Meshcube: Open Source Mesh Network Nodes

Meshcube: Open Source Mesh Network Nodes 06/28/2004 09:55 AM

meshcube_klar_freigestellt.jpg imageI must presume, when looking at the prices for the 'Meshcube,' that "199,90 EUR" really means about €200, not €20,000, because as cool as a tiny, mesh network computer is, I don't think there's any way I'd pay 20 large for one. Mesh networks are like generic WiFi networks, except that as you continue to add nodes -- like the little Meshcubes, for instance -- the network can expand out, without many of the limitations of traditional wireless networks with repeaters. There are other differences, too, but for now we can just enjoy a cute bug computer with no moving parts, a 400MHz MIPS processor, and two WiFi interfaces all crammed into a 7 x 5 x 7cm cube.

The Champaign-Urbana Community Wireless Network (CUWiN) released the fruit of their efforts at the end of the week: The project is an open-source effort to provide mesh networking with no center. The system is self configuring among nodes which need no non-volatile or permanent storage. To set up a CUWiN network, you burn a CD with the 0.5.5 software later this week and use it to boot a computer with a support wireless card. The system finds nearby nodes, creates tables, and establishes itself as part of the network. The software is free and open source. The full press release is after the jump....

Open-Source Mesh Group Releases
Software, Discusses Social Goals
04/28/2004 01:03 PM
Champaign-Urbana Community Wireless Network releases first-generation mesh/cloud software, seeks input and development: I spoke with Sascha Meinrath, one of the folks leading the CUWiN project, about the scope of the project, their goals for outside participation, and his recent trip to Amsterdam to meet with a group designing documentation on wireless networks for developing nations. The CUWiN project wants to allow self-forming, noncentralized, mesh-based Wi-Fi networks using standard, old PCs with no configuration. Slightly more advanced units could be ruggedized boxes using Compact Flash, but the basic unit would be a 486 or later PC with a bootable CD-ROM or bootable floppy that bootstraps a CD-ROM. Once booted, a unit finds other similar units without any other configuration or control and forms a mesh. "We've been developing software now since about 2000, and our idea is to build software that is super user friendly, super easy for someone who doesn't understand the nuances of the technology or community wireless networking to set up their own system," said Meinrath. It's an attempt to enable community networking to spread beyond the folks who are self-starters. To test their current software, they put together a bunch of old Pentium 133-based system with off-the-shelf Wi-Fi gear, burned CD-ROMs, booted the boxes and watched the mesh network form within five minutes. However, the current generation of software "won't scale well: there's no route prioritization, and there's this problem of the hidden node problem," he said. (In a hub-and-spoke network, hidden nodes can see the hub not other spokes and can disrupt other network traffic by improperly sending at times when other nodes are transmitting resulting in interference and back-off behavior that reduces network performance. Mesh avoids some hub and spoke problems, but can effectively move the hidden node problem to any mesh point that has some connected nodes that can hear each other and some that cannot.) CUWiN is design a system to prioritize routes among mesh nodes based on MIT Roofnet, and are looking into the Hazy Sighted Link State (HSLS) routing issue. HSLS uses packet economics: more dropped packets in a given route de-emphasizes it shunting more traffic to more successful routes. (Read more about this in CUWiN's FAQ.) The software release by CUWiN of a CD-ROM image containing bootable node software along with the developer's resource (distributed under a BSD license with plans to move to a GPL license) is part of...

MRTG is the Multi Router Traffic Grapher, a piece of free software released under the GNU General Public License. It was written primarily by Tobias Oetiker and Dave Rand. MRTG produces Web pages that display graphs of bandwidth use on network links on daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly scales. This can be an invaluable tool for diagnosing network problems because it not only indicates the current status of the network but also lets you visually compare this with the history of network utilization.

In addition, the Opera House donated an AP to the town of Los Gatos to provide Internet access to the town plaza located across the street. Firetide caters to challenging deployments that are difficult to wire because Firetide uses 802.11 radios for backhaul. The release doesn't seem to be posted yet but should be here at some point. Strix is another vendor that uses wireless for backhaul. These vendors should be attractive to the cases where wiring is really difficult, like old buildings on college campuses or downtown....

IBM Adopts Open Development Internally: "Following on the success of its Eclipse open-source development platform, IBM has quietly been using a form of open-source development internally to create technology the company will sell commercially.

IBM calls its model Community Source, which it defines as a collaborative, internal, open-source-style environment for developing and testing new technology.

Danny Sabbah, vice president of strategy and technology for the IBM Software Group, in Armonk, N.Y., said IBM is using its Community Source model across 100 projects and 2,000 developers in the company. These projects span the IBM Software Group, Systems Group, Research and Global Services, he said."

Very interesting. I'd like to learn more about that. What parts of the so called open source development process have they built into the Community Source model? I've found that most developers have different definitions of the open source development process (via Ross Gardler).

One frustration too many: time for a rant. When a bug in Mozilla (keyboard focus is on the previously selected window) has remained unfixed for at least 18 to 24 months, when XFree86 mouse interaction with PS/2 or GPM remains hazardous and makes a system unusable and that bug has been fobbed off to the kernel developers and not dealt with for at least two years - when there are more examples like this that make using Open Source software a pain, what do you do?

Are you one of the few people with the time and money and expertise sufficient to delve into the source yourself to fix the problem?

Do we have it "too good" and these niggles are, by comparison to the rest of the world's computer users (Windows), absolute peanuts?

Open source cracks publishing wide open

Open source cracks publishing wide open 06/17/2004 11:24 AM
Once upon a time, publishing was the domain of large corporations. Then came desktop publishing and the tools to produce a book shrank from the cost of an aircraft carrier to the price tag of a PT boat. Now, small publishers on the bleeding edge of technology are fomenting a revolution that may change the publishing market forever. Open source publishing tools, long derided as not being ready for battle, are proving themselves in the trenches of small publishing.
