Microsoft launches beta of digital music
download service
09/01/2004 06:57 PM
Xeni Jardin: MSN Music launched today. From a CBS Marketwatch report:
Microsoft on Wednesday unveiled details of a new service for downloading digital music, placing it squarely in competition with Apple's rival iTunes music service. Redmond, Wash.-based Microsoft will launch a preview version of its new MSN Music service tomorrow that will allow users to legally download songs mostly for 99 cents each. The service will also make entire albums available, the majority of which will cost $9.99, the company said. Microsoft's push into the arena for downloadable music trails Apple's hugely successful iPod digital music player and its own iTunes music service. Apple also charges 99 cents for each song downloaded through iTunes.

Motorola is sponsoring the show, and they've provided some late-model camera phones for each of the 30 participating artists (including Megan Mullally of TV's "Will and Grace," Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban, "Weird" Al Yankovic, and a number of renowned photographers and filmmakers).

The invited artists' images will debut at the gallery show in July, and images submitted by the public are available for viewing right now.

DoCoMo Waits A Month To Admit Their
Athens Network Is Just For Show

DoCoMo Waits A Month To Admit Their
Athens Network Is Just For Show
08/17/2004 03:23 PM
Japanese wireless carrier NTT DoCoMo got a bunch of press coverage a month ago for announcing the somewhat innovative plan to set up a temporary extension of their 3G FOMA mobile phone network in Athens. Basically, it was pitched as a way that anyone with a FOMA phone could use the phone at the Olympics as if they were back in Japan. No roaming rates, no dealing with different technologies. Just use the network as if you were back in Japan. Now, however, they're (very) quietly admitting that the service is for demo purposes only -- and not for commercial use at all. In other words, the original announcement they made was wrong... or, everyone in the press misinterpreted it. Either way, there's simply no reason for them to have waited a full month (and until the Olympics were underway) to admit that this network, which generated so much press coverage for them, was "just for show." Update: The original press release on this offering makes it pretty clear that this network was supposed to be for everyone, and not just for "demo" purposes. So, "correcting" the story at this point is just silly. The original announcement was clear. Either they lied originally, or the network wasn't working, so they suddenly closed it to real users. Either way, they should be more upfront. Thanks to Carlo for the original story and the press release.

TiVo Wins Nod for Users to Share Digital

TiVo Wins Nod for Users to Share Digital
Show
08/04/2004 06:33 PM
TiVo Inc., maker of popular digital television recording devices, on Wednesday received approval for technology that would permit users to send copies of digital broadcast shows over the Internet to a limited number of friends.

The Federal Communications Commission voted to certify digital protections on TiVoToGo, which is not yet available but would enable a user to record and send a digital broadcast television show to up to nine others who have been registered on that person's service and has been given a key to see it. The approval came despite concerns by the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) and the National Football League about the risks of unfettered distribution of copyrighted shows and airing regional games outside of their market.

"Each of these technologies has been exhaustively reviewed to ensure contention protection systems prevent the mass indiscriminate redistribution of digital television programming," said FCC Commissioner Jonathan Adelstein. The FCC last year adopted rules to limit distribution of digital, over-the-air television programs over the Internet in an effort to prevent mass illegal copying and sharing, a problem plaguing the music industry.
