I'd like to thank the Academy... 04/09/2004 03:54 PM

I'd like to thank everyone who voted for plasticbag.org at the Bloggies, where I've accidentally picked up Best British or Irish weblog. I'm particularly surprised given given the quality of the other candidates: Going Underground's Blog, A Teenager Blogs, Greenfairy.com and The Big Smoker.

More importantly, I'm genuinely delighted to report that I somehow won the Best Essay Bloggie as well for (Weblogs and) The Mass Amateurisation of (Nearly) Everything. If anything I think that one is the more important to me because I spent a long-time writing that piece and thinking around it and I think it's one of the best things I've written. I'd love it if more people read it and responded. So thanks again to everyone involved!

The big winner of the night was Boing Boing, who took home the Best American Weblog, Best Group Weblog and Weblog of the Year. I'm kind of surprised - given Cory's alleged nationality - that they didn't win Best Canadian Weblog too! Lifetime achievement rightly went to Heather Champ, whose creative output online has been astonishing for as long as I can remember. Well done!

The March 15 issue of Library Journal is out, and it includes the Movers & Shakers 2003 supplement. I'm honored to say that I received a most fine write-up and am listed as a "Teacher." I like that because both of my parents are educators, so I feel like I'm holding up the family tradition.

In addition, lots of other shifted librarians are highlighted, including Carr ie Bickner, Andr ew Mutch, and Char les W. Bailey, as well as Caro l Gulyas, with whom I have the good fortune to be working on the Illinois reference portal! Congratulations to everyone listed and thanks LJ!

Academy Piracy Case Solved

Academy Piracy Case Solved 01/25/2004 10:32 AM

FBI makes arrest in Oscar screener piracy: Kind of a sad story here. A "friend" of an elderly Academy member convinced him to send him the screeners he got every year. The videos were promptly pirated.

Carmine Caridi admitted in an affidavit released Thursday that he sent every so-called "screener" videotape he's received for the past three years to an acquaintance in the Chicago area, Russell W. Sprague.

Sprague, 51, was arrested at his home in Homewood, Ill., on Thursday after a search of his home turned up hundreds of films, many of which had been converted to DVD format and had the Academy's encryption code erased, along with an array of duplicating equipment, authorities said.

One thing we learned is that the Academy's tracing technology works. They tracked this all back to the source via a digital watermark on the movies which indicated who they had been sent to.

Conceived in 2003 and modeled after West Point, The National Military Academy of Afghanistan began its academic year last week, welcoming its first class of soldiers to pass basic training, after which they'll complete a four-year Academy degree and become commissioned officers. Back in February, a US officer passed on photos of the Academy's opening. "We had kids walk into the Academy with nothing but the clothes they were wearing and open sandals, (no socks). These are good cadets."

British Academy treats film judges as
crooks

British Academy treats film judges as
crooks
08/31/2004 10:09 AM
Cory Doctorow: The British Academy of Film and Television (BAFTA) is treating all judges as criminals this awards season. They are supplying special lockware DVD players that can play back the "secure" DVDs that the Academy is distributing. My guess is that anyone elected to judge a film award has a highly tuned, specialised home-theatre setup and that this will represent a serious goddamned pain in the ass for them:
"We are very pleased to be working with Cinea to give our members the opportunity to receive secure screeners. The British Academy takes the threat of piracy very seriously, and we welcome any solution that can reduce the risk of unauthorized copying." said David Parfitt, Chair of BAFTA's Film Committee.

Variety is reporting that it will cost studios US$25,000 (€20,650) per film, plus a license fee to Cinea, to secure the screener disks with the S-VIEW system. Cinea will pay for the players and encoding themselves, and is in discussion with studios for further uses of the S-VIEW technology to secure the post-production process for film makers. It can be used for the secure distribution of dailies and other works in progress, ensuring that digital copies don't end up being leaked onto the internet. Something that was almost impossible with 35 or 70mm film.

Each sv300 player is individually addressable, allowing distributors to decide exactly who views their content, from large groups of thousands to a single individual.

Nice: if you can't sell DRM to users, you can convince paranoid studio execs to shell out tens of thousands of dollars to buy it and shove it down cinephiles' throats. Link (Thanks, Simon!)
