EyeTV 500
06/28/2004 04:28 PM

Elgato Systems on Monday introduced the EyeTV 500, a new digital video recording (DVR) system for North American Mac users that lets users record both digital standard definition television signals and ATSC-based high definition signals broadcast over the air in North America. Based on the EyeTV 400, the new 500 model uses FireWire and lets users record television programs straight to their hard disk drives, where the shows can later be watched or burned to VideoCD or DVD using Roxio's Toast Titanium software. EyeTV includes software to interface with TitanTV.com's online program guide and edit out unwanted content like commercials.

EyeTV maker Elgato Systems on Friday introduced two new Mac OS X-based digital video recorders (DVRs) mainly aimed at the European market -- the EyeTV 300 and 400. Elgato's original EyeTV transfers analog video to the Macintosh's hard drive through USB. These new EyeTV devices instead use FireWire, and support a European digital television standard called Digital Video Broadcast, or DVB. DVB is available in the UK, as well as parts of Spain, Sweden, Finland, Norway, the Netherlands, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Portugal and Australia.

Elgato's EyeTV 500 06/29/2004 08:26 PM
For all those people still getting TV from an antenna, Elgato's EyeTV 500 is a Mac-based HDTV PVR. And if you have cable, your cable company is legally required to give you a cable box with a FireWire port, which you can then use to record HDTV. Hey, maybe Elgato should unbundle their PVR software so that people can use it with cable boxes.

Gadget of the week: EyeTV

Gadget of the week: EyeTV 01/03/2004 11:50 AM
While still in its infancy, elgato’s EyeTV has seen more updates in a year-and-a-half than most products see in their entire lifespan. With a constant stream of substantial releases to its companion software, EyeTV has turned from a quirky luxury item into a flawless, must-have Mac gadget; with each upgrade, the hardware’s intrinsic value has increasingly at a near-exponential pace, eclipsing most everything in its path and forever raising the bar for Digital Video Recorders. El Gato has released EyeT V 1.5, an update of its video recording software that unifies support for all of the company's digital video recorders, some of which have shipped with different versions of the earlier application. In addition, EyeTV 1.5 brings in support for TitanTV's remote programming feature, which allows you to schedule recordings from any computer with Internet access and for Apple's Safari Web browser. The upgrade is a free download and requires Mac OS X v10.2.8 (v10.3.4 recommended) and a G3 with a built-in USB port if you're using EyeTV USB, or a G4 with a 500MHz processor if you're using any of El Gato's other devices.

IBM not compatible with SP2

IBM not compatible with SP2 08/10/2004 10:57 AM
It has finally come to completion. The Microsoft Windows XP SP2 was released to manufacturers on Friday. But IBM has already warned its employees not to download the Windows XP SP2, when it becomes available, through an article headlined "To patch - or not to patch" which was posted on its corporate intranet. With close to an estimated 400,000 desktops, IBM is a huge Microsoft customer indeed. The article stated that a large number of IBM's Web applications will need to be tested and some modified to work correctly with SP2. Currently, some high profile, business-critical applications are also known to conflict with SP2. The article went on to say that when the current issues and concerns have been addressed, IBM would deploy a customised version of the Windows XP SP2.
