Michael says, "Here's another petition asking Apple to acknowledge a widespread manufacturing defect. This one concerns the problem with Apple's 17-inch Studio Displays that causes the top or bottom half to go dim, and the power light to blink incessantly. There is an ongoing thread on Apple's Discussion Board that currently has 371 replies, with 172 unique user names reporting the problem. It had 378 on Tuesday, but 8 of them, including one of mine, have since been deleted by Apple. I have spoken to Apple's Customer Relations regarding the issue, and they refuse to acknowledge it as a known problem. A flat-rate out-of-warranty repair is $458.95. A new display is $699." Georg Boomgaarden, German Ambassador to Spain, also participated in the festive award ceremony.

The displays use metallic films featuring various shape memory alloys which are produced layer by layer on silicon wafers using thin film technology. Display pixels are generated when the metallic film adjusts its curvature partially, similarly to bimetal snap plates for temperature switches. The movement of the films is then transferred to the touch panel via plastic pins und thus can be detected by the user.

benq_fp231w.jpg imageThe only bad thing I can say about BenQ's new FP231W large-screen LCD monitor is that my video card might not have the polygonal prowess needed to pump out 1,920 by 1,200 pixels worth of videogame. However, if there were one sitting on my desk here -- and I'm cleaning off a little spot, actually, just so it knows that it would be welcome to stay over -- I would take the 23-inch, 16ms flat panel and a favorite game and try. Sure, we might drop some frames here and there, "chug" some of you kids call it, but we'd be trying something new together, which is beautiful, really, and although it might be a little awkward at first, I'm sure we'd both learn to make it work.

23gz_xserve.jpg imageWhat would make Apple announce a upgraded Xserve G5 just a week before MacWorld? Could it be that they're so crammed full of new product announcements that they're actually pushing stuff out early? Wishful thinking, perhaps, and idle besides—this 2.3GHz Dual G5 rackmounted machine is a beaut. Why can't all my machines be rackmounted, huh? If I didn't play videogames, I could ditch these goofy square machines forever.

Slightly more plebian, though, is news that Apple has dropped the price of the Cinema Displays, starting with the 20-inch model for $1,000, up to the 30-inch for three large. (Thanks, Lawrence!)
