New Scientist
reports on the graduate student at Carnegie Mellon University we've
linked to previously who built a robot that can make simple origami
constructions. The work is aimed at developing robotic systems that
can manipulate various materials encountered in daily life. From
researcher
Devin
Balkcom's site:
"Why origami? Origami is a fresh challenge for the
field of robotic manipulation. Paper is flexible; robots are
best at manipulating rigid things. Even if we model origami as
an articulated rigid body (by building our origami out of really stiff
cardboard with hinges along creases), it still has a complicated
mechanical structure." Link

Origami Folding Robot
Origami Folding Robot
12/15/2003 06:55 PMDevin Balkcom and Matt Mason, working at the
CMU Robotics Institute have
created the world's first origami folding robot. The
robot can fold a
variety of traditional origami shapes. While the shapes are simple,
the
interesting part is that the robot determines the sequences of moves
and
folds needed on its own. What have they learned from the exercise?
"For now, human hardware and software are superior:
human fingers are great tools for manipulating delicate paper, and
human intuition and intellect far outclass robotic planning
capabilities." Devin's website includes a Quicktime video of the
robot
in action.

Cameras, Privacy And The Law
02/17/2004 06:31 PMFound over at
Alan
Reiter's Camera Phone Report is this story written by a Kansas
City Star columnist talking about how
everyone's overreacting to the "dangers" of camera
phones by worrying about a specific technology, rather than the
misuse of that technology. The writer lists a bunch of other devices
(including watches and MP3 players) that include cameras, but which no
one is calling to ban. However, his overall point is that technology
trumps privacy - and on top of that, technology trumps the law. The
issue we should be focusing on, according to the article, is making
laws that protect privacy, not ones that outlaw technology. Then, if
someone is using the technology to violate someone's privacy, you go
after them for breaking the privacy law - not the law banning the,
otherwise useful, technology. Makes sense. Of course, if you then
combine it with another article (found at
Smart Mobs),
it raises other questions. This is a case where a man with a wireless
security camera system realized that he was
getting
video from a neighbor's security camera instead of his own - and
witnessed the neighbor abusing her foster children. He called the
police and the woman was quickly arrested, which is clearly a good
thing. However, where does the law stand on video like that, which is
accidentally intercepted? Is it only a privacy violation if the
voyeurism is intentional? Clearly, there are a lot of new legal and
privacy issues raised by new technologies - and trying to simply
outlaw technology or cram new technologies into old laws isn't going
to cut it.

Do Red Light Cameras Help?
Do Red Light Cameras Help?
01/05/2005 10:30 PMWe've had a number of stories about
problems
with speed cameras, but similar problems apply to red light
cameras as well. Of course, the biggest question is whether or not
these cameras help make the roads safer. The problem is that the
incentive of those installing the cameras is often to maximize
revenue. Thus, they choose locations that are high traffic -- but not
necessarily dangerous. In some cases, such as in San Diego, it turned
out that officials
reduced the length of the yellow light on
traffic lights where speed cameras were positioned, in order to create
more violations. While studies have shown that locations that have
red light cameras do reduce side impact accidents,
they increase rear impact accidents,
because people slam on the brakes to avoid getting caught by the
camera. The net effect, however, is in dispute. Some say that the
reduction in side impact crashes outweighs slower rear impact crashes
-- which may be true. Of course, if officials really want to stop
side impact crashes from people running red lights, it seems there's a
much simpler and more effective solution. Some locations do this, but
I've never understood why it's not more popular: have a period of time
when lights in both directions are red. That is, when the lights for
one roadway turns red, don't immediately turn the cross traffic lights
green. Give it a second, allowing the stragglers to get through, and
then let the other traffic go. Of course, if this were all about
safety that's what would happen -- and it's pretty clear that safety
is coming second to revenue in many of these cases.

UK Cameras To Count Your Passengers
07/28/2004 01:06 PMRemember all the
controversy over speed cameras that tended to make
spectacularly amusing mistakes? Well, that hasn't stopped the UK from
trying to move forward with special infrared cameras designed to do
even more advanced things, such as
counting
the number of passengers in your car to prevent cheaters from
using the carpool/HOV lanes. The researchers working on the
technology claim that it can distinguish between a human and other
non-human passenger items such as a mannequin or a large dog. Of
course, it's not as imaginative as the CarpoolCheats.org folks, who
went around snapping pictures of people cheating their way in the
carpool lane, but that site's been shut down by angry carpool
cheaters, unfortunately.

A bit of interesting chim
cham from one Mr. Brahe, of One
Internet Lane: Apparently, while futzing around with the new
Sidekick II in San Diego, he happened to pick up on an important
difference between the old model and the new: While user-submitted
programs for the first Sidekick had to be approved by T-Mobile
(something they were seemingly reticent to do, like, ever), Danger,
creator of the Sidekick (nee Hiptop) have wrested control of
user-submitted applications back, making one critical difference
between versions: the new model will likely have more of what people
really want: applications.
Of course, one Internet Semistar does not a source make, but if
we'll follow up with Danger and see what we can find out.

among other things pictures and user manuals have been revealed. It
looks similar to the unit we posted a few months ago, but it looks
like the camera on the back might include a flash, to which we say
with no shame at all, "Oh, snap!" (Okay, maybe a little shame). Go
ahead and dig around on the FCC site and see what you can find and
we'll do the same. Let's just hope and pray that camera is 1-megapixel
