Delayed patch ends Microsoft's
patch-free month early

A glitch in Microsoft's Windows Update automated patching service caused a security fix that was released last month to be delivered to computer users on Tuesday, the same day Microsoft proclaimed December would be a patch-free month. The software patch fixes a serious vulnerability in a set of Web site management tools called FrontPage Server Extensions, which are part of Microsoft's Windows 2000, Windows XP and Office XP software, according to Microsoft Security Bulletin MS03-051 released Nov. 11. Exploiting the flaw could allow an attacker to gain control over a user's PC, Microsoft said.

Arguments against Capital Punishment

Arguments against Capital Punishment 07/19/2004 01:08 PM
While reading the news recently, I have found two things that depress me more than any others. They make me doubt my faith in human nature. They are (1) the crimes people commit; and (2) the desire for vengeance of the victims. That (2) depresses me as much as (1) has led to several heated arguments with friends and family. Therefore I should like to set down the major reasons why I believe capital punishment to be a fundamentally Bad Idea. There are the usual arguments. "Capital punishment is the mark of barbarism", "Deterrence doesn't work", "We routinely convict innocent people", etcetera. These are all valid. They are not the arguments that affect me the most. I prefer the (not-so-simple) calculus of the general good. In other words, can we arrive at a punishment that is constructive for the society that administers it, instead of arbitrarily causing more harm? In light of this, I propose the following arguments: Two Wrongs Don't Make a Right Vengeance Is Not Restitution The Paradox of 'Restitution'

Windows XP SP2 Delayed...again

Windows XP SP2 Delayed...again 08/05/2004 03:12 AM
Once again Windows XP SP2 has hit another delay. Although last night the SP2 team were partying at the "release of SP2" it wasn't clear what build was RTM and whether anyone had agreed on RTM. One thing that is for sure at the moment is that SP2 final will make it onto Windows Update/Automatic Update on the 25th August, anything before that (RTW network install etc) has been knocked back.

We'll bring you the latest dates as soon as the SP2 team have recovered :)

European PSP Launch May Be Delayed 02/05/2005 10:17 PM

pspmarch.jpg imageSony has stated that PSP may miss its Europen launch date—again."(Europe) is a tough market because of the language issue," said Hiroshi Kamide, an analyst with KBC Securities. "The U.S. tends to be the easier target because you don't have to put so much effort into it to get a better return."

Kamide added that it might make better sense to take advantage of the current demand in the United States rather than try to rush a European launch.
