Ah, the Sound, but Oh, the Bumps on the
Road to Digital Radio
(washingtonpost.com)
06/28/2004 01:07 PM

washingtonpost.com - Digital radio broadcasts, after years of dreaming and development, are finally arriving on the air. And at first, this technology might not seem terribly enticing: The hardware needed to tune in these new signals is laughably expensive and few stations transmit in digital anyway.

Radio Radio is a Sound Salvation

Radio Radio is a Sound Salvation 04/23/2004 01:30 PM
Two Wi-Fi radio radios are coming, reports The Register: Tony Smith discusses upcoming radios that will act like AM/FM tuners but work over Wi-Fi and the Internet. Both Reciva (startup) and Linksys (part of Cisco) will offer devices that handle radio stations streaming in many formats over the Internet. Linksys's product, which they apparently plan to make on behalf of other companies, will also support Real Networks' subscription-fee-based Rhapsody network....

Harley-Davidson Road Tech Digital Music
Player
08/16/2004 09:49 AM

You know, if you factor in the normal Harley-Davidson markup, the new Road Tech Digital Music Player's $300 price really isn't that bad. Sure, it only has 64MB of memory, and it's on an SD-card, no less, but you can toss that and throw in a gigabyte card, and you're going to be hard pressed to find another MP3 player that is chromed, clips onto your handlebars, and has buttons that are designed to "allow easy operation while wearing gloves." Badass gloves, made from the skin of only the most awesome cows, I'm sure. Cows with tattoos.

Two versions are available for '96 and later model bikes (possibly even non-Harleys. I don't know.)

Digital AM and FM radio

Digital AM and FM radio 03/13/2003 10:20 AM

We've largely ignored digital satellite radio here on Gizmodo. Sure the sound quality was better, but the offerings seem rather lackluster, the monthly fees are too high, and the fact that both XM and Sirius seem teetering on the edge of bankruptcy provides an even greater disincentive to invest in the equipment. But now regular terrestrial AM and FM radio stations are going digital. It'll require new radios, but there won't be subscription fees. The only problem is that the US has adopted a different standard from the rest of the world. Great.

A-6000_large.gif imageAria Digital has a new DAB radio out, this one made specifically for use with PCs or laptops over USB, called the A-6000. It follows Aria's "Global DAB" policy, too, which means that it uses both of the primary DAB bands (Band 111 and L-Band), allowing you to pick up DAB broadcasts pretty much anywhere they are sprayed out. It has both USB and SPDIF outs, and can record to MPEG2, MP3, or WAV, as well as work with the Electronic Programme Guide (like a DAB TiVo) for recording any shows you might miss. It's currently shipping for about £100.

A Broadcast Flag For Digital Radio?

A Broadcast Flag For Digital Radio? 05/24/2004 06:59 PM
The RIAA isn't exactly known for understanding concepts like fair use, or that giving consumers what they want generally helps to grow a market, but now they're just wasting everyone's time. Their latest move is to push for a broadcast flag for digital radio, so that you may no longer be able to record what you hear on the radio. In other words, just as the industry is trying to convince people to switch over to digital radio for the better sound quality, they're also going to be taking away the rights people have enjoyed for ages concerning what they can do with the content they hear.

Glenn Fleishman on digital radio 01/04/2005 06:20 PM
Mark Frauenfelder: Glenn Fleishman sez: "I wrote my own take on a Wired News story about the RIAA's lobbying of the FCC to get broadcast flags embedded in digital radio content. Digital radio is now offered by about 150 AM/FM stations in the U.S. even though only about 10,000 to 35,000 (estimated) high-definition or HD radios that can receive the digital content were sold in 2004. Terrestrial digital AM/FM will grow to at least 2,000 stations by 2007, and millions of receivers by 2008, according to analysts. With HD, AM stations sound like FM (and don't disappear in underpasses) and FM stations sound like CD quality. Reportedly! I haven't heard it yet." Link

radio proposal at the FCC

EFF has just filed its reply comments in the digital radio broadcast flag docket at the FCC. My cow-orker Fred von Lohmann was in rare form with these, savaging the RIAA's goofy ideas about breaking the record button on tomoprrow's digital radios.
The RIAA’s biased and blinkered account of "copyright policy" cannot obscure the fact that copyright law expressly approves of digitalaudio home recording devices (including devices like the DAB receiver/recorder) and their noncommercial use by consumers.8 There isno copyright policy "gap" here for the Commission to fill, even if the Commission had the jurisdiction to do so. Where Congress has legislatedwith specificity, it is not for the Commission to countermand its legislative scheme.

CNet is reporting about the RIAA's appeal yesterday to the FCC to restrict end-users' ability to make home-recordings of music broadcasted over high-quality digital radio. Fortunately, the proposals are not going unopposed, as both consumer groups and electronics industry consortiums are pushing back against the RIAA's move to remove home-taping rights that consumers have had for years.
