06/24/2004 08:05 PMToday, I've met some new people. Including myself.
Oddly enough, it hasn't been all bad.
Perhaps I've learned to let
go. Perhaps someone else taught me to do it. Nevertheless, I feel
strangely at peace with myself. It's as if something had changed, in
a profound manner.
In a sense, I'm free now.
Just the way we are
I guess you've seen it now
A mirror of ourselves sure makes us weird

Moving Past GormanGate
Moving Past GormanGate
03/14/2005 06:22 PMIndulge me for a moment while I play catch-up and note that I, too,
have added the “Blog Person” button to the right-hand
column on my web site, right above the “RSS bigot” one. I
note this mainly because some folks have wondered where it should link
to, and I’ve chosen to point to a Technorati search for “michael gorman
bloggers.”
Lots of people sent me links to the
controversy while I was out sick (thanks!), and others have asked for
my opinion on the whole thing. I think you know where I stand, and I
don’t really have anything to add that is more complex or
eloquent than what has already been written. I don’t think
Gorman should resign, but I do worry that he has alienated a large
contingent of people who could have helped both him and ALA in
general. My biggest fear, though, is that he doesn’t even
realize this (kind of like another president we all know), which
doesn’t bode well for the coming year.
However, I’m
not writing this to re-hash the debate. Instead, I think it’s
time to move past GormanGate and look to the future, let bygones be
bygones, and maybe even make a little money. You see, I think
we’ll probably see many more Gorman editorials as he becomes the
official President of ALA. Therefore, I think we should kill two birds
with one stone and start a pool to guess what his next topic will be.
This will allow us to prepare for the worst, while also providing
financial gain for the correct prognosticators.
Of course, this
won’t be easy, as there are so many different possibilities.
I’m having a difficult time choosing just one:
- No
serious conversation has ever occurred over instant messaging.
Academic thoughts written as text should be read sequentially,
providing a reflection period for each and every sentence in order to
understand its full significance.
- No serious music has ever
been listened to as an MP3. I doubt that these digital music
downloaders have ever listened to an entire album in order, let alone
a symphony. Don’t even get me started on MP3 audiobooks,
girlfriend!
- No serious information has ever been transmitted
over a cell phone conversation. To be properly savored, like fine
wine, conversation must take place sequentially and in person.
Otherwise, meaning and context will be completely lost to the
listener, thereby reducing the effectiveness of the information being
conveyed. Even the act of ordering a
pizza requires close human interaction in order to
demonstrate the urgency and complex nuances necessary to
obtaining the best possible convergence of toppings and
crust.
Add your best guess and place your bets!

The future and past of journalism
The future and past of journalism
06/05/2005 11:34 PMScott Rosenberg has written a very nice essay on the future of
journalism in the age when anyone can publish. He has caught the
moment that we stand in well, with the old media monopolies dying but
not dead, and the new media struggling to be born, but not clear what
it will be born as. He captures well a phenomenon that experienced in
my teens and will never forget, the experience of having someone
report on something you know well, and discovering how flawed and
human supposedly authoritative institutions like major newspapers are.
In my case, I was living in Niger in West Africa, and I once met the
Washington Post journalist who was responsible for covering the entire
continent of Africa (which is by itself an amazing fact). He spent 5
days in the country and then left, not to return again for a year or
so, and on the basis of those 5 days wrote 5 or so articles on events
and trends in Niger, each of which contained things stated as facts
that I thought were patently false. It was a good learning experience
for a future political activist. I suspect that, in spite of the many
reasons why the existing institutions and practicioners of journalism
should be able to see the writing on the wall, we are entering another
period of Schumpeterian Creative Destruction. I also suspect that what
arises from the ashes that we will recognize as journalism will arise
from the mix of new sources like blogs, group blogs, indymedia, PLOS,
Kuroshin, etc. not from the transformation of existing
institutions....
Condemned To Repeat The Past?
Condemned To Repeat The Past?
04/13/2005 06:17 AMLast week, I mentioned one of the
lessons
learned from Andy Kessler's newest book,
How We Got Here: A Slightly Irreverent History of Technology and
Markets. I've just finished reading it, and just in time, as
well, since you can now check it out for free. While the hard copy
version doesn't come out until June, Kessler is releasing the book for
free download off his
site in e-book form. If you read his previous book,
Running Money, you might even recognize a few short
passages in the new book. In
Running Money, Kessler goes
through his own experience figuring out the mental model that guided
his investment philosophy in technology -- and part of that included a
brief history lesson in the start of the industrial revolution. HWGH
is basically an extended version of that history lesson, written in
the same light tone -- designed to be the basic, quick history manual
that anyone in the tech world (in just about any capacity, from
engineer to business to investing) should read. Indeed, we're already
seeing startups and companies making business decisions that seem like
they're following the same bad footsteps companies took only five
years ago. Is it any surprise that some are repeating the mistakes of
200 years ago as well? One of the worst things in the tech and
business world these days is that many people can't view trends out
past a quarter (or they simply extract one single trend, without
recognizing how others impact them). Any intelligent business person
needs to recognize how trends play out in the long term, and how they
interact with each other. HWGH gives you plenty of trends from the
past few
centuries to help guide you into that longer term
thinking.
