New iPAQ Pocket PC

New iPAQ Pocket PC 07/27/2004 02:43 AM

I'll be honest I have a iPAQ one that I purchased last year. It was a big waste of money. My laptop is with me about 90% of the time. I play games on it on airplanes and try and figure out how to re-coup my money. Someone needs to come up with a book on how to be productive with a Pocket PC. I am sure their is one out there but I'd hate to waste more money. This is one of the reasons I am hesitant to buy a tablet. I'm afraid it would be a waste of money.

Pardon my gush: iPaq Pocket shows
Microsoft magic touch
12/15/2003 12:57 PM
If you could watch my e-mail pop up on days I gush over something from Microsoft, you'd see it can be (ahem) kind of courageous to say something upbeat about the oft-reviled Raptor of Redmond. You'd be amazed at how many of the e-mails start with or end with furious attacks against the Microsoft applications that don't work on Microsoft operating systems sold by Microsoft partners like Dell, Gateway and the 800-pound gorilla on the retail computer-gear scene, Hewlett-Packard. Today's gush is prompted by a rather unfamiliar and utterly welcome experience when I set out to review a complex HP product, the iPaq h4155 Pocket PC, the latest and maybe the lightest (weight-wise) personal digital assistant on the market.

San Diego on Wireless Cutting Edge

San Diego on Wireless Cutting Edge 01/05/2004 01:40 PM
San Diego is a hub for wireless companies and businesses there tend to be innovators in using wireless technologies: This piece looks at how one real estate agent uses Verizon's high-speed mobile network and how a handful of businesses use Wi-Fi networks. One interesting Wi-Fi application is at One America Plaza in San Diego. The developer of the commercial office building offers Wi-Fi to tenants for free. He charges tenants for wired broadband access which is built in to the building but figures that Wi-Fi is an "amenity" so should be offered without cost, just like elevator service. An already-built Wi-Fi network sounds like a super bonus for any business hunting for new office space....

Hands-on review of Sony Ericsson's new GC82 wireless laptop card, the first which can connect to AT&T Wireless' new high-speed EDGE cellular data network. AT&T Wireless claims that users should be able to get downloads averaging between 100 and 130kbps over an EDGE connection, but reviewer testing the GC82 isn't able to get even close to that. Read...

Exhaustive Review of Sony Ericsson GC82
EDGE PC Card
04/16/2004 01:12 PM
Brian Jepson reviews the Sony Ericsson EDGE card to the nth degree, including configuration advice and photos: This in-depth, multi-page review at Jiwire (our content partner) tells the results of Brian's real-world testing of EDGE service over AT&T Wireless's network in several cities, provides an explanation of how EDGE works (and why performance might vary), and is fully illustrated with screen captures and photos. Brian also provides the information you need to use the card with Mac OS X and Linux, which aren't directly supported by Sony Ericsson. A small download, a few code changes, recompile, and voila! You've got high-speed cell data on unsupported computers. While $80 a month may seem high for a consumer-level price, for business people who need ubiquitous data access, EDGE is really the fastest best option when it works. By January 2005, Verizon Wireless will have its 1xEvDO in potentially dozens of cities, while AT&T Wireless should have debuted UMTS in four or five towns....

Smith Micro Software Inc.'s QuickLink Mobile lets Mac OS X laptop users access the Internet through data-capable cell phones via USB and Bluetooth. The 2.0 version now supports popular PC Card-based Wireless Wide Area Network (WWAN) interfaces; adds support for EDGE, a high-speed data service available through some cellular networks; and also automatically seeks out and identifies Wi-Fi "hotspots" -- it'll also let you know if the nearby Wi-Fi service is one to which you subscribe. Prices range from US$29.95 to $49.95 depending on whether you need a cable or just software; upgrades from 1.x cost $14.95.
