable, if not better, level of availability along with much better graphics capability.  Flash tool developers such as Lazlo and Xamlon makes it easy to develop interactive web application.  Just take a look at this Google Maps like demo built over a weekend using Xamlon's upcoming tool.

Note that AJAX in Flash is inappropriate for web applications that manipulate DHTML DOM extensively and has a number of issues that makes it prohibitively expensive for uses beyond demos and small tightly-focused applications.  For example, you can't built PhotoShop with it without abandoning usability.

Beyond Flash, .NET looms with superior functionalities and flexibilities.  The only thing it lacks is the availability in several sense.

Fun rubegoldberg Flash toy

Fun rubegoldberg Flash toy 02/19/2004 12:46 PM
Jed sez, "Cute Flash toy in which you try to determine the order in which to drag various items into the middle. Each time you drag an item, the items you've already placed change ("level up") and interact with each other. The goal is to drag all the items in the right sequence to advance them all to their maximum levels. (The maximum score is 20,000.) There are quite a few possible sequences that do this, as well as some sequences that don't reach the maximum but do produce fun effects." Link (Thanks, Jed!)

Flash against Bush

Flash against Bush 12/02/2003 01:46 AM
In general I hate Flash. Its primary use on the web seems to be advertising and stupid corporate home pages with letters rotating around the screen then centering and getting larger. One of the many reasons to move to Firebird as my primary browser was that Firebird has an easy way to disable Flash with the Flash Click to View extension. However, after seeing the work of Erich Blumrich, I can see the promise of Flash. Erich has created a site called Bushflash.com, and he has spent the last year creating small movies about what "President" Bush is doing to this country. Some of them are great. One of the most recent, Mission Accomplished, is quite moving. Recommended....

I’ve been skeptical of rumors about flash-memory iPods ever since they surfaced. Not because I think it’s flat-out unlikely that Apple would use flash memory for an iPod, but rather because none of the rumors even attempt to address the key issue: What is the intended appeal of these supposed flash-based iPods?
