A grim and fascinating irony.

A grim and fascinating irony. 06/28/2004 11:01 PM

Legal abortion tips the voter balance from Democrat to Republican. That's Larry Eastland's theory. Abortion has caused missing Democrats--and missing liberals. For advocates so fundamentally committed to changing the face of conservative America, liberals have been remarkably blind to the fact that every day the abortions they advocate dramatically decrease their power to do so.

RSS Winterfest

"RSS Winterfest is happenin' today and tomorrow and lots of good feeds are being tossed around and captured, of course, via RSS Resources Blog with a feed of its own." [Lockergnome's RSS Resource]

My aggregator: "Can't subscribe to the channel. The most likely cure is to check the URL in a web browser and see if you can get it to read the feed. The following message probably won't help you figure out what went wrong, but we include it here because it might. "Poorly formed XML text, we were expecting a tag. (At character #359.)" "

Sigh.

Gentoo - Now with More Irony

Gentoo - Now with More Irony 06/17/2005 03:45 PM

Daniel Robbins, the founder of my beloved Gentoo Linux, bowed out of the Gentoo community last year, setting up a non-profit organization to responsibly manage Gentoo and all of the intellectual property that surrounds it. He, along with others, created a very popular Linux distribution that provides unique benefits over the other offerings that are available. Unfortunately, open-source alone wasn't paying the bills, and Daniel had to find other work.

Mr. Robbins began his new job late last month. With Microsoft:

Gentoo founder and former Gentoo Chief Architect Daniel Robbins began a new position at Microsoft on 23 May 2005. According to drobbins: "I'm helping Microsoft to understand Open Source and community-based projects." While in the midst of hastily packing to move to Redmond, [Robbins] nonetheless managed to find the time to finalize the transfer of Gentoo's intellectual property (essentially copyrights on ebuilds and other software as well as soon-to-be trademarked Gentoo logos) to the not-for-profit Gentoo Foundation, Inc.

Best of luck to him, but it strikes me that without Gentoo, I might not have gotten rid of most of the Microsoft products that I owned. I just hope that "helping Microsoft understand open source" doesn't mean "unwittingly helping Microsoft understand how to get rid of the 'open source problem'".

An irony to start the week

An irony to start the week 07/19/2004 09:53 AM
Eric Eldred of NH parked his Internet Bookmobile in the parking lot at Walden Pond (an irony in itself when you think about it) and started giving out free copies of Thoreau's Walden. He was told to leave or face arrest. Jonathan Zittrain of Da Berkman is supplying legal advise. And, yes, this is the same Eldred who asked the Supreme Court to get Sonny Bono spinning in his grave. Damn troublemaker! (I noticed the article first because of the picture of Eldred wearing his Creative Commons t-shirt, the very one I happen to have on today. Too cosmic! Oh,...

Leading the charge to alter the state constitution to restrict marriage in Massachusetts to one man and one woman is none other than the Governor, Mitt Romney. Mitt's a Mormon (one of the many splinter sects of christianity). You remember the Mormons, right? They're the group that triggered the passage of the original federal (and many state) marriage laws in the first place because of that whole polygamy thing... This could just be ~150 years of payback, I suppose. (I'm not sure that getting the support of gay groups in the 1800s would've done much for their cause)...

Concerning Naked Lunch: Part 2 - Nausea
and Irony
06/05/2005 10:54 PM
This is the second in a series of essays about the book Naked Lunch, designed to introduce the book properly to new readers. Generally, people hear about the life of William Burroughs before they read any of his work. The goal of these essays is to point out the more important aspects of the work, rather than the man. This essay will deal with the use of irony and satire in Burroughs' work, and the way he uses them to highlight the hypocrisy of his time.

Gaming Hacks, comprehensive, fascinating
and eclectic

Gaming Hacks, comprehensive, fascinating
and eclectic
12/31/2004 08:23 AM
Cory Doctorow: I just finished reading Simon Carless's Gaming Hacks, one of the latest O'Reilly Hacks books, and I can't remember when I've had more engrossing fun with a technical book.

Like all the hacks books, Gaming Hacks is arranged around 100 "hacks" -- tricks you can use to get more from gaming. They proceed from the simple to the hellishly complex, so there's something here for everyone.

That's even more true than is usual in the Hacks series, though, because of Carless's incredible, comprehensive, eclectic view of the kinds of hacks that might interest a gamer. Here are some of my favorites:

  • How to hack an old Atari 2600 controller: rehabilitate your old paddles without WD40, then splice them into a modern PC (also: how to download, play and write "homebrew" games for the 2600 and other boat-anchor platforms that are produced by console aficionados who enjoy the challenge of programming for 8-bit, minimal-RAM game environments)
  • Roll your own "machinima" -- movies made by recording the action taking place in a game environment, then dubbing in studio-recorded voices
  • Learn to read enough Japanese to play grey-market games imported from Japan
  • Create your own scripts for automating repetitive "grinding" tasks in massively multiplayer games
  • Etiquette for joining adventuring parties in MMOs
  • Detect and foil cheaters in networked first-person shooter games
  • Build a killer home theatre audio setup to maximize your game platform's 3D sound
  • Build a portable device out of an old console, like the NES
  • Overclock your console
This gives you a flavor for the book's subject-matter, but it doesn't convey wonderful prose style: Carless writes like a great, fetishistic geek, like the Car Talk guys or the folks on The Screensavers, like someone who's really, really enthusiastic about his subject matter and wants to wise you up to all the truly awesome wonders awaiting you.

Combine that with a stupendous introduction by sf-writer-turned-game-writer Marc Laidlaw, who wrote the Half-Life series for Valve, and a slew of highly knowledgeable co-authors who contributed various tips, and you've got the perfect mix of informative, enjoyable and fascinating. This book is staying on my shelf. Link
