06/28/2004 11:51 AMToday at the Microsoft® Windows® Embedded Developers' Conference
(DevCon) 2004, Microsoft Corp. announced that Windows CE 5.0 will
offer expanded source licensing, enabling, for the first time, all
licensees to ship products commercially built from their modifications
of the Windows CE 5.0 shared source code. Licensees will maintain
ownership of their derivative code and will not be obligated to share
modifications with Microsoft, partners or competitors. In addition to
expanding the Windows CE Shared Source distribution to more than 2.5
million lines of code, Windows CE 5.0 will also include networking
performance improvements that dramatically increase data processing
speeds, more than 60 production-quality drivers that increase
developer productivity, technology to remotely monitor device
performance, and Direct3D® Mobile to enable high-intensity gaming
applications. Windows CE 5.0 -- previously code-named "Macallan"-- is
scheduled to be released to manufacturing July 9, 2004.

03/29/2005 08:50 PMMicrosoft Corp. will build software for managing identities into
Windows in order to beef up security by giving users more control over
their personal information, the world's largest software maker said on
Tuesday. The ID technology called "info-cards" will give
users more control over their own personal information in order to
shop and access services online, said Michael Stephenson, director in
Microsoft's Windows Server division.
Microsoft is currently working on a new Internet Explorer Web browser
and version of Windows, code-named Longhorn, but Stephenson declined
to say whether "info-cards" would be built into the current
Windows XP version or Longhorn. "We're trying to make the
end-user experience as simple as possible," Stephenson said,
adding that Microsoft's "goal is to make sure that this is as
broadly accessible as possible." The initiative is the latest
effort by the software giant to improve the reliability and security
of its software.

Andrew Lees, corporate vice president for Server and Tools Marketing
at Microsoft Corp., introduced to more than 11,000 customers and

and implement Microsoft's Dynamic Systems Initiative. Lees detailed
the first delivery of that plan, the Common Engineering Criteria for
2005, a set of capabilities that will be available in all Microsoft
Windows Server System servers released after Jan. 1, 2005. Microsoft
also announced additional Windows Server System innovations that,
combined with the Common Engineering Roadmap, reduce the complexity of
IT. Finally, Lees announced the June 1 launch of an expanded and
enhanced product support life-cycle policy. The updated policy will
provide customers with a minimum total of 10 years of mainstream and
extended support for business and developer products.

Embedded
04/14/2005 06:58 PMMicrosoft Thursday offered some early insight into a planned embedded
version of its upcoming Longhorn operating system. Called Longhorn
Embedded, it's intended for use as control software in x86-based
systems that aren't PCs or servers. These include systems such as
retail point-of-sale terminals, thin clients, advanced cable set-top
boxes, and single-board-computers used in everything from ATMs and
vending machines to factory-floor controllers.
Microsoft is expected to provide the first public details of its plans
for Longhorn Embedded to developers in May at its Microsoft Mobility
and Embedded DevCon in Las Vegas.
