How to bypass voicemail hell and get a

How to bypass voicemail hell and get a
live operator
10/31/2003 09:37 PM

List of ways to get to a live operator for various banks, airlines, credit card companies, and support centers.

If you want to reach a live voice at Gateway, hit zero twice, but be prepared to wait on Hold for a little while.

For Hewlett-Packard say "agent" when you're first prompted to speak.

We found no magic bullet to bypass Dell, Apple, or IBM's automated voice menus.

T he latest BOFH, or Bastard Operator From Hell. If you read The Register you're familiar with him... It's the story of an abusive IT guy basically doing whatever he wants to users and getting away with it. It's been going on for about 10 years, all of which is archi ved, so if that one doesn't tease your fancy, maybe some of those will. If you're not familiar with basic IT stuff some of it may be foreign to you, but once I started reading I couldn't stop. Try a couple years back, 2002 is a good vintage. >clickety<

IM and Voicemail

IM and Voicemail 01/17/2004 11:18 PM

Asterisk Voicemail that reacts to my AIM status: Interesting article on how to use your AIM status to control your voicemail.

It occured to me that my computer already "knows" whether I'm in the office or not because my iChat status (aka my AOL Instant Messenger/AIM status, as they use the same IM network) is automatically set to "Away" if I'm idle, and "Available" when I return. As such, shouldn't my voicemail be able to reflect this — i.e. not bother ringing my phone if I'm not in the office?

Voicemail, podcasting, cellphones,
cameras, etc

Voicemail, podcasting, cellphones,
cameras, etc
12/27/2004 04:59 AM

Adam has ideas about integrating voicemail and podcasting, and I've been having similar ideas about digital cameras and cellphones.

Here's a scenario. I'm hiking on a popular trail outside Sedona, taking pictures, of course. Since this trail is so popular, I pass about a dozen families, couples, solos, families with kids, families with dogs. Okay, as I pass them I can take their picture if they want me to. My camera connects through Bluetooth to their cellphone and transfers the pictures I take. Not sure about all the permissions, it's probably another panel on the Setup screen on my camera.

BTW, Nikon has a much more complex user interface than Apple's and it works a lot better. Same with my Nokia cellphone. All these devices are comparable. And the wifi capabilities these devices are all going to get soon will enable Bluetooth-like features, except without any limit on range. You can synch up with devices anywhere as long as they are accessible over the Internet.

Hey while we're at it I'd like my phone and camera to be bluetoothing the URL of my weblog to anyone nearby who cares.

Post-circuit-switched voicemail

Post-circuit-switched voicemail 11/01/2003 12:57 PM
Nice rant on how "circuit-switched" thinking is holding back advancement in telephony:
Assume a phone call requires an (extremely generous) 3Kb per second of audio. One hour of stored audio is about 10Mb of data. This is a pretty modest amount by the standards of modern flash memeory. Your mobile phone is perfectly capable of storing all your voicemail. The network is perfectly capable of transmitting the data in a sensible amount of time. Unlike email, most voicemail is listened to -- the amount of wasted download is small...

You should be able to listen to voicemails on your plane journey home. You should be able to reply to them on a store-and-forward basis, even when you're not connected to the network. And most of all, you shouldn't have to use a clunky telephony user interface to navigate a message queue. And you shouldn't be restricted to one device for accessing your own data.

SkypeIn and Skype Voicemail Beta

SkypeIn and Skype Voicemail Beta 04/18/2005 08:24 AM
Skype, the Global Internet Telephony Company, announced the public beta launch of SkypeIn and Skype Voicemail, two new premium services available in the latest download versions of Skype software for Linux, MAC OS X, Pocket PC and Windows platforms. SkypeIn provides an affordable, flexible alternative to costly mobile phone roaming charges with SkypeIn personal numbers. SkypeIn customers can receive inbound calls to their Skype client from ordinary fixed telephones or mobile phones while they travel worldwide, providing seamless interconnectivity without having to pay costly roaming charges. Skype Voicemail enables users to manage incoming voicemail messages, making their Skype usage more ubiquitous.

“Skype is setting new standards for modern communications by expanding premium services that extend Skype portability, mobility and ubiquity across a variety of platforms, including the traditional phone network,” said Niklas Zennström, Skype CEO and co-founder. “SkypeIn and Skype Voicemail enhance the basic free Skype and now allows friends, family and colleagues not connected to the Internet an inexpensive and convenient way to contact members of our global user base. With Skype’s new premium offerings, travellers will now be able to save thousands of dollars on roaming charges.”

The new premium offerings coincide with another major milestone for Skype: the 100 millionth download of the software as recorded today. Skype has now enabled more than 7 billion high-quality minutes of talk time for Skype users worldwide, further establishing Skype as the feature-rich communications choice of cost- and quality-conscious users.
