Stolen Car Turns Up Twenty Years Later

Stolen Car Turns Up Twenty Years Later
On The Internet
12/12/2003 05:44 AM
Some things you just don't expect. If your car was stolen in 1983, you probably have given up hope by now that you'll ever see it again. But, you should never doubt the power of the internet. A man who had his 1968 Mercury Cougar stolen in 1983 is getting the car back, thanks to the internet. Someone posted a classified ad trying to sell the car, and while investigating the background of the car, someone figured out that the car had been stolen and informed the rightful owner - suggesting he buy the car. However, the true owner was still in possession of all the paperwork saying that he's the rightful owner of the car, and therefore shouldn't have to pay to recover his own car. Meanwhile, the guy who had it has been arrested for "possession of stolen property" - though, he says the car was a gift from his father. Over the course of twenty years, I imagine the car could have shifted hands a few times.

The San Francisco Chronical has an observance on the 10th anniversary of the death of Randy Shilts. His second book, And the Band Played On opened my eyes to the AIDS epidemic, as I am sure it did to a lot of straight people. I was amazed to see him pilloried in the gay press as being a traitor to his "kind." My understanding is that this disfavor arose from his assertion that aspects of the hard-won sexual freedom enjoyed by many gay men were also killing them. Anyone want to weigh in on this?

OKC: Ten years ago today

OKC: Ten years ago today 04/19/2005 08:35 AM
9:02 AM CST 4/19 1995. Ten years ago today. Do you remember where you were when the federal building in Oklahoma City was bombed? It was then the biggest act of mass murder in U.S. history. Shocking to a people una ccustomed to domestic terrorism. What followed was an outpouring of volunteer support and grief for the victims, a manhunt for suspects presumed to be Arabic, and calls for a 'war against terrorism'. Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols were eventually arrested for, and convicted of the crime, but since McVeigh was put to death in 2001, a steady stream of new evidence has called into question both the government's handling of the investigation and the official version of events. Survivors and victims' family members gather today to remembe r and to reaffirm demands for truth.

The Birth of GNU, 20 Years Ago Today 01/07/2004 03:16 PM
GNU LogoRichard Stallman resigned from MIT 20 years ago today to launch the GNU Project. That was the free software effort that ultimately spawned the operating system known as Linux, building on a tradition that gave the world a host of other software, some of which is at the heart of the Internet and other things we take for granted today.

Actually, it was in 1960, four years before the Beatles showed up on Ed Sullivan, that Doug McIlroy published Macro instruction extensions of compiler languages, which appears to be a seminal paper in the literature of metaprogramming. I mention this because a number of folks have responded to last week's item, Programs that write programs, pointing out that Lisp programmers have been there, done that:
"your note about code generation, and the referenced discussions - bits of which i'd already read elsewhere, left me with a really eerie feeling, that i might not be living in the same dimension with you folks. you see, there's a practice of code generation which extends back decades: lisp. code generations is a lisp programmer's bread and butter."
"In the lisp world, they call these macros. The idea is pretty widely known, though not too many languages implement them. Perl 6, and by extension the Parrot interpreter, will include macros, and they will thus be available to any language that gets implemented on top of Parrot (which currently includes Ruby, Python, (maybe) PHP, and, of course, Perl)."

In battles over operating system superiority, emotions run high. Capabilities are assembled like armies and run out on discussion boards to face the flames. So let me say this now: your operating system is probably better than mine. Most modern operating systems are better than FreeDOS when considered by any objective criteria. FreeDOS doesn't multitask, doesn't surf the Internet easily, isn't great for multimedia productions, and doesn't even do Windows. But I love it anyway.

Software That Lasts For Years And Years

Software That Lasts For Years And Years 07/14/2004 06:51 PM
We were just talking about the rise of quick and dirty programs as a way for individuals (not necessarily programmers) to solve specific needs. However, as was mentioned at the time, that would be a different "tier" of software programming, and there would still be a need for programmers to do higher level "big" projects. In the past, we've also discussed the problem of data extinction, where old computer systems and formats die out, leaving content and applications virtually useless on ancient media. This is a big problem for many applications, and Dan Bricklin is now suggesting that people need to start designing "Societal Infrastructure Software" that can last for centuries, not just a few years. The idea is that this type of software shouldn't have to worry about new computers or new formats or new anything... but will be able to just keep on working. In order to build this, though, Bricklin believes it will require embracing open source programming, though not necessarily the way people view open source programming today. It's a fascinating concept, but getting people to think long-term is so difficult these days, that you wonder if such ideas will actually catch on.

The Well turns 20

The Well turns 20 03/30/2005 06:11 PM
Mark Frauenfelder: The Whole Earth 'Lectronic Link will turn 20 in April. I became a member in 1989 and though I haven't posted anything there in years, the discussions I had there and the friends I made have had a profound influence on my life.
Incredibly, twenty years of living online have sped by since the Whole Earth 'Lectronic Link opened to members on April 1, 1985. Twenty years is a milestone in the life of any group or town. A full generation of WELLbeings have changed and been changed by extraordinary experiences together here. Serious celebration is in order through the month of April! WELL members past, present and future are invited to celebrate this milestone with us online and off.

Twenty years ago this week, during the year of Big Brother, Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak introduced the Apple Macintosh. Although the seminal advert sticks in everyone's minds, it's easy to forget just how revolutionary that little beige, boxy, Mac was. At the time, Windows version 1 was still a year away, and overlapping windows and icons on the PC would not appear for another three years, in the form of Windows 2--later to be renamed Windows 286. And of course all those early versions of Windows ran on top of the DOS command-line operating system.
