Avail Solutions LLC on Monday introduced its Integrity backup and recovery software solution for Mac OS X. Integrity is designed to support hard disk-based storage, tape drives, autoloading backup systems, and multiple tape libraries -- in fact, any combination of hardware including disk-to-disk-to-tape (D2D2T) systems. Integrity consists of client and server modules that manage backup and restore functions, storage management services and replication and data migration functions. Making its debut at Apple's Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC), Integrity will also be shown at Macworld Expo in Boston in July. Tiger Previewed

Tiger Previewed 06/28/2004 04:31 PM
Steve Jobs has been previewing some of the key features of Tiger at the WWDC in San Francisco. All the new stuff is on the Apple website, but here’s a diluted list :
  • iChat AV — updated to include multi-way AV conferencing (with a funky 3D interface).
  • Safari RSS — an updated version of Safari to allow reading and management of RSS feeds.
  • Dashboard — open & manage Konfabulator-style widgets
  • Spotlight — super-fast global search facility. Search through your contacts, iCal diaries and email as well as files.
  • Automator — create and deploy actions to perform common routines (in a great looking interface too).
  • Xcode 2.0 — updated version of Apple’s IDE (with visual modelling and improved Java support).
  • VoiceOver — the much heralded Spoken Interface. A system-wide feature which makes Tiger the most accessible OS available.
Sounds great, but I may save the cash and put it towards one of those gargantuan 30-inch Studio Displays

20d_frontview-001.jpg image

Okay! Here's that proper announcement from Canon we were expecting about the EOS 20D. The 8-megapixel digital SLR definitely ups the ante in the whole Canon/Nikon game. I can't wait to see some proper reviews.

The EOS 20D wasn't the only Canon announced, though, with the seven-megapixel G6, five-megapixel A95, and three-megapixel A400 all showing up in one form or another, too. There are reviews of almost all of the cameras (except the 20D, of course) out today, and Photography Blog has a nice collection of links that they'll keep adding to throughout the day if you'd like to toss them some links.

Oh, and even thought DPReview has been told not to post sample images of the D20, Canon Japan has three sample shots you can chew on for now. The fruit and ice one made me giggle a little.

iwill_zmaxdl.jpg imageSo I just spent entirely too much time reading about the new iWill ZMAXdp, a small form factor PC that has not one, but two AMD Opteron 64-bit processors inside of it. It's not on sale yet, but Hexus was able to score a pre-release unit for review, and it's absolutely one of the sexiest little machines I've seen in a long time, and I hate it for existing. You see, I had my heart set on picking up a new iMac at some point as new desktop machine, but I bet for something near the same price I could get one of these ZMAXdp cases, a couple of Opterons, and all the other accompanying necessary bits and not only have an ultra-quiet 64-bit machine on my desk, but one hell of a gaming rig, besides.

Trademarking integrity

Trademarking integrity 10/29/2003 12:10 AM
Trademarks are powerful because they visually and clearly identify the companies who own them and their products. When a trademark is used to control the ability of a critic to clearly identify the target of her criticism, trademark is being perverted and is being used to undermine democratic discourse. (more) Dead on. Using intellectual property laws to stifle consumers violates a basic consumer right: the right to publish an opinion about their purchase. I see no reason why consumers discussing corporations should be restricted from referencing them using one of the most prominent public features a corporation can publish, the logo. People on eBay have the right to provide negative feedback, associated with the public aspect of my identity; Consumer Reports has existed for years with the sole purpose of providing consumers with positive and negative feedback about products,...

Zone Labs Integrity 5.0 06/29/2004 08:29 PM
Having a software firewall on a corporate LAN does have some advantages. With the latest version of Integrity from Zone Labs, you can secure computers from threats originating within your network as well as choose what file types should be allowed for transfer from PC to PC. In addition to that, Integrity 5.0 offers up some great new features including expanded support of 802.1x authentication and new support for ICQ’s protocol-level IM protection module. Zone Labs has certainly not lost it’s knack for the basics either. You will still get all of the features that you expect from stateful firewall protection to port stealthing. Zone Labs has done it again by allowing network admins to keep a tight grip on the managed network while allowing some flexibility for the end users.

The Center for Public Integrity is a nonprofit, nonpartisan, tax-exempt organization that conducts investigative research and reporting on public policy issues in the United States and around the world. The Center was founded in 1989 by Charles Lewis following a successful 11-year career in network television news. Through thorough, thoughtful and objective analyses, the Center hopes to serve as an honest broker of information – and to inspire a better-informed citizenry to demand a higher level of accountability from its government and elected leaders. The Center extends its public policy journalism around the world. Created in 1997, the International Consortium of Investigative Journalist network includes 92 leading investigative reporters and editors in 48 countries. The group has collaborated on numerous online and printed reports on corporate crime, arms trafficking, terrorism, U.S. military policy and human rights issues. A Singular Lack of Integrity?

A Singular Lack of Integrity? 03/19/2003 10:24 PM

On the news now, a correspondent reported from the Azores where the pro-war-in-Iraq lobby have been meeting. She said something I found startling. Apparently at several points during the last few months it had looked like the UK/US position would get upwards of nine/ten votes in the Security Council. That was until France declared its intention to use its veto. At this point the other countries saw no advantage in voting to approve a war that couldn't happen anyway - and which might cost them an election. Almost to a man, they changed to a no vote.

I've expressed repeatedly my anxieties with any upcoming war with Iraq - that while it's clear to me that Saddam Hussein is an unpleasant man who should be removed, the route that I believe has to be taken is one of international collaboration. I do not believe that any country or group of countries should be able to act internationally (unless they have directly and individually been provoked) without at least the vaguest assent from the international community. My opinion has been that, should there be failings in the United Nations, then it is the job of the world to change the United Nations, not to disregard it.

But my whole position has relied on the integrity of the people concerned. If countries act in an honourable way, then I have respect for their opinions. And I've argued to defend the assumption that people are acting honourably. I have continually argued for France's right to express its dissent from the opinion of the international community. And I've been hostile to the possibility that France or the United States should try and bargain with, threaten or buy the votes of any other country on the Security Council or across the world.

But where is this integrity, exactly? France has crossed the line a couple of times. The United States and the UK have demonstrated that they're not averse to a little bullying as well. And now we hear that the votes of the rest of the Security Council depend only on what they think will play well with their electorates. Our world is run by monsters and hypocrites and if I could retire from it, I would.

How to use an iPod as a bootable drive

This week’s How to from Engadget is a handy one for the Mac folks out there who want to run multiple operating systems, but not install them to their hard drive, all using an iPod as a bootable FireWire drive. They also cover ways to simply back up your home directory (or anything else to your iPod) which can be handy too, and even used in conjunction with this how-to. Still no word on where Apple's "Home on iPod" is.
