Copyfight
What Can't I Do Today? (Donna Wentworth)

A Slashdotter, on Endangered Gizmos and the threat to harmless "me2me " uses:

At this point, I've accepted that there are things I do that may someday be considered a crime. ...:
  • Record TV shows from my DirecTV reciever that I pay a monthly subscription fee for into my computer using a Hauppauge PVR250 card for archival purposes (to show friends and family when they come over)
  • Rip all CDs that I buy to the infinitely more convenient Ogg Vorbis format so that I can listen to my music anywhere
  • Stream any audio or video from my house to wherever I happen to be using a VPN connection and broadbad. This means I can listen to my music collection, watch my DVDs or even DirecTV as long as I have an internet connection
  • Build custom digital media devices that don't have the limitations that commercial products do

...It's a wonder it's not illegal to use a hammer, nails, screwdriver, drywall, plaster and screws to build or modify your house any way you want.
Basically, the notion of "owning a song" when you buy it in some format is going to be over if Hollywood has any say. In the old days, if you had an album, you could tape it and listen to it in your car or anywhere you wanted to. You basically "owned the song." Now you own the song on your Mac/iPod. Or own the song on Microsoft... or own the DVD in Region 1... If you've purchased thousands of tracks on Apple Music Store and decide you're going to stop using iTunes and iPod, you're shit out of luck. Or if you have a thousand DVDs and you move from the US to Japan. Yes, there are workarounds, but they will try to make more and more laws to prohibit people from building workarounds.

So my question is... Does this INCREASE or DECREASE the likelihood that I'm going to want to build a massive music or movie collection?

Do You Want Some TNT today?

Do You Want Some TNT today? 08/02/2004 02:37 AM
Imagine this guy, who discovered that the airport security folks have mistakenly planted some TNT in his luggage, is going to a U.S. destination, and if the customs and/or security staff at the U.S. airport has discovered the TNT, what is going to happen? He is going to go through hell, that's what it is going to happen. He will be lucky if he can see his family again for the next few months.
And that's why I am going back on the promise I've made to myself on bringing my daughter to DisneyWorld once she is able to appreciate Mickey Mouse. Hong Kong DisneyLand, here I come... :-)

With Gmail gaining praises and attentiion, and Yahoo buying Oddpost, an Outlook-clone-on-the-web, Dave Winer is asking the question we are all dying to get the answer: Who is Microsoft going to buy?
Is Dave trying to say that Microsoft does not have the capability to develop a Gmail clone by themselves? :-)

Today Being Tomorrow 09/10/2004 12:04 AM
I'm a bit of a reluctant tourist. I enjoy the work I do, the music I'm lucky enough to perform and create and I live in San Francisco, which is an endlessly entertaining city. Nonetheless, I find myself here in Hong Kong International Airport en route to Vietnam and, it's to be hoped, that my narrower points of experience will be broadened. My first bit of adjustment. Me, My Mobile and I

"A new generation of mobile users are becoming so emotionally attached to their phones that they cannot live without them.

This is one of the key findings of a study into how people use their mobile phones entitled Me, My Mobile and I.

The annual study from research firm Teleconomy reveals that 10 to 14-year-olds - dubbed M-Agers - are rapidly becoming the most sophisticated users of phones.

Even toddlers are able to tell the difference between incoming phone calls and text messages said Professor Michael Hulme, chairman of Teleconomy....

'They are growing up ready to take on these services,' said Prof Hulme....

Phones are rapidly replacing address books, diaries, watches and alarm clocks as people turn increasingly to their handsets to help manage their lives." [BBC News, via textuall y.org]

An admittedly small study group, but the findings are well supported elsewhere. The two killer statistics, though - and the ones to which libraries need to pay particular attention - are that "32% see phone as tool rather than intimate object" and "85% of children had personalised phones."

It's not like these things are going away, you know.

Tomorrowland Today

Tomorrowland Today 07/08/2004 05:24 PM
colcov1Disney's 1950s television show Tomorrowland, a stunning example of the future's history, is now out on DVD. This morning, National Public Radio aired a nice history of the program by commentator Andrew Chaikin. The story goes that famed Disney artist Ward Kimball pitched Tomorrowland to Walt after reading a series of articles about space exploration in Collier's Magazine. Real rocket scientists like Wernher Von Braun were then brought in to Disney as consultants on the show. The first episode, Man In Space, aired March 9, 1955. From the NPR piece:
"Man In Space got rave reviews. President Dwight Eisenhower personally requested a copy of the show to screen for military brass at the Pentagon to help them understand plans to launch a satellite."

Down and Out relicensed today

Down and Out relicensed today 02/12/2004 06:05 PM

Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom, Cory Doctorow's first novel released a little over a year ago, has just been relicensed under an Attribution-Noncommercial-ShareAlike license. Previously the book did not allow derivative works and any "lost chapters" or comic versions were unauthorized. With this change in place, the door is wide open to people writing prequels, sequels, and side stories, you can make a movie, cartoon, or graphic novel, you can write songs for it, rewrite it in haiku, and/or turn it all into one giant flowchart, as long as your new Down and Out-inspired work isn't released in a commercial context or sold.

Let the re-creativity begin!

The San Francisco Chronical has an observance on the 10th anniversary of the death of Randy Shilts. His second book, And the Band Played On opened my eyes to the AIDS epidemic, as I am sure it did to a lot of straight people. I was amazed to see him pilloried in the gay press as being a traitor to his "kind." My understanding is that this disfavor arose from his assertion that aspects of the hard-won sexual freedom enjoyed by many gay men were also killing them. Anyone want to weigh in on this?
