A first look at Vector Linux 4.0, SOHO
edition
04/09/2004 04:04 PM
Vector Linux has always interested me because of its purpose and origin: a simplified distribution from a Slackware base. Last month Vector's developers announced the first release candidate for Vector Linux 4.0 SOHO edition. Since, to quote Vector's main page, Slackware Linux has always been "about as user-friendly as a coiled rattlesnake," I was curious to see how Vector Linux addressed these issues for home users while still keeping the Slackware reliability and speed. I'm sorry to report that their efforts have not been especially successful.

ISO my perfect SOHO accounting for Linux

ISO my perfect SOHO accounting for Linux 11/12/2003 01:13 PM
I've been doing a background search for a Linux accounting package for small business the past week or so. The trigger for the search was the recent news of AppGen's apparent demise. It hasn't been so much a problem of finding accounting apps for Linux as it has been finding one I've wanted to use. But I've found one now. It's very nice, it's called QHacc. The only drawback I've found is that it's for home use, not business. My search for a SOHO accounting package will have to continue. This is not a review of QHacc. It's an update on my search-to-date for my perfect SOHO accounting solution for Linux, coupled with an introduction to QHacc.

This concept of "open source" intelligence leads to an insight into blogging, and why it has grown so as a social phenomenon. Intelligence has, for many years, taken advantage of the human instinct for gossip; by collecting information that seems unremarkable at the time, collecting it together, and through massive human and computer effort turning the mass of information into coherent, organized data.

This is one of the smartest moves that iRiver has made in a very long time. No longer will you by default have to use their proprietary application to get media onto the device. This opens the way for the iRiver MP3 players to be used easily with Windows Media Player. I know several Podcasters are jumping for joy.

I was able to sync my Podcast subscriptions very easily with Windows Media player. The following link takes you to the IFP-700 series firmware download page. [iRIVER Firmware Upgrade 700 Series]

03/08/2004 11:18 PM
My older, wiser brother Steve just posted an interesting interview with Jonathan Schwartz at Sun, who discusses his company's plans to embed RSS into just about everything, apparently. Microsoft's Robert Scoble has quite a few bones to pick with Schwartz. Robert makes some good points. But he might be wiser not to brag about Microsoft's intentions to put RSS into a component of the Longhorn operating system, given how long it may be before the ever-receding OS sees the light of day for regular folks who need RSS most of all. But if this is the start of a one-upsmanship festival, in which Microsoft, Sun and Apple (and the Linux folks) race to make RSS a core part of what they do, I'm all for it.

Lot's of people are now on the search for torrent sites after several of the most popular and well publicized sites were shutdown. It is understandable why as the heat had been turned up by the MPAA. I find it sad that they did not stand up and fight though.

It's tough to stare down the end of a gun barrel that has a 100 lawyers behind it ready to litigate you into financial ruin. I am sure at some point we will get a site willing to fight and find out the legal standing of torrent sites.

The FAQ contains a list of alternative sites and information on the closure. [www.silentdragz.net]
