My MY My - here we go - who owns what -
and the notion of 'built-in' content

MP3. com Music to Emerge from CNET Limbo.

MP3.com, Michael Robertson’s watershed indie warehouse, rose, crested, and fell. Then the domain and other assets were bought by CNET. Then darkness and confusion reigned upon all the land, causing gnashing of teeth among musicians and rending of garments among their fans. Now, a glimmer of light. One of the most respected indie-music sites, GarageBand.com (not without its own ups and downs, having risen from the dead once already), has licensed some 85 percent of MP3.com’s old music content from its present owners, a consortium of ex-Universal execs called TrusSonic. Confusing? Eh, don’t sweat the details. Keep your eye on GarageBand to see what it does with the word’s biggest collection of medioc— ...I mean, independantly produced music.

CNET Music Service Begins Beta Uploads.

One hour after the report of GarageBand licensing most of the old MP3.com musical stash (click here or scroll down the page to see that post), CNET sent an e-mail through its mailing list announcing the beta launch of music.download.com. Musicians may begin uploading material (music files, bios, pics, etc.) immediately. CNET owns the MP3.com domain and miscellaneous assets. Apparently, CNET has no immediate plan to revive the domain, and it does not own the music files previously hosted at MP3.com.  [The Digital Music Weblog]

More on Yahoo Local

More on Yahoo Local 08/03/2004 02:58 PM

This actually affects my life somewhat - as one of my clients - Tribe.net - is heavily into this. I'm also highly focused on decentralized, social realities and where EXACTLY the rubber hits the road where cyberspace hits meatspace.

So I need to analyze and grok this - by 2PM today.

So here's John Batelle's inside scoop.....

I'm slow to report the news here (the embargo lifted last night at 9 pm) but today Yahoo launched its local search product. I was on an informal "advisory board" for this product, but I have to admit that my focus on the book did not allow me to be very engaged. However I did get to play with it early, and found it pretty damn good.

Chris Sherman of SEW agrees, his write up is here< /a>. He notes the major features, the clean interface, and the elegant "refine" features that let you zero in on lists of search results. He quotes Jeff Weiner on the goal:

"Our mission is to understand intention of user, to help them complete tasks as quickly as possible," said Jeff Weiner, senior vice president, search and marketplace, sharply contrasting Yahoo's approach with Google's mission "to make the world's information universally accessible and useful."

You know what a sucker I am for intent-based media. Net net: I like Yahoo Local, and plan to use it, at least for now.

[John Battelle]

Going local with Yahoo

Going local with Yahoo 08/03/2004 08:54 AM
Yahoo has introduced a new souped-up local directory (what they don't like to think of as yellow pages on steroids) that I think is actually quite useful. If you search for, say, bicycle shops in Boston, it not only lists them, but shows you a map with other services around the shops. It also lets you review the services. And you can search more broadly than just by categories; for example, if your yuppie refrigerator (you ought to be ashamed of yourself, but it's not too late to make up for it) breaks, you can search for "repair Subzero" to...

Yahoo! Local Beta 08/03/2004 12:16 PM
Not to be outdone by all those other beta services on-line, as of this morning you can try the Yahoo! Local Beta. For the longest time, I've used Yahoo! Yellow Pages when I needed to find something in a specific area. But in the last few weeks of playing with the internal beta of Yahoo! Local, I've been pretty happy. In almost all cases it's at least as good as YP, but usually a lot better. The ability to selectively...

Excellent! When I heard about this feature several weeks ago, I knew right away that it'd be really useful. If you want to find movie showtimes in San Jose, just head over to yahoo.com or search.yahoo.com and plug in showtimes san jose. The first results you should see are links for movie theaters as well as times for popular movies. If I still lived in Ohio, I'd have used showtimes toledo. Sadly, showtimes findlay and showtimes bowling green don't work....
