Iraqi sovereignty, meet Vietnamization
Iraqi sovereignty, meet Vietnamization
06/30/2004 01:32 AMToday's news accounts of the surprise and clandestine handover of
sovereignty in Iraq yesterday -- in particular,
David Sanger's
excellent New York Times analysis, which dispassionately laid out
how tenuous the whole affair was -- left me with a depressing sense of
deja vu. Sanger quoted Defense Secretary Rumsfeld's comparison of the
Iraqi insurgents' attacks with the North Vietnamese Tet Offensive.
Rumsfeld was arguing that the Iraqis, like the North Vietnamese, are
aiming their attacks as much or more at American resolve as at targets
in their homeland.
But the Vietnam comparison that is more apt today is the sorry saga
of "Vietnamization." Cast your mind back to the Nixon administration's
desperate efforts, even as its timbers were beginning to splinter on
the Watergate iceberg, to extricate American troops from their no-win
deployment in Southeast Asia. The "peace with honor" policy involved
handing power over to a hand-picked government friendly to U.S.
interests but unloved by its own people, and replacing American
military forces with native troops, regardless of their
combat-readiness or willingness to fight.
Does this movie sound familiar? The echoes of "Vietnamization" in
the Bush administration's Iraq strategy are eerie -- and terrifying,
because Vietnamization was an utter and total failure, one that
everyone involved pretty much knew was inevitable, but that proceeded
because it was the only fig leaf handy to cover an embarrassing
strategic defeat for the United States. As in Vietnam, so in Iraq: The
U.S. military can "win the battle" (as we "won" the Tet offensive),
but if the leaders in Washington haven't identified clear, realistic
goals, there is no way to win the war. (Hint: just as "terror" is not
an enemy you can target, "freedom" is not a government you can
support.)
The Vietnam adventure was cursed because the South Vietnamese
government it sought to preserve was corrupt and unpopular. It
didn't matter that the North Vietnamese were Communist despots if
enough people in Vietnam perceived them to be nationalists taking on
the imperialist U.S. Similarly, in Iraq, it won't matter that the
insurgents are actually murderous Baathist thugs or suicidal Islamic
fanatics if enough Iraqis think that they're nationalists taking on
the imperialist U.S.
Handing power over to a weak and compromised interim government
seems less a promising strategy than an election-year desperation
move. With Americans still dying every day in Iraq, we have no choice
-- Bush supporters and opponents alike -- but to hope and pray that it
works. Unfortunately, it seems much more likely that Bush and Rumsfeld
and Cheney (the latter two of whom had ringside Beltway seats for
Vietnamization the first time around) have marched themselves straight
into Santayana
hell, where they are doomed to repeat the United States' worst
mistakes.

Early morning RSS rants

RSS clearly is about to go through another growth spurt. And as
with each other time its eclipsed its former self there are people who
seem to want to take control, redefine it in some bizarre and
undignified way. If people would first study the history of RSS and
see how much it has suffered from this kind of greed, perhaps they'd
back off and just be grateful that there's new technology that makes
the Internet much more useful, and leave it at that. (They usually say
their ignorance is their strength, btw.)
The name RSS is every bit as good as any other name you can
come up with, and it has the advantage that it's the name everyone
uses. Read a marketing text book. It doesn't matter what it's called,
rather that it means something in lots of brains. Trying to make a new
name stick will only make the whole thing weaker.
For example, imagine falling in love with someone. "You're the
perfect person for me," you say. "But your name doesn't communicate
who you are. Let's have a contest to come up with a new name for you."
Now, how clueless would that be?
One more thing. There's a myth going around that there is a way
to do publish-subscribe without polling. Not true. At some level,
every apparently non-polling technology is built on, you guessed it,
polling. It's all just an illusion. Computers don't really do
interrupts. At some level it's polling.
Now, should an aggregator be polling every 30 minutes? The
convention early on was no more than once an hour. But newer
aggregators either never heard of the convention or chose to ignore
it. Some aggregators let the users scan whenever they want. Please
don't do that. Once an hour is enough. Otherwise bandwidth bills won't
scale. Further, there are good ways to optimize this stuff, but that
would require cooperation among members of the community. And this
community is well-known for not cooperating with each other. We let a small
number of people fillibuster the mail lists, people who don't produce
software on either end of the RSS equation, and thereby progress
happens in very small steps if it ever happens at all.
Net-net, it's good that users are taking an interest in RSS.
But it's bad that they're behaving just as the geeks did, selfishly,
in a controlling way, fighting over things that were decided a long
time ago. Human nature comes along for the ride with us on our journey
to more effective communication tools. Can people see the big picture
and let good stuff like RSS rise to the top without pulling it down?
I've become a pessimist over the years, I think they can't help
themselves. So it's a miracle something new happened. Enjoy it while
you can.

I woke early with sugarplums dancing in my head ... Wait? I

Roogle metadata (# of queries, top ten queries, etc) in my head.
This is a great suggestion from Brent at Net News Wire and will be done

thinking I should download it and give it a try. Everyone seems
to love it.
What's new right is self service adding of your
own blog! Just go here and fill out
the form and you're in. Don't worry about whether or not you're
in there already -- each RSS url is validated to only exist ONCE in
the database and the blog url and RSS url are validated to actually
exist on the net as readable URLs before they are accepted.
Note: If you emailed me about being added, no need to fill out the
form again, I'll take care of it.

Eclipse RCP: The Early Days

I played with Eclipse 3.0's new RCP (Rich Client Platform) support
which allows you
to build client software using the same engine that drives Eclipse
3.0 IDE.
While one could have build a client using just SWT, RCP allows you
to reuse many of
the Eclipse plugins in your application.
In essence, RCP allows you to easily repackage Eclipse 3.0 IDE such
that it only has
the features you want presented in the way you want.
Dependencies between plugins
will complicate and bloat your RCP application, but I am expecting
many RCP-ready
plugins to be available soon so this is not a big problem.
The big problem, for now, is the lack of RCP tools and
documentations. Eclipse
3.0 has very little built-in tools to help you create RCP
applications.
For example, Export Plugins feature to export a test RCP app but it
didn't automatically
include the necessary plugins. So I had to write an Ant
script to do that.
But then my sighs of annoyance turned to urghs of disgust when
Eclipse deleted
the Ant file when I ran the Export Plugins again.
I had a lot of trouble running and debugging the RCP app
too. I followed
the instructions in the RCP tutorial exactly, but the startup code
kept complaining
that it couldn't find the application. Looks like I'll have
to dig into the
plugin startup code and understand it more throughly.
In conclusion, I think RCP is wonderful but it's still a bit
early. Wait a few
more months before diving in unless you can't afford to wait.
