Today, Microsoft Corp. and European mobile operators O2 and TeliaSonera announced plans to deliver real-time location services designed to enable businesses to significantly improve the way they locate, track and manage their mobile assets and mobile work force. The real-time location services are built around Microsoft® MapPoint® Location Server (MLS) and enable developers, independent software vendors (ISVs) and system integrators to create and deploy location-aware business applications for their customers by combining the real-time location data from the O2 and TeliaSonera networks with the rich mapping and location capabilities from the Microsoft MapPoint Web Service.

Reuters - The use of a mobile phone to pinpoint a caller's location and nearby businesses was a hot concept when the tech bubble peaked in 2000, but only now with better phones and software does it stand to succeed, companies say. Mobile operators are selling much-improved services that help users locate friends or get directions to the nearest train station, but they have to fight off consumers' bad memories from 2000 and 2001, when they offered illegible maps on tiny black-and-white screens.

Future Intel Mobile Chips to Add
Location-Based Services

Future Intel Mobile Chips to Add
Location-Based Services
06/03/2004 01:35 PM

Though it's impossible to consider without thinking of the inevitable exploits (from Big Brotherish agencies and rowdy script kiddies alike), Intel has said they are developing support within their mobile processor line to allow computers to be aware of their physical location at all times. Although nothing is set in stone yet, Intel is working with others (Microsoft, for example) to add features that would integrate simple things like, say, selection of which printer to use based on proximity into future laptops and mobile devices. Sounds okay, but also the sort of thing that will probably hit all at once as mobile phones are already gaining GPS abilities and Bluetooth short range communication -- soon all of our devices will know where you are and will be happy to tattle to each other where you're hiding, whether you like it or not.

Microsoft Patent of the Week: Method and
system for determining the location of a
mobile computer
12/30/2003 02:40 AM
"A mobile computer establishes a wireless communication session with a wireless access point of a computer network. The location of each wireless access point is known and obtainable either from a database on the network or from the access points themselves. The strengths of wireless signals passing between the mobile computer and multiple wireless access points of the network, including the access point with which the mobile computer has established the session are measured at multiple time intervals. The measurements may be taken at the mobile computer itself or at the wireless access points. The measured strength values are then weighted according to such factors as whether the mobile computer has already established a communication session with the access point from which the sample was taken, and how old the sample is. For each location, the weighted strength values obtained for access points in that location are summed. The location having the highest sum is deemed to be the location of the mobile computer. "

Location Based Services Becoming A
Reality

Location Based Services Becoming A
Reality
04/12/2004 03:27 PM
Now that more and more cars are coming with built in navigation systems, they may no longer be necessary. Lots of companies have been working on building navigation systems for mobile phones, and this review of such a system from Televigation on a Nextel phone suggests that they may be ready for primetime - especially considering the price differential between a $2,000 in-dash system and a $6/month system on your phone. While the in-dash system includes a bigger screen, and potentially more features, the fact that the mobile phone can be used anywhere (such as a rental car) and that all the heavy lifting occurs on a server (where the data is more likely to be up-to-date) may suggest that in-dash navigation systems don't have much of a future. What's more likely, of course, is that via Bluetooth, or some similar technology, such applications on a mobile phone will be connected to the in-dash display (and the vehicle's speakers) to make the overall navigation experience adjust to the situation. As the article suggests, this is only the beginning of location-based services in mobile phones, but by piggy-backing on a service that people understand already, it will make it easier to gain more widespread adoption. After that, additional value added features will start to appear.

Are Mobile Phones Disconnecting Us From
Geographic Location?

Are Mobile Phones Disconnecting Us From
Geographic Location?
11/18/2003 05:51 AM
It's happened to most of us, I'm sure. You're traveling somewhere, and you receive a phone call on your mobile phone, and you explain to the person that you're not in your hometown, but 3,000 miles away. An architecture critic is now complaining that the real problem with mobile phone use in public isn't that it bugs other people, but that it r emoves our sense of place and removes us from connecting with the location we're actually in at the moment. He's particularly upset that people walking around talking on their mobile phones aren't "experiencing" the urban landscape around them (no surprise that this comes from an architecture critic, whose very job is to notice the urban landscape around him). Instead, he complains that we're barely connected to our physical location, and quick to jump to the virtual location of our mobile phones. Of course, even if he's right, I wonder if that's such a terrible thing. No one is being forced to ignore their surroundings - and if the mobile phone opens up new or different landscapes around them (real or virtual) all it's doing is adding more options. Nagios Plugins 1.4 is released

Nagios Plugins 1.4 is released 02/05/2005 09:55 PM
The Nagios Plugins team is proud to announce that Nagios Plugins 1.4 is released. Nagios (http://nagios.org) is the leading open source monitoring system, created by Ethan Galstad. But for Nagios to monitor effectively, it requires the Nagios Plugins - we provide all the intelligence to work out exactly what is the status of your server or network so that you will know the availability and performance of your services before anyone else. In addition to all the standard server checks, like load, swap and disk, the plugins also checks webservers, databases (Oracle, Mysql, Postgres), DNS, mail servers, Netware and Citrix amongst many others. This release includes major enhancements. With the growth of internet enabled devices, the IPv4 addressing range will be used up soon. Jeremy T Bouse has integrated IPv6 support into our networking utilities, so you can now monitor your next generation network. Karl DeBisschop has incorporated GNU df into our disk checks, so we are leveraging the great work done by the GNU coreutils team. Karl has also added internationalisation support to most of our plugins. French and German translations, provided by Benoit Mortier and Michael Wirtgen, are delivered as standard now and the framework is available for more languages in future. Most plugins now provide performance data for graphing by external applications, like PerfParse (http://www.perfparse.org), so you can see how well your services are working. The team has done a great job in fixing bugs and incorporating lots of requests from our users. This includes efforts from Stanley Hopcroft and Subhendu Ghosh, as well as our newest recruits, Matthew Kent and Harper Mann. And thanks must go to our community who have actively provided lots of patches and bug reports, as well as new plugins, of which check_icmp and check_dhcp are now included by default. Download release 1.4 from http://sourceforge.net/projects/nagiosplug/ and let us know how well it works for you.

Screenshot Nagios (formerly Netsaint) is a daemon written in C that is designed to monitor networked hosts and services. It has the ability to notify contacts (via email, pager or other methods) when problems arise and are resolved. Host and service checks are performed by external "plugins", making it easy to write custom checks in your language of choice. Several CGIs are included in order to allow you to view the current and historical status via a Web browser, and a WAP interface is also provided to allow you to acknowlege problems and disable notifications from an internet-ready cellphone.
Changes:
Fixes were made to macro processing, the sample config files, the init script, and documentation. Several segfaults were fixed.
