IBM Adopts Open Development Internally: "Following on the success of its Eclipse open-source development platform, IBM has quietly been using a form of open-source development internally to create technology the company will sell commercially.

IBM calls its model Community Source, which it defines as a collaborative, internal, open-source-style environment for developing and testing new technology.

Danny Sabbah, vice president of strategy and technology for the IBM Software Group, in Armonk, N.Y., said IBM is using its Community Source model across 100 projects and 2,000 developers in the company. These projects span the IBM Software Group, Systems Group, Research and Global Services, he said."

Very interesting. I'd like to learn more about that. What parts of the so called open source development process have they built into the Community Source model? I've found that most developers have different definitions of the open source development process (via Ross Gardler).

Top 10 Open Source Tools For E-Activism.

Good article today listing the "Top 10 Open Source Tools for eActivism". Some of these I hadn't even heard of before (like ActionApps, completely new to me).

Open source tools are a natural fit for e-activism, since they are born of the same bootstrap, grassroots mentality as a good e-activist campaign. Plus, they're free :-) Or at least cheap -- and often far better in quality than their commercial counterparts. [Seen on Many-to-Many]

05/25/2004 11:36 AM
Critics of open source software have argued that, from an economic standpoint, "giving the product away" makes no sense. As a new business model, open source has been the victim of many misconceptions and mischaracterizations: that it's the equivalent of communism, that's it's like a virus, and that it's economically dangerous to society, for example. In such a hostile atmosphere, it's not easy to objectively assess a new paradigm that differs greatly from the status quo. However, though a comparable model may not exist in the IT sector, a parallel working model for open source already exists in at least one other field, biomedical research, and this model has been proven to be of great benefit to society.

Online Resume Rules Sound Like Offline
Resume Rules

Online Resume Rules Sound Like Offline
Resume Rules
09/13/2004 02:14 PM
USA Today is claiming that the rules have changed for resumes, now that they're mostly sent via email instead of snail mail. However, when they get into the details, they sound amazingly like the "rules" many of us learned back in the days before you emailed resumes: focus on results from previous jobs (read: throw in lots of useless percentages to make it look like you improved something), use "descriptive or significant terms" (read: make sure you include the BS buzzwords-of-the-moment to make it through that first pass filter), don't send the wrong cover letter to the wrong company (read: don't be completely stupid), and don't apply "above your skill level" (read: don't waste HR's time so much). I remember hearing all of these years ago as well, and they don't seem any different in this "new age of electronic resumes" as the article would have you believe. Then, of course, there's the biggest recommendation for this supposed new age: they suggest you spam as many companies as possible. Again, has there ever been a time when people were told to send out fewer resumes? If anything, it seems like this strategy is the wrong strategy in the digital age where HR folks are so inundated with resumes that some have found that going back to paper resumes is much more effective in getting attention.

Microsoft Wants to Resume Talks With EU

Microsoft Wants to Resume Talks With EU 12/19/2004 03:11 PM
Software giant Microsoft Corp. hopes an impending court ruling on its five-year antitrust battle with the European Union will bring both sides back to the negotiating table, but EU regulators still balk at resuming direct negotiations, officials said Thursday. The European Court of First Instance is expected to decide by Monday whether to stay pending appeal the EU's March order for Microsoft to change its business practices and pay a 497 million euro ($666 million) fine, lawyers said.

Considering that the full appeal could take years, the consequences of a suspension could be huge. If court President Bo Vesterdorf backs the EU, the U.S.-based software giant would be forced to divulge some of its long-cherished trade secrets to competitors and untie the digital Media Player from its Windows platform. Microsoft will be carefully assessing the legal arguments Vesterdorf gives.

Resume Writing Advice

Resume Writing Advice 04/11/2004 10:19 PM

The Rockport Institute has a six-part series on how to write a resume. (hat tip to Angie McKaig for the pointer.)

Their advice is fantastic, and capitalizes on the idea that you should do "active personal marketing" with your resume:

THE NUMBER ONE PURPOSE OF A RESUME

The resume is a tool with one specific purpose: to win an interview. If it does what the fantasy resume did, it works. If it doesn't, it isn't an effective resume. A resume is an advertisement, nothing more, nothing less.

A great resume doesn't just tell them what you have done but makes the same assertion that all good ads do: If you buy this product, you will get these specific, direct benefits. It presents you in the best light. It convinces the employer that you have what it takes to be successful in this new position or career.

It is so pleasing to the eye that the reader is enticed to pick it up and read it. It "whets the appetite," stimulates interest in meeting you and learning more about you. It inspires the prospective employer to pick up the phone and ask you to come in for an interview.

I would recommend this series of articles to anyone looking for a job change or career change.

Part two of the series says that resumes are scanned, not read. I'll agree with that point completely. I generally spend less than 15 seconds with each resume that I receive on the first pass. If nothing in the resume grabs my eye, I throw it away. If something catches my eye, I put it in a pile of resumes to follow up on later.

Parts three and four give a lot of great tips on writing a resume, some of them are especially powerful:

  • To write an effective resume, you have to learn how to write powerful but subtle advertising copy.
  • If you are applying for several different positions, you should adapt your resume to each one.
  • The resume is visually enticing, a work of art.
  • All the basic, expected information is included.
  • A resume should be targeted to your goal, to the ideal next step in your career.
  • Shorter is ususally better.
  • Telephone number that will be answered. (I'd add that your email address better be a good one that won't bounce too.)

Part five covers 'choosing the right job' and is an advertisement for Rockport's services, and part six is a great list of power words that should be used over other passive words that might crop up in your resume.
